There is a prevalent assumption that Obama will face no serious opposition and will be the Dems' 2012 nominee.

Will that be true for you?

There's a lot about the guy that I don't like, including his continuation of disastrous Bush policies.  But I'll vote for him in the primary.

Edited to clarify that this question refers to the primary and not the general.

It depends on who he is running against.

I'm not 'collared' by either party as a lot here seem to be.

To vote in the PRIMARY election, you MUST be a registered (i.e. "collared") member of the that party.

So, DS's question is REALLY: Will there be ANY oppostion to Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primary?  (And the hidden version: Anybody think Hillary Clinton will oppose Obama in the up-coming Democratic primary?)

Lance's answer: Hell no - Obama bought her off with 8 years as Secretary of State.  She WILL be Democratic nominee in 2016 whether Obama wins or loses in 2012.

I don't think Hillary will run.  I do not seeing anyone taking him on in a Primary, I wish someone would.

Now if Sanders was to run on the Independent ticket,  I could see myself voting for him

Obama will face no serious opposition in the primaries. It is way too late in the process for anyone to get a real campaign up and running.

That's the crux.  Any vote against Obama will be a protest vote, nothing else.

Don't dismiss protest votes. That was how two of the last three British prime ministers took power...

If the Republicans seemed like they were going to put up a fairly moderate candidate against Obama, you could see a candidate like Nader taking liberal votes from voters who felt like there was no difference between the candidates.  This still could happen if the Republicans let Romney tack to the left and yet still deliver him the nomination.  Instead, it looks like even the more moderate candidates will have to tack hard to the right to survive the nomination process, so the voters on the left, even if they feel abandoned by all of Obama's caving in to the Republicans, will vote for him anyways, not so much to vote for Obama, but to vote against the Republican nominee.

Correct. However, my question related to the primary, not the general.

You may be wrong.  When did Johnson give up his bid for the election of 1968?  I think he did it closer to the election than where we are at now.

Nope.  It was March 31, 1968 per Wikipedia, during the primaries.  It was after he had barely squeaked by Eugene McCarthy, and then Bobby Kennedy entered the race.  So he had two credible challengers and was losing support fast.

Wrong on the time frame, but correct on legitimate challengers then vs. now.

It's possible, very remotely, that there could be a legitimate challenger by next March or April, but who would venture to say who that might be.

Not that I'm happy about it, but both parties are so completely suck-ass that we've got another four years of sorta-kinda president AND congress.

Oh joy.

That was a quite different primary system and a quite different political atmosphere. OFA is the largest campaign organization ever created. Obama has a huge war chest already. All the major campaign operatives are working for Obama. In order for a challenger to seriously threaten the President they would need to be building a campaign organization already. They would need to be fund raising already. No one is doing that therefore there is no way anyone is going to mount a real chllenge to the President in the primaries.

Oh you are right....you couldn't be more right.  And don't think that the movie about getting Usama and its release just a couple of months before the election is not designed to bump up his coffers even more.  But don't you find that.....wrong?  And don't think that the fed announcing that they will be holding interests rate down through the election cycle isn't designed to benefit his election as well.  But don't you find that wrong also?

What is even more ominous is what the Fed didn't say.  And that is that no matter who gets elected in 2012, you can bet on double digit interest rates during that next administration.  Ok...maybe not double digit...that is my bet.  But if the prime rate shoots up to 9.9%, what are your credit card rates going to look like?  How much will we have to borrow to make just the interest payments on the debt?  What will car loan interest rates look like?

Again, we're speaking of the PRIMARY election.

The two big-boy parties decide their candidate the PRIMARY election of each.
NO coalitions to "form the Government."

Again, the question is "Will Obama be elected the Democratic candidate for the Presidential (aka General) Election with any opposition?"

HELL, NO!  We'll see a repeat of Reagan's 2nd nomination.  All balloons and speeches and an unanimous vote - arranged by states so that Hawaii "pushes him over the top."

If you remember, Hillary had some state delegates going into the last National Convention.

NOT this time.  As a matter of fact, there will NOT be primary elections (state-by-state) for Democratic Presidential Candiacy since the State Conventions will (after more condoms, er.... balloons) will make their Delegations unaniamous.

Name-a-name other than Hillary, and you will be laughed out of the room.

Here's the thinking of the Independent in General election : Lordy!  I sure wish there was somebody I wanted to vote for.  Well, at least AFAIK, Obama is decent on social issues - he did away with "DADT." Don't Ask Don't Tell.  The Republican candidate is way far right on social stuff for me.  Obama seems to be about as bad on finances..... Oh hell, at least we're pretty sure Obama is trying... maybe I'll split my ticket.... yeah, Obama, and then give him... let's see my Republican Senator is.... yeah, he's okay.  At least he hasn't been in a scandal - this week. LOL!  (Or that ^&$ bastard got himself caught and the Reps. in the state put up somebody pretty clean by comparison.)

Yep. Dem. pres, and give him a Rep. Congress so that he can't get too far.

PLBBT! And that's the truth.

I find any reminder of the fact that OBL was killed at the orders of President Obama close to the election to be right and proper. Remember 2004 and the fear mongering by the GOP? Paybacks a bitch.

The fed has pursued a policy of keeping interest rates low for the last 20+ years. Trying to make that into some pro Obama conspiracy is utterly absurd.
