MasterG2kTR -> SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/9/2011 8:10:14 AM)

This is a survey to see how wide spread this scam is. The scam in question is the meat in your local Grocer/Supermarket meat coolers.

How much of the beef being offered is labeled as Black Angus?

A couple years ago it was less than 10%. Last week I took note that ALL the beef in the cases was labeled as Black Angus. Now correct me if I am wrong, but if you are going to label it Black Angus, doesn't it have to come from Black Angus cows? Are the slaughter houses only taking in Black Angus these days?

Are any of you getting tired of this scam? The grocers mark up the Black Angus $2-$3 per pound when most of the meat is not Black Angus. I asked a butcher about it. His response was that it has to do with the color and marbling of the meat, and not the cow it comes from. To this I say BULLSHIT!!  (no pun intended)

BTW - If you're a vegan or vegetarian keep it to yourself....this is only for the carnivores!

mnottertail -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/9/2011 8:17:56 AM)

Yeah, nothing special about black angus other than their build and they can lay on the fat.
There is no use in buying the premium meats.

Black Angus is a category like baron of beef:

In Britain, a baron is a large, important section of beef containing both sirloins.

In the US, a baron of beef is an imprecise term used to describe large, less important cuts that are best-suited to roasting or braising, such as the steamship round, top (or inside) round, or bottom (or outside) round.

So essentially meaningless a marketing ploy, like putting new and improved on comet cleanser.

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/9/2011 8:19:46 AM)

"Certified Angus Beef" (CAB) is a special industry designation developed in 1978 that involves standards for marbling, tenderness, age, and color. According to the National Cattleman's Beef Association, only about 8% of U.S. beef is entitled to the label "Certified Angus." Just because something is labeled "Angus" or "Black Angus" doesn't mean it's the same quality as "Certified Angus Beef." Angus beef is further differentiated by USDA grades such as "prime," "choice," and "select," giving us such labels as "Certified Angus Prime," indicating the best Certified Angus Beef.

Angus are about the most common beef cattle these days.

Certified Angus Beef is not only angus but graded out in the top few percent.

They did such a good job of marketing that people associated Angus with CAB.

ETA heather types faster than I do.

MusicalBoredom -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/9/2011 8:36:15 AM)

I'm pretty sure that the Angus beef at Burger King is truthfully labeled.  That is, there was this family that had this pet cow named "Angus."  It ultimately died of old age and was sold to Burger King.

Termyn8or -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/9/2011 3:56:22 PM)

It's just one of those things. I was just talking with someone the other day about something that was only related to this topic because it was one of the many things that are not what they say they are.

This is allowed by the best government money can buy. Next, be on the lookout for Kosher pork. This is no worse than any of the other labelling requirements though, think about this one

CHEESE Proceessed food product, contains less than 10% edible material.

Shall we talk about fruit "juices" ? And someone mentioned new and imprroved Comet cleanser- they really did improve it, because it used to work better. But see when it takes more to do the job they sell more. This is considered success.

I'm going to start going out to Amish country to buy food. The problem is that many of them escaped from behind the Buckeye curtain about ten years ago or so.

T^T

I work at a Farmers' Market in Denver.  Booth next to me is Callicrate Meats.  They raise, slaughter and butcher all in the same location.  They use Wagyu breed.  I think I heard him say "Kobe beef is only half  Wagyu."

Answer to avoid scams:  buy direct from the farmer!

MusicalBoredom -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/9/2011 7:12:21 PM)

I am with you on that -- buy from the farmer.  I'm lucky to have such a flourishing green market (the city's name for farmers market) around me.

I am with you. I live in a small town in a small county that is almost all farms. Our local store only buys local free range beef. The handle it themselves. No prepackaging, it is cut to order or doled out fresh from the case. No labels, no fancy names, but damn it is great.

I've noticed the price difference to, I get extra lean here in town, ground fresh every morning for 2.19 a lb. The crappy stuff from Walmart is 3.99 a lb.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/9/2011 10:49:42 PM)

The food industry is nothing but a scam. They scam the growers, they scam the retailers and they scam the consumer. Buy local, and grow all you can, instead.

pahunkboy -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/10/2011 6:53:51 AM)

This is a good time to start a diet.

LaTigresse -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/10/2011 10:55:20 AM)

I've written about this before. I live in Iowa....farm country.

One of my clients, where I work, is on the Johnson Co. Beef Producers board (as well as the Pork Producers). He and I talked about this very subject not that long ago. When he takes steers in for butcher, there is no exchange of certification, no proof of blood line. If they are black (and all Angus are not black...) they can be considered as, and marketed as, Angus. Regardless of genetics. All it takes is for them to be primarily black.

Most beef cattle are not purebred anything. They are a mixture of several breeds. Some of those breeds are better for market beef, others are better in temperament. And yet others are better 'keepers'. Certainly most farmers prefer a steer that matures to market weight more quickly so that is a big factor also. Most beef cattle are mutts.

If you pass a farm that is raising purebred cattle, it is likely being raised for breeding stock.

I am rather partial to Herfords myself, and hate Charolais.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/10/2011 11:04:58 AM)

I like meat. If it looks good to me, and the price is right, I will buy it. Angus? Meh.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: SURVEY: Supermarket Scam (8/10/2011 11:12:49 AM)

I lived in WA State when Stuart Anderson opened his first Black Angus restaurant. His ranch was out East of the mountains & bordered the main highway, now interstate, running East/West. For a long time there was a small herd of Black Angus who grazed in that pasture.

I have no idea what the difference is in different meats. I'm like Hibbie, if it looks good I buy it & eat it. And I don't eat very much meat anyway.

But Stu Anderson was a really nice guy. [:D]

This.

If you go to the livestock auctions, the black cattle sell much higher than the other colors.

I do not worry too much about what type of cow my meat came from. I do not eat beef unless it is well done. I do not eat steaks (other than chicken fried steaks). So any beef is going to be seasoned, so there is no reason to buy the really expensive stuff.

I will eat lamb chops medium. But unless you go to a farmer, the lamb in the stores is all from New Zealand and Australia. Which is insane because there are friggin sheep all over the place here in Kansas.
