There aren't that many.  Just enough to fuck up the works.

I can't wait to find out. I wouldn't place much faith in wilbur as a prognosticator, he is pretty much wrong 100% of the time.

Here is the original article this is based on - http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/17/opinion/crashing-the-tea-party.html?_r=1

The interesting parts are -

quote:

"Beginning in 2006 we interviewed a representative sample of 3,000 Americans as part of our continuing research into national political attitudes, and we returned to interview many of the same people again this summer. As a result, we can look at what people told us, long before there was a Tea Party, to predict who would become a Tea Party supporter five years later. We can also account for multiple influences simultaneously — isolating the impact of one factor while holding others constant.

Our analysis casts doubt on the Tea Party’s “origin story.” Early on, Tea Partiers were often described as nonpartisan political neophytes. Actually, the Tea Party’s supporters today were highly partisan Republicans long before the Tea Party was born, and were more likely than others to have contacted government officials. In fact, past Republican affiliation is the single strongest predictor of Tea Party support today.

What’s more, contrary to some accounts, the Tea Party is not a creature of the Great Recession. Many Americans have suffered in the last four years, but they are no more likely than anyone else to support the Tea Party. And while the public image of the Tea Party focuses on a desire to shrink government, concern over big government is hardly the only or even the most important predictor of Tea Party support among voters.
So what do Tea Partiers have in common? They are overwhelmingly white, but even compared to other white Republicans, they had a low regard for immigrants and blacks long before Barack Obama was president, and they still do.

More important, they were disproportionately social conservatives in 2006 — opposing abortion, for example — and still are today. Next to being a Republican, the strongest predictor of being a Tea Party supporter today was a desire, back in 2006, to see religion play a prominent role in politics.

And Tea Partiers continue to hold these views: they seek “deeply religious” elected officials, approve of religious leaders’ engaging in politics and want religion brought into political debates. The Tea Party’s generals may say their overriding concern is a smaller government, but not their rank and file, who are more concerned about putting God in government."

And as the authors noted, they had been running this survey before there was a Tea Party, and they thus claimed they could see who joined it and what their political background was prior to the 'creation' of this political grouping.

So according to them, the Tea Party is in large part a GOP white social conservative Christian subgroup. If this is the case, they have been handed a set of very adversely loaded demographic dice

Because nobody ever went broke by UNDERestimating the intelligence of the American public.

I think that is a quote by PT Barnum. If anyone has better info, please feel free to correct who it was.

Good observation pa

Figures dont lie but liars do figure

It doesnt matter how the leftists at MSNBC and CNN and the New York Times etc twist and contort their polling data, the real polls (the ones that matter) betray their bullshit and their lies

Because democrats and republicans both tend to think that winning an election is a mandate, when it mostly is a rejection of the other side. Swing or independent voters often win elections, not the rabid dem or the rabid republican. Look at election cycles the last 12 years. Looking at them is like watching the stock market gyrate back and forth.

Tea Party people are in congress because dems fucked up and acted like God for a while. Don't worry, republicans will do the same. Both parties are too stupid to realize they're not voted in because of their policies but because the other side is sucking pretty damned bad at the moment.

Just my own thoughts, but it is probably at least partly BECAUSE of those freshman congressmen that the Tea Party now enjoys their lack of popularity.  They were voted in for their own version of "hope and change" and now the American public has had a chance to see how detrimental they really are to the welfare of the country.

They can't help it. Neither can dems. Both sit on the sidelines gnashing their teeth for the chance to force some agenda item down on the other side. What we have is a dysfunctional system being upheld by a population that can't think for itself. People cry about the tea party, when in fact, there should be a half dozen parties just like it. We are where we are because both left and right have assimilated stringently opposing camps as a segment of their bases.

Which leaves everyone else blowing in which ever ill wind is flapping the flag. The only good thing about it is you don't need a compass to determine direction since we only have two directions.
