VaguelyCurious -> RICE! (8/9/2011 4:42:36 PM)

Ok, so I've remembered that this is the internet, and that randomers on the internet are not for political debate, but for fun and laughter and smiles.

So with that in mind:

Every time I notice sunshinemiss' signature...

'¿me preguntas por que compro arroz y flores? compro arroz para vivir y flores para tener algo por lo que vivir.'
(Roughly: 'You ask me why I buy rice and flowers? I buy rice in order to live, and flowers in order to have something to live for.')

...it jars with me. I always think 'Confucius! Dude! Why aren't you living for the rice?'

When I make rice I use basmati. Simmer it in loads of water 'til it's just got a tiny bit of bite left, then drain and steam in the microwave for five minutes (or if I'm cooking for an army, coat the pan with a film of oil, chuck the rice back in, put a towel under the lid and leave on low for twenty minutes.)

If I'm being a no good, bad, terribly unhealthy person I will fry onions in a good whack of oil with lots of black pepper (the basis of all Iraqi cooking) and stir them through at the last minute.

It's fragrant and filling and delicious - what's not to love?

Is your rice something to live for? What's your cooking technique? Your favourite rice dish?

...or would you rather just live for some dying petals in a jar of water? [8D]

I don't cook my rice, I like it bullet hard then I glue it together and use it to smash windows of rice shops. Then I steal more rice and the cycle continues. As the collar turns so does the conversation, round and round going nowhere

VaguelyCurious -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 4:49:56 PM)

Seriously, enough with the rioting. Happy rice time now, please.

hardcybermaster -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 4:52:40 PM)

no we have to have pointless circular arguements!
OK that seems like a lot of trouble for rice. Surely(usually) rice is just a filler and it's what goes with it that's important

VaguelyCurious -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 4:54:19 PM)

Nonono that's exactly what I'm saying! If you treat rice like the filler then you're missing out on something magical.

Good rice cooked well with a bit of seasoning and a little oil is glorious, glorious food.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 4:56:49 PM)

i love basmati rice; the texture and taste/smell of it is just perfect. i like regular rice, too. i like fried rice, rice with beans, chana masala with rice (probably my favorite food ever =p) rice with butter and sugar for breakfast.
rice is nice!

LadyConstanze -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 4:57:52 PM)

Never saw rice as a filler, I like to cook mine with saffron, I absolutely HATE rice being fried, I usually throw tons of shrooms and veg in, lots of seasoning and herbs or my "I need comfort food" recipe, rice and tomato sauce and lots of chilli

hardcybermaster -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 4:57:55 PM)

I do cook rice based dishes like nasi goreng(spelling?) but it's the meat or fish that goes with it that is the star turn. Maybe it's time that is the issue, it takes long enough to cook a decent curry without spending loads of time on the rice too

Lucylastic -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 4:58:30 PM)

Rice is the major component in my comfort food, garlic, pepper, slap of sage, then 3 cheeses into a roux sauce, some meatballs add dash of milk to make it creamier.yum. Oh a bed of fluffy rice *add your fave here*
Hubby asked for seconds last night, and he doesnt usually like much rice in his diet:)

VaguelyCurious -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 4:58:58 PM)

Rice with butter and sugar?!

This is not a concept I have come across before.

I am not usually a breakfast person, but I think some experimenting may be in order!

(Literally just rice with butter and sugar? Or is that a shorthand for a more complicated recipe?)

hardcybermaster -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 4:59:29 PM)

cheesey meatball rice,interesting...

You've reminded me - my old flatmate used to put turmeric in his rice if he was making curry (we couldn't afford saffron. [8D])

Gradually he turned every single wooden spoon in the flat neon yellow...

Never had rice pudding?? nah must be missing something here, thats how I eat rice pudding, rice, milk, cream or butter and sugar, ooh I miss my grans rice pudding, ambrosia sheer ambrosia

hardcybermaster -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 5:05:06 PM)

I am not allowed to have turmeric in the house now due to its ability to turn everything yellow, so I use a bit of paprika instead to avoid the baby poo colour

I think of rice pudding as something really wet - lots of milk/cream. You couldn't get it to that consistency with just butter and sugar.

I think I've been preconditioned against rice pudding by my mother's aversion to hot milk (a whole nother story) but I would totally eat rice with just butter and sugar!

NuevaVida -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 5:06:44 PM)

I love rice.  White rice, basmati, jasmine, brown, wild rice - - rice is wonderful.

I make spanish rice with saffron and wine.

I make risotto - with prawns or chicken or (and) asparagus, mushroom, red bell peppers....

I put leftover rice in home made soup

Or I toss leftover rice in a wok with peanut and/or sesame oil, soy sauce, veggies, etc, for a stir fry.

Curry rice is yummy.

All rice is yummy.  [:D]

LOL ok thats funny:)
Im a bugger with it, damn stuff tastes great but my men are sometimes sloppy and I hate trying to get out the stains so I had to limit it somewhat.

hardcybermaster -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 5:08:29 PM)

this is so much more fun than riots

Arpig -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 5:08:58 PM)

In japan, they used to serve you a bowl of steamingly hot rice, and you'd break a raw egg into it and mix it. The heat of the rice would half cook the egg. It tastes a lot better than it sounds.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: RICE! (8/9/2011 5:09:19 PM)

ohhh i agree, Nueva; wild and brown rice are so very tasty -- jasmine too!
i love saffron rice

ricetacular!
