NuevaVida -> Rush Hour (8/15/2011 8:40:29 AM)

How long is your commute to work?

Do you drive? Carpool? Take public transportation?

What do you do to pass the time? Listen to music? Talk radio? Books on CD? Contemplate your next post on CM? Think about work?

If you drive, do you speed? Do other commuters frustrate you?

Do you have a rush hour commute or do you work different hours?

My typical commute is about 20 minutes unless I'm commuting to/from the Mister's. I listen to music, contemplate things on my mind, talk on the phone, drive about 10mph over the speed limit and rarely get frustrated.

What's your commute like?

AudaciousLaura -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 8:47:52 AM)

It takes me anywhere from 15- 30 minutes to get to school and work... if traffic isn't bad. I do drive, although I do take buses around my college. I usually listen to the radio, maybe a cd, sometimes my iPod. I do tend to speed... I try to make an effort not to. Other commuters do frustrate me... well some of them... the ones that do stupid stuff. I try to afford rush hour and I mostly can, but Mondays I can't because my puppy has puppy class at 6. I'll be happy when she gets to move on to the 7 class and I can avoid the traffic. My commute is usually along the interstate, it's not too bad. I usally enjoy driving.

3 blocks. That's one reason I bought this building.

littlewonder -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 9:11:06 AM)

Not currently working but my last job took me 20 minutes to get to work on the local bus and I would always listen to my ipod on the way and nap.

Now that I'll be going back to school it takes me again 20 minutes...seems to be the magical number for me lol....on the local bus here. Same thing, Ipod and nap.

NuevaVida -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 9:17:56 AM)

I have found 20 min to be totally doable and probably why I don't get very frustrated. When I worked an hour away from home it was a different story. When it rained it was a 90 min drive home and when it rained on a Friday afternoon, 2 hours. I'd be about one straw shy of road rage then.

I do work from home one day a week so my commute is about 8 steps then. [:D]

William that's awesome. Great planning!

My drive is about 50 miles. How long it takes depends on the day and weather. Usually about 40-45 minutes. In the winter it has, on occasion, taken up to 3 hours.

The regular drive I usually just keep company with my thoughts and enjoy the scenery. No music or radio. Most of my drive is quite beautiful year round. I see a lot of wild life and am very watchful to avoid colliding with them. Half of my drive is on state and county, two lane highways through farm country and the second half is on a 4 lane divided highway/interstate type thing......through farm country. Only the last few minutes are actually in town.

We have no public transportation available for my drive. I used to carpool with Generic Dude but he changed careers last winter so it's just me. I am open to closer job opportunities but they will be rare.

I usually go about 5-10 miles over the speed limit and use cruise control. Other drivers barely register on my radar. They are obstacles to avoid and that's about it.

I work 8-5 Monday through Friday. I try to leave home around 7ish give or take 15 minutes if I need gas or want to drop off recycling. I leave the shop around 5 and usually stop in a small town about 10 miles from home to work out before getting home.

My 20 year old daughter currently has a commute of 5 minutes to her job and from her former college. This fall her and her boyfriend are moving and it will take her 45 minutes to get to work and she's transferring college so again another 45 min commute. She's freaking out and not happy about it at all. She hates to drive to begin with so I think it stresses her out to have to drive that distance everyday. I wish I could find a way to make it easier on her so she doesn't end up with a mental meltdown.

LaT your commute sounds lovely. Years ago I had a 50 min commute down a two lane country road. I saw so much wildlife, it hardly felt like a commute at all. Perfect way to unwind after a work day.

It is actually quite lovely. I tend to grumble about the time and gas money spent, then forget how lucky I am to have such beautiful scenery. I hear horror stories about some of the big city commutes people have. Few miles, but hours of time. It is those stories that remind me to quit complaining.

Quite often I have my camera with me and stop to snap a few. I once considered doing a photo project. A year of views through the windshield... or something like that.

EmilyRocks -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 10:57:51 AM)

Work? What's work. Do you mean like having a job? I've heard of jobs, but I've never actually seen one around here.

NuevaVida -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 11:23:18 AM)

The photo project idea sounds awesome. Very artsy and right down my alley. I was going to do a calendar project of pathways. I had taken various photos of garden stairways and various paths that seemed to veer to nowhere. I might still do that some day.

Cute but sad. I hope you get to commute again soon!

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 11:29:03 AM)

I have an arduous three mile commute along paved roads. [:o]

INORITE!! Completely spoiled! For many years I drove 45 minutes to Job #1, half an hour to Job #2, then 40 minutes home, so I am really glad that I work close to home. It was definitely a factor in buying this practice. I've worked in this building for...15 years? Something like that.

I love driving, but commuting time is time added to my work day.

NuevaVida -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 11:42:28 AM)

Since they just converted us IT folks from exempt to non exempt, commuting has become a bit more stressful. Gotta make it in time to clock in. Used to just be able to skip lunch but now we can't, so getting in late means staying late. One morning the lady in front of me stopped for a yellow light, which put me in the next quarter hour click in bracket. It was one of those rare "frustrated" moments.

LaTigresse -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 11:48:55 AM)

That sucks.

NuevaVida -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 12:27:10 PM)

I wouldn't mind it so much other than it's total chaos here and there are plans to move us to a building another half hour away. So I'm applying for other jobs in THIS building and will see how it goes.

Right now getting into work 15 min late gets me out in the "it's now gonna take 45 min to get home" commute window.

I keep reminding myself I'm fortunate to have a job. Some days I have to remind myself a LOT!!

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 5:15:56 PM)

Mine is 7/10ths of a mile going, 1 mile coming home. I make a circle so I only make right turns. If I went in later I would walk to work, but I go in really early and just am not fond of walking in the dark.

Since I moved here last year, I have really come to appreciate the short drive. I think of it as I got a raise!

barelynangel -> RE: Rush Hour (8/15/2011 5:30:18 PM)

How long is your commute to work? Depends when i leave -- normally 20-30 minutes, otherwise 1 hr to 1.25 hrs.
Do you drive? Carpool? Take public transportation? Drive

What do you do to pass the time? Listen to music? Talk radio? Books on CD? Contemplate your next post on CM? Think about work?   listen to my audiobooks - sometimes music - when people call me (damn people know the best time to talk to me on the bloody phone is on my drives lol), a lot of time conduct work on the phone when driving as i leave later than most, i can usually start making calls before i get to work = some days i dictate things on my drive or this many times is the best tme for my boss and i to conference.

If you drive, do you speed? Do other commuters frustrate you?  Yeah i am sure i speed, sometimes other drivers frustrate me.

Do you have a rush hour commute or do you work different hours?  Usually i leave right after rush hour in the morning -- 8:30ish and i usually leave work between 6:30 and 7:30 going home.  Luckily i get to come and go as i please as long as i clock in 7.5 hours a day.

What's your commute like? I leave when i do because i hate hate rush hour traffic.   I like easy commutes lol.  It's not bad at all.  The only thing that can make it bad is when there is an accident because EVERYTHING just stops.  Blah!

That's awesome. One of the things some of us at work are talking about is, if we get moved to the cross-town office, it's going to have quite an affect on our gas bill.  Bleh.

Accidents do have a way with seriously impacting a commute.  Fortunately for me, my highway driving is only 2 offramps, the rest is city streets.  One of the main streets is always backed up but I discovered some side streets that no one else seems to take.  So if there's an accident on the main street, I veer off and sail on in. Whew.
