True, but groups vary as to whether they will accept guests from out of town, depending if they are a member of their group locally or not. If a person can provide references, it might help in trying to get an invite to a private function. I'm not from NYC, but Paddles is the only public club that I'm aware of. I'm trying to remember if they require an orientation to attend or not.

Paddles doesn't but there are also a lot of parties that are open, entrance fee and that's it, been to a few, the demos usually require purchasing tickets in advance. NYC is a lot more informal about that kinda stuff, almost every weekend there is some sort of fetish party, black clothes usually do, if you wear fetish wear it's often a reduced entrance.

Welcome yad, would'nt it be great if some local could help you out? I would always research, before going anywhere, as that little help you so badly need, probably just won't be forthcoming!
