Status: offline 		I was wondering how come places that are basically grunt work jobs require GED's. Do lack of GED's really make your work abilitie less on a logical scale?

Wouldn't someone still be able to come to work and bust their ass at work regardless? How does aGED make you any more qualified to do hard labor in the case of some jobs.  I don't see how a ged makes you more able to unbox groceries or load warehouses, or any of the pychical labor some jobs require

Status: offline 		In my opinion employers look for either a dimploma or a GED to show that you have obtained the following basic skills.
 
1. The ability to learn.
2. The ability to read, write, and computate.
3. The ability to think problem solve.
4. The ability to set goals and motivate yourself
5. The ability to communicate - listen and speak
6. The ability to negatiate within groups or among others

These skills are important to productivity and the bottom line. Think about it if an employee can not do one or more of these things it would hinder them and perhaps cost the company money in the long run. It simply is not worth wild to most employees to take that risk or to take on the added expense of providing those skills to someone when in most areas there are many people lined up even for labor jobs.

That being said I also know many people who have degrees who can not find work. So in my opinion it does work both ways.

Status: offline 		It's not about intelligence.  It is about follow-through.  If a person won't get a measley GED, what is there is to indicate that they will show up on time, and each day, and get along with the other workers, and treat customers with courtesy, and not do drugs on the job, and not streal from the company?

I say I'll be there and I show up everytime. I take my prommises very seriously,. However I guess it makes sense employers demand their employes further themself as much as possible.

If you have that type of self discipline, there is no reason whatsoever you could not get a GED.  So you should.

Status: offline 		I was always told since I couldn't do math I'd never pass a GED, I'm a second grade math level and every one always said that GED's had high math level skills.  I of course didn't check for myself, at the time believing what every one said. however now I am looking into  either that or finishing the credits I need.

That's the best reply possible. If you're dependable, and hardworking, and intelligent, then prove it. Employers don't know you from Courtney Love (especially if you smell like booze and left-over sperm), so how do you expect them to trust you with a job? When a person hires you, they invest in you. Would you invest in stocks without knowing their history, or, worse, seeing a bad history?

Sadly for you, the lack of a diploma or GED portrays a lack of determination and application. Period. There's no 'get-to-know-you' dinner, no 10 Questions game to find out about you. You simply get passed over as they look for someone who has shown that they can finish what they start.

I don't tell you this to upset you, or make you think that I'm being hard on you, but you HAVE to see it from their point, so that you can understand what perspective employers are looking for, and so that you can become who they're looking for.

If you take your promises very seriously, make the promise to yourself that you'll take and pass the GED test. That will be the most important promise you can make anyone.

Status: offline 		I am not an expert, but in my limited experience the system is set up to allow people to succeed.   Often you can substitute out subjects that you are very poor in.  You may have to meet certain minimium stardards though.  Only grade 2 math?  Are you sure?  You can add and subtract and that is all?

Status: offline 		There are many online courses as well as local courses for adult education. Many offer tutors. It took me taking my math class in college 2xs on credit no credit before I passed it! So that I totally understand.
 
I wanna share a story with you.
In high school I knew this guy he was wonderful.
He was funny and street smart but books and classrooms where really frustrating for him.
He couldn't sit still long enough.
Our Sr. yr his mom passed away and soon after he dropped out of high school. He legally could since he was 18. He went to work for a local construction company at first he did clean up, then learned roofing then other framing and evetually he became a union member.
 
Five years ago the owner of the construction company asked him if he would like to become partners. He is know partners in one of the largest commercial construction companies in the BayArea.
 
He never got his diploma or GED. It can happen but he worked hard and he clawed his way to wear he is.
 
Keep your chin up and faith in yourself.

Status: offline 		subtle, yes I don't know times tables or anything higher than basic. I need paper to write out subtractions and stuff. Math is an extreamly weak subject for me. Thing was today I went in for a volunteer positiona nd they're all of a sudden out of the blue we're sorry you need a GED minimum to volunteer here, so I've been thrown into this blind and into deep waters so ro speak.

Status: offline 		My understanding is that GED is for a high school diploma.  You would have to have education up to that point in order to qualify for it. 

Having a high school diploma (or GED) shows your employer that you have the knowledge and skills to function in the work place and be able to perform basic tasks.  It shows them many things - that you can read, write, have basic knowledge of grammar and spelling, that you can comprehend what you read, that you have problem-solving skills. 

I'm curious to know why you didn't finish school, and like subtlesubie asked - why do you think you have only 2nd grade math skills?

Status: offline 		Check your local used book store they usually have a couple different GED prep books for not much money. The worst thing that happens is you take a look maybe even a GED prep class and decide it's not for you. Then you're out maybe a couple hours, less than $5 and will know for sure.
My nieces are not the smartest girls, they proved this by not mastering the use of condoms amongst other things. I mean really am I the only one that thinks that if your cat gets into your birth control and plays with it teeth and claws that common sense dictates you throw it away?   but I digress, if they can pass the GED you should be able to if you put your mind to it. It will also show you and future employers that you finish what you start.

What kind of volunteer work requires a GED? Most places are so desperate for volunteers that a warm body and a pulse is all you need. Breathing oxygen is optional.

Even still, I would encourage you to pursue it.  Find out precisely what is required for your state.  And if you want, report your findings back here.  I would be curious to know.

Status: offline 		Sacramento Children's Recieving home. He said they encurage their kids to further themself as much as possible, and if it gets out one of the vols don't have one it'll give the kids the idea a dip or a GEd isn't important.

Status: offline 		I had thought that if I was not to  far away credits wise, I could finish those courses and get a diploma. GED Is not the only option, they have corespondances by snail mail, to finish too.
