Iamsemisweet -> Who else carries? (8/15/2011 12:53:43 PM)

I have been carrying concealed for a couple of years, plus I always sleep with a gun on the nightstand, or under the pillow. I do it because I get threatened once in a while be ause of my job and because I live in a rural area with not much in the way of police protection, and lots of wild animals.

Anyway, the man i have been seeing found a gun under my pillow and expressed his concern about my paranoia. My feeling is, just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

I recognize this is a hot button issue with a lot of people, and I am hoping this thread doesn't take a nasty turn. In any case, who else carries and why?

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 1:06:45 PM)

Ive never felt a need to, but would if I did, without question.

One persons reasoned concerns are another's paranoia. You know the difference, he can learn it!

Moonhead -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 1:09:04 PM)

This is guns not the clap, then?
Arse.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 1:12:32 PM)

So much for not taking a nasty turn.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I know Moonhead, I rarely can either.  At least yours was kinda funny.

littlewonder -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 2:55:12 PM)

never have felt a need to own one. I'm about as nonparanoid as they come, don't believe in conspiracy theories, don't think the world is out to get me <although some days I swear God is playing one huge joke on me>.

After having been in situations that brought me close to death by the hands of other people, I've learned how, why and where to stay out of such situations.

joybaby -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 3:11:53 PM)

I have a CCW permit, but I've yet to carry except to the range. My gun is, however, loaded each night before bed and unloaded each morning. I live in a county that let go a huge number of its police force a year or so ago, and the sheriff came out and said that if he were an ordinary citizen, he'd buy a gun. It's a large county and he knows that the few remaining officers cannot protect everyone. I have no close neighbors on my side of the street, and i really doubt i could make enough noise to alert the ones across the street from me....the houses are just too far apart. I have two dogs whose job it is to alert me if there is something that concerns them, but then it's up to me to protect myself (and them). When seconds count, the police are minutes away ;-)

Owner59 -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 3:12:49 PM)

A dog will go ten times further in protecting people from bad guys then a gun.

The deterrent affect, especially.

Criminals and folks up to no good are instinctively scared of dogs.Cops too,to a degree.

Being cautious and careful isn`t paranoia,just sensible.

Hand guns are much more dangerous than long-arms by just the fact that one can shoot themselves with it,in a tussle or just with normal handling.Folks should consider that when thinking about being a gun owner.

Long guns are inherently safer b/c you really have to try to turn it on yourself to hurt yourself with them.

The best home protection is a dog and a shot gun.

AtlantianLord -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 3:19:08 PM)

Did you know more people shoot themselves accidently than people actually die from being shot by people they don't know,  if you allow guns in the hands of ordinary people your going to get gun crime ban the gun  and let go of your Right to bear arms your not going to need it anyway and why do you need to shoot Ducks with an M16 Assault rifle doh

Owner59 -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 3:29:19 PM)

Yes I did know that.

With the right to bare arms comes great responcibility.

joybaby -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 3:36:58 PM)

My dogs are a chocolate lab and a rat terrier. The lab *might* lick an intruder to death, but that'd be the extent of her protective abilities. The rat terrier would try mightily, but unless the bad guy is approximately the size of a large butterfly, she's also doomed to fail. The fact of the matter is, dogs can easily be taken out if the intruder has a gun or another weapon. I agree that a shotgun is really good for home defense-less chance you'll miss your target, that's for sure. However, my handgun holds a 16 round magazine and I have two of those. You're not going to change my mind, I'm not going to change yours.

Termyn8or -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 3:49:31 PM)

I rarely carry, and when I do I am looking to make trouble. You got a problem with that just stay the fuck away from me. I don't shoot people for fucking my sinister or scratching my car, or taking my parking spot or even cranking up my stereo and blowing a tweeter. No stupid shit like that. The power of life nd death means more than these fucking toys.

In the last five years I have worn my sidearm about three times. I am EXTREMELY aware of it and make sure not to drink much or anything, I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS. You dan't take shit like this lightly. But I WILL kill if pressed. If I have to. With reason.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 3:56:15 PM)

I am considering buying a shot gun also.  The handgun is small, and I like to take it with me when I go in the woods, but I do agree that a shotgun, along with my rather unscary dogs, would be better for home defense.
If it makes any difference, I am not just concerned about human intruders.  There are a lot of bears, cougars and coyotes in this area.

That`s so funny and so typical.

But the deterrent affect is still there.

Bad guys don`t know that our pups are such sweethearts.

They see an unpredictable animal with a toothy end and they choose to move on.J

ust a dog barking sends fright/flight messages down the spine,for those up to no good.

Oh Fab, I'm glad they put lemon freshened borax in you. Your brain is so fucking squeaky clean, damn. There is no way you could ever stop over and talk to me, you would just croak, and I would not have to waste a bullet.

Humanity is BASED ON the ability to kill each other, YOU think that power belongs only in the hands of governments. They have "convinced" you, that means brainwashing. The power of life and death is MINE.

So much for that.

We have black bears who mostly run away when you see them.

My dog just the other day chased one out of the yard be barking and jumping after we pulled in and got out of the truck.

Never saw anything like it before,with a bark I hadn`t heard before.

She`s such a good watch dog.

joybaby -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 4:13:30 PM)

That's fine. If you think that an 8.8 pound dog and her tail wagging big buddy are enough of a deterrent, then go with that. Good for you. I'm not trying to stop you. I'm not trying to change your mind. I am, *typically*, willing to let you have your own opinion and choose what you think is best for you and your family. Sorry about that.

BamaD -> RE: Who else carries? (8/15/2011 4:24:40 PM)

I carry because when I worked for the sheriff's office (not as a deputy) my boss (who was a deputy) told me to always carry.  I agree though that a shotgun is the best home defense weapon, with the right loads it will stop an intruder without penetrating walls.
