Do you vote? If not, why not? Would you consider spoiling a ballot to be an expression of protest or more like a waste of time?

It will be interesting to see the responses. And while I know this particular forum tends to deviate from the initial topic, digressing into personal jabs at one's particular political viewpoint, I will still make the request of respondents to try to avoid this. ;)

If you don't vote, you abdicate your right to complain about the results.

Spoiling a ballot?  I'm not sure what you mean by that.  I've written in candidates, and marked for protest candidates in the past, but I don't consider any of those to be spoiling.

To clarify what I understand spoiling to mean...essentially ruining it, say marking off all candidates or making it a non-countable. Of course this can only apply to paper ballots. I wonder if there is a way to ruin a computerized ballot. (I've never voted in that manner.) You do bring up another avenue though...that of writing in a candidate. So I would add that to the question too.

To me it would be a waste of time. It just seems so pointless.

Sorry, I thought it was on topic as it was asking if people vote!

As an election judge of 20+ years, I can answer your "spoiled ballot" question.  The entire ballot is not counted.  To put a fine point on it: Spoiling a ballot is equivalent to not voting.  Thus, your original question about not voting doesn't need expansion into spoiling a ballot.... and nobody cares, you're not going to be reported, no tally is even kept of spoiled ballots.

Along those lines, pooping on your income tax form has no effect on the IRS.  Mail openers have gloves and if such a form comes in (and they do) the form is "cleaned" as best it can and it is then laminated in plastic and is proccesed just like any other form.  All you've done is pissed off - well, sort of - the IRS worker that has to deal with your crap - ahhh, now we've got the right pun!

Are you reported? Nope.  All you've actually done is raise the cost of processing forms.  Guess who pays that increase in cost.

ETA:  In the (estimated) 25 elections in all those 20+ years, I never missed being a judge and never missed voting.  <primaries, local elections - our city elections are in odd-numbered years, various special taxing ballots, what have you>

Holy wow. I guess I'm naive! I had no idea people did such childish things to their tax forms!!

It's too bad on the spoiling ballot thing not being counted. I have wondered if an election were held and a fairly sizable percentage of the "voters" opted to spoil their ballots, if that would gain anyone's attention.

You just don't fucking know. With these controlled elections here I am done with this shit, and after a bit of convo with dude from Norway and some more research, I think I would like to vote over to there. I think I can deal with the fact that their govenment is religion based, but I am in doubt as to if I can bring anything meaningful there. I don't care about all these dregs you all haul around the fucking world, I DON'T WANT TO BE ALLOWED, I WANT TO BE WANTED. I will not be a refugee.

I really don't know if I have enough to offer. That is the only thing stopping me now.

Oh, it doesn't have to be in America. :) I live and work in the USA, but I'm not a citizen, so I cannot vote. If it weren't for the repercussions, I've considered trying to register to vote, just to see what happens. I hear Arizona is (or at least used to be) fairly lax in this area and apparently non-citizens voted. I don't recall where I read it though, so take it for what it's worth.

Interestingly enough, I've been summoned for jury duty here twice. :D

No, I do not vote.

I stopped voting in my mid-20s, the main reason at that time due to privacy issues since voters lists were public info. That has changed since with the new Privacy Acts so now that info is private.

Over the years I started thinking about leaving Canada so I decided that I would not vote again. Imo, since i can vote with my feet (meaning leave the country), I dont feel it is up to me to impose my political viewpoint on others there by voting, I leave it to them to decide their own destiny.. I do have my opinions tho..

I did leave but it wasnt for political or tax reasons, I left for personal reasons, so I did vote with my feet as it were. I dont think a person can leave their homeland for just one reason (unless fleeing war or persecution), its usually a combination of reasons.

Eta- even leaving/voting with ones feet, I could still vote if I chose to no matter where I live. But again, I dont feel its up to me to make those decisions.

OK, pick someone for me for whom to vote. Do it. COME ON. I HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS SHIT FOR FORTY YEARS, you can't even whisper in your loudest voice. YOU TELL ME, WHO SHOULD I VOTE FOR !

Come on, I ain't got all night. Last time who should I have voted for ? The Black democrat, and I can't stand democrats or the other guy who says we might be at war for another hundred fucking years ? Fukum both. And......

FUCK YOU. There is noone for whom to vote anymore.

Now, sheeple, figure out who REALLY picks these candidates. Come on motherfuckers, even my worst enemies on here, at least half of them would rather have me in the big chair than anyone else, if they got a fucking brain.

You can be President ? Git yer ass up there. It's a fucking bunch of shit and really, NOT voting is now a choice. And tell me how the fuck you write in a candidate on an electronic voting machine.

You saw it happen, so did I, but I happened to notice.

Vote for fucking WHAT ?

Only in relationships and employment.  When it comes to my country, I'll vote with my voice and ultimately, every bullet I can scrounge, first.
