I hate spiders but as an art piece this is a fine specimen. Did you notice how the markings on his back are like skulls? lol I had to look him up to see if he was poisonous.

ahhhhh okay gotcha -- THAT would probably explain it. we do get some pretty nice breezes back home.
i have seen other smaller spiders go floating, though. =p it's creepy. not quite as many of them as RS was talking about though... eeeeep!!!

once a small brown spider built a web in the bed of one of the trucks. i got to watch it take the old, dewy web totally apart, and then build a new one.

spiders are pretty snazzy, as long as they're  -> -> -> -> over there -> -> ->

THIS

I have this weird morbid fascination with spiders. Meaning they scare the living bejeesus out of me and gross me out, but I really like watching videos and seeing pictures of them.

Pretty much what they said, too. *sigh*

Yay for everhope, though!

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: -=Resident Spider=- (8/16/2011 3:54:29 AM)

Seriously cool spider, RS can we call him Boris?

0ldhen -> RE: -=Resident Spider=- (8/16/2011 4:32:21 AM)

What a beauty...I love spiders. I let them live in the house unless the put there webs where the can be seen, then I relocate them outside or into one of the garages.

Aynne88 -> RE: -=Resident Spider=- (8/16/2011 4:39:44 AM)

Wow. You are far nicer then me Oldhen. That, and any other spider, would meet a rapid demise via the chemical/shoe combination. Sorry Everhope, but those things scare the fuck out of me.

Great idea, I love that song !  Boris The Spider (song - youtube)
But . . . Boris is "Black and hairy, very small ".
Our St. Andrew's Spider is rather smooth and a pretty good size.
If you could see how it  goes wild swinging it's arms like a conga player, you'd understand how I came to call it Ricky (Ricardo).

I'll try and snap a pic before I relocate it.

I'd love to see that, actually, it sounds really cool. I also like spiders, just not crawling on me. I find them, and most things in nature incredibly fascinating, love to watch them doing their "things".

LillyBoPeep -> RE: -=Resident Spider=- (8/16/2011 10:06:46 AM)

my aunt just emailed me a picture of one of these guys from the place back home. ^_^ building a giant web across the rose of sharon hedges. =p

So do I, I sing that song every time I see a spider. I can see why it doesn't fit though. Is there any way you could shoot video instead of taking pictures?

I love spiders, but I think most everyone knows that by now. I would be so excited if I found this spider. I'd probably set up camp & watch it.

My daughter was frightened of spiders when she was little, so of course we read Charlotte's Web. Then one day I noticed an egg sac in the lily of the valley bush outside her bedroom window. We went out every day to check on the progress & one day, sure enough, they hatched. The bush was crawling with babies. We watched them blow away on the wind. After that, she'd lost her fear. She's not crazy about them like I am, but at least she's not afraid.

One of the cool things about living in the basement is all the spiders who also live down here.

I’m a nice guy and all but I’m not gonna’ put a roof over the Resident Spider’s head.  Besides, I have no outbuildings.  The garage is attached.  Nope . . . it’s off to the pond area for Ricky!

That is intersting. But I'll admit, I hate spiders. As pretty as the spiders are in the pics you provided they still creep me out. Hopefully its something I can get over one day.

Joins your club [&:][:'(][:'(][:'(]

Two nights ago I woke up to use the toilet and as I use my flash light on the phone when finding my way, not that it would be that necessary but I did so...(big mistake) I saw a huge spider next to my door [:(][:(][:(]

I searched wild for my cat pepper as she knows her job is to eat them when I call her...but then I remembered that she is outside and not up in my room with me, as it was originally planned [8|] and her brother curry couldn't be arsed to catch that...so unless she found it last night whilst I was asleep, it is still up there somewhere and gosh do I hate that fact [:'(][:(]

But glad you found that at YOUR place [&:][:)]

favesclava -> RE: -=Resident Spider=- (8/17/2011 5:43:01 AM)

wow . some else like me. at work i'm called to catch and release spiders. they know better than to harm them when i'm around. if people would look at the webs and the critters caught in them they would leave them in place . some of those are way scarier than the spiders.

If the Resident Spider does anything interesting, everhope said she will try and catch some video of it.  If she does, I’ll post it.

I think it is an amazing coincidence that of all the species of spider in Florida, a St. Andrew’s Cross spider chose my patio.  Now if there was any such thing as a ponygirl spider . . .

This was not lost on me either... I giggled when I read that in the spider description. [:D]

you know what's scarier than a spider?
HOUSE CENTIPEDES.
that is a creature from the 8th ring of hell.

they eat a lot of creepy pests, too, and they'll engage a spider in battle, but sheeesh... sheesh, sheesh sheesh...
my last apartment had tons of them. they're horrible. =p

Scorpions are worse.

Your nicer then I am.  We are on a first name basis with our exterminator who is used to coming out at a moments notice.  Living where we do, spiders rule and they are reluctant to give up territory, so we have a truce.  Anything outside that somehow avoids the poison sprayed twice a year can live, but if it crosses the threshold, well...their lifespan is shortened considerably.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: -=Resident Spider=- (8/17/2011 7:39:49 AM)

scorpions don't really bother me; their construction makes sense. =p but house centipedes? what is up with those progressively longer legs in the back? when they're laying out flat, you can't tell which end is the front. and they climb up walls knowing they don't actually have the leggy fortitude to succeed, so they fall off and land on people. and for such a small creature, they make the most disgustingly loud "thwap!" when they hit, even if it's a carpeted floor. =p
AND they can run 1.5 feet per second. how on earth does that make sense? they will dart into the nearest dark space if the light comes on, even if that means running under your dress or robe. =p yagh. yagh yagh yagh.
