Slaveforlife789 -> Strip Bars (8/11/2011 7:26:00 PM)

I used to go to Strip Bars now and then, mainly with friends, for some “fun”. I used to enjoy going with my lesbian/bisexual friends as well. I only had a lab dance once. Anyways, I no longer enjoy visiting these places- it is dirty men after women who are selling sex; something I do not want to buy.

A friend shared the following research article with me http://www.drjudithreisman.com/archives/2011/02/stripclubs_acco.html and the conclusion is quoted. Scientifically, the paper has some merit but I have some reservations on some parts of the methodology section

“Men associated with stripclubs use force and coercion to establish sexual contact with women in stripping, proposition women for prostitution, intentionally inflict bodily harm upon the women, and expose themselves to the women. These actions are prohibited by law, yet when these crimes are committed against women in stripclubs, the general attitude that strippers deserve what they get prevails. Women's complaints of abuse are met with contempt and are dismissed by owners, managers, and staff. Women are customarily told to ignore abuse and have been rebuffed with "Go bend over and do your job" and "You have to expect a certain amount of that." In the case of women in stripping, enduring sexual violence is part of her job description. Women in stripping are expected to endure these abuses, degradations, and humiliations with a smile and a "Thank You".
The degree of sexual violence perpetrated against strippers explodes the myths about stripping as harmless entertainment. The verbal harassment, physical and sexual abuse, and financial exploitation women suffer in stripclubs is unparalleled in any other legitimate workplace. Women in stripping are subject to actions that would be perceived as assaultive or a least unwanted in any other context or were directed against other women. Stripclubs allow men to use and abuse women in a manner that is not tolerated in any other business.
The organization and conditions of stripclubs not only produce and reproduce gender inequality, but facilitate and normalize men's violence against women. Sexual violence has been normalized, institutionalized, and legalized in the stripclub industry as socially sanctioned male behavior. Stripclubs and the men associated with stripclubs have turned acts of violence into entertainment and tied male sexual pleasure to victimizing and exploiting. Stripclubs are structured according to male domination and control, and are inherently violent. It is impossible to set up stripclubs without sexual violence and that is reason to challenge the legitimacy of stripclubs.”

I am wondering what people think. As said, I do not enjoy strip bars anymore BUT I am not saying that they should be prohibited either.

Your thoughts!

I think that what you've written is an over generalization of SOME facilities. Based upon what I know of the places closest to here, what you've written does not apply.

I do not have first hand experience as I do not go to them......no reason to. But I have known women that work at them and know many people that do go to them regularly.

Aynne88 -> RE: Strip Bars (8/11/2011 8:04:31 PM)

love 'em, they are fun. My stripper friends make a ton of money and would laugh at the notion that they are the victims, they make fun of their male clientele all  the time.  It's not like that.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Strip Bars (8/11/2011 8:09:32 PM)

the one time i went to a strip club, there was one dancer who i couldn't watch because she OBVIOUSLY didn't want to be there. but the others were really friendly and engaging, and they had no problems shutting down people who were going overboard. the vibe from them was totally different, and they'd "interact" with female audience members, but not male ones.
i think SOME places exploit women, just like some people recycle and some people are allergic to peanuts.
i don't think all places are the same, though.

tj444 -> RE: Strip Bars (8/11/2011 8:26:06 PM)

not sure about the survey, they only surveyed 18 women which imo is a very small number for a survey, and if they all worked at just at one club then that to me doesnt represent the entire industry. It was also done like 13 years ago so it could be different now.

I have not been in a strip club since my mid-20s so i have no idea what its like now or how the women feel or are treated...

Nice, if you read the body of the study in the link provided, It has the same idea- they look down at the male clientele. This was the conclusion section, the paper has more information in the body.

here is a newer study;u can only access the abstract though http://www.jstor.org/pss/10.1086/588501
Search Google Scholar and the outcome may not be favorable for strip bars

LanceHughes -> RE: Strip Bars (8/11/2011 9:13:09 PM)

And what about the MALE strip clubs?  And the female patrons versus the male patrons????

And then we have drag bars to consider....

WAIT!  How about telephone sex workers.... and all the configurations therof.  And, and, porno...... let's see, three ways of mixed gender (and single gender).... and, and,.....

Sorry, have to go take care of a personal matter that "just came up." LOL!

Maybe you just need to get laid.

Or at least go to a strip club and go home and jerk off.

DesFIP -> RE: Strip Bars (8/12/2011 6:31:50 AM)

Traditionally strip clubs were mob owned, and as the mob also ran prostitution rings, of course they weren't going to protect the women. In an independently owned club, especially if owned by some of the dancers, this wouldn't be the norm. It's the preponderance of criminal owners that causes the problems.

I'm pretty sure there are strip clubs where the girls aren't treated well, I've gone to the odd strip club with friends and from what I could tell, they were very legitimate businesses, paid tax, it was actually discouraged that the male staff dated any of the performers, same thing with the customers, you can look but not touch. A friend of mine has a martial arts school and used to work at a strip club as an additional income, he said pretty often the women are dismissed for trying to get more "personal" with customers than is allowed. The owners want to keep everything above board and legal, quite easy to lose the license for one. I think you might be thinking of strip clubs a few decades in the past or in places where LE tends to turn a blind eye.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Strip Bars (8/12/2011 7:15:30 AM)

i disagree with the op's assessment. i have never seen more people get the fuck slapped out of them and bounced to the curb than i have at strip clubs. i don't know about the states, but they have bouncers in strip clubs up here, and those fuckers don't put up with shit. one sign from a girl that some horny twat is out of line and he's on the sidewalk wiping the blood from his face.

now the staff - well that's a different story. they can be a real fucking issue. "you want a different shift? suck this and we'll see what i can do."

yea, sorry. badly worded on my part.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Strip Bars (8/12/2011 8:22:16 AM)

My dream business is to open a strip club where the dancers are treated really really well. Health insurance, 401ks, and mandatory retirement at 25. And absolutely huge, gay bouncers. My CPA and I are scouting locations. It doesn't have to be a exploitive business.
