I have been reading a number of articles about macroeconomics recently. Many, although far from all, of the writers I have read believe that China's one child policy has been a driver of their economic success. In practice, it certainly seems to have worked, the standard of living is going up, unlike the rest of the world. I know many people have moral objections to it, including many senators who decry the practice as a human rights violation, but then vote to accept Chinese loans. Certainly the aborting of female fetuses is abominable, but if that practice was stopped, is the one child policy immoral? I have my own opinions on the topic, but honestly, it is not a topic you can just casually bring up among friends. But I have often wondered how other people feel about this issue. So, does anyone here believe the one child policy has led to China's economic success? And is it immoral?

I think we should have a one child policy here. I don't know about aborting but I think instead of tax credits there should be extra charges. After all that's more people burdening the infrastructure. It worked when we needed more people but it doesn't work now that we don't. Immigration should also be stopped DEAD. Giving up the US - American ideal ? All for it, do you see things as ideal ? Let's you and me take a ride through town here. Have a real close look at people. Not on fucking TV. Look at the ones who are actually too nuts to get on Jerry Springer. Then you can make an informed judgement. I think China did the right thing, but maybe not the abortion. I think there should be a charge for everything you use up in society by exercising your right to have kids. Hey, you have a right to travel but that doesn't mean that tax money must buy gasoline for your car. In fact it seems to do quite the opposite. T^T

I may have misspoken. I don't believe there is an government involvement in sex selection abortions. I understand abortion is legal, and some parents choose to abort their femal fetuses.

I don't know if it has led or just contributed to their economic success, but I did read an article some years ago about a journalist visiting China, who found a baby girl lying at the side of the road, so he rushed her to the hospital. Heading back, he saw another one. The one child policy has families wanting boys, to carry their name. Girls are not wanted, so, when born, discarded and basically left to die. I don't know if things have changed much since I read the article, but I found it totally inhumane. I also read that the US helps to fund their abortion/birth control efforts - what the heck is up with that? On a different note, I think once you start creating homogenized one-child families, you lose out on the variation of human perspective that comes from families large and small. From what I understand of the situation, I can't support it. Surely there must be better ways at achieving economic success, yes?

And what happens after the first child is born? Forced sterilization? Forced abortions?

I don't know if there are other ways they could have achieved their economic success. No one else seems to be succeeding these days. The reason they want boys is because traditionally Chinese parents were taken care of by their kids when they were old. Girls get married, and go live with their husband's family; boys stay around, get married, and then the son and his wife care for the elderly parents. So boys are considered more valuable. I must admit, I don't know China's official stance on abortion, it may actually not be legal, just ignored. And obviously not all female fetuses are aborted, a lot of girls are released to other countries for adoption. That is why there are so many adopted Chinese girls in the US.
