OMG!!! HILLY!!

You should see the RAGE on my facebook over one dumb bitch's commentary about that poor capy!! We think that someone was overwhelmed by keeping it as a companion and dumped it. If I were closer, or deeply wealthy... hell YEAH I would be rescuing that poor thing! There are two breeders who would take it in, at least.

eta: and they live about 15 years in captivity, sometimes longer.

Hibbie, I certainly hope someone is able to catch and place that little guy.  Why people have to release non-native animals into the wild, especially ones who have relied on humans to feed and protect them, just amazes me.  I think they are really cute creatures, and apparently, judging by their rising popularity, a pretty good pet.

Maybe the local zoo can trap it and add it to their displays.

They are wonderful companion animals in the right environment. They are not for everyone, though. I hope the Paso Robles capy gets rounded up, though at least she is in a reasonably safe environment. In the wild, their enemies are caiman, anacondas, and jaguars. I don't think a coyote would take one on, but a puma might.

I've seen pictures of them before, and they are cute.  And at least it still seems to be healthy and doing well.  I hope they're able to capture it and send it to a good home with appropriate habitat.

Why not?  They take on cattle and sheep

Word is the California fish & game folks are going to let the capy wander peacefully. It's not like a solo capy is a threat. I hope she finds her family, though. They are not solitary animals in the wild, she must be lonely, hot springs or not.

They are actually very friendly. I travel to Brazil. If you get out in the country they are very cute and will not bother you. And will accept any food you toss there way. They almost remind me of a pigeon they way they scavenge over food.

Which is odd, since they are vegetarians! They are generally mellow, but their giant chisel teeth can do DAMAGE if they get riled.

French Fries is a potatoe LOL!

There is a public park in the town of Campinas Brazil. Its free to the public. There are literally thousands of those things running around the park in the open. And you are right, it is still a wild animal. And any wild animal can do damage when riled

Edited to add in Brazil french fries are known a batatas fritas
