NiceGuyNihilist -> Any Kettlebell Lifters Here? (8/19/2011 11:29:58 AM)

My gym membership's about to expire, and I've decided I hate doing my workouts in a building. So I bought a 35-pound kettlebell. I've been working out with it for about two weeks, and have already noticed changes in my physique. I've lost some of the muscular bulk I'd gained from heavy lifting at the gym, but I've lost a lot of fat as well. My muscles feel *harder* than they did when they were huge--leaner, meaner, more functional. There's no question my heart and lungs have improved. Doing a standing military press with a single kettlebell is superior to doing one with two dumbbells or a barbell, IMO, because in the latter two exercises, the balanced weight supports itself to some degree, while with a single kettlebell, you have to contract your abs and ass hard to prevent yourself from falling down. The balance of the kettlebell forces you to grip it hard and with a straight wrist no matter what exercises you're doing, which means that you almost can't help but develop an iron grip. And military pressing with the bottom of the bell facing up? Godly! Ah! I'm in love!

Time to greet the neighbors with some friendly Alice In Chains while I make love to my little black friend. >:)

No, I did buy one but its down in Socal and I wont be back for a few months. I like the concept and that the exercises are more full body.

So, how long do you work out for and what exercises/routine do you do?

Probably more than you do. I will be sad to see it go, but sometimes the pleasure of sadism comes with a price.

i'm really interested in kettlebells; someone i knew who was using them was having really good results with them. plus they're something new (to me) and having something new to try might help me avoid getting bored. there are a few gyms here who have good instruction; i've heard over and over that you need to be taught proper form before you go out on your own -- did you have any kettlebell training or are you just doing it yourself?

lazarus1983 -> RE: Any Kettlebell Lifters Here? (8/20/2011 4:05:27 AM)

I use them, and have taught kbell classes at my facility. Where I work out now, they don't have any, but since I,just do the basic two handed swing, I use the dumbbells.

MyVision -> RE: Any Kettlebell Lifters Here? (8/20/2011 4:08:13 AM)

I use a kettlebell also because I hate gyms.
One tool for a total body work out. And no need to spend hours to feel good.

The swinging in front of a mirror can be dangerous lol..keep distance ;)

Discovered it through systema.

ps I use Pavel's books as lessons

I am also interested in these thought haven't done a a whole lot of research on them yet.   My concern is my back, just by watching them being used, form is very important or you really could end up harming your back and not realizing it.  So i need to be sure i do enough research and work out with someone who can watch me especially when i start getting fatigued to make sure i don't switch to using my back for the lifting.

Lazarus, do you find a lot of people do this or is the form and movement enough to keep even new users on track?

Even overhere (little Holland ) there are lots of schools with certified teachers
The exercises..when taught well..even improves your back.
The swinging with a kettlenbell is a more gentle feeling to my back then normal weights.

you get lighter weights..they are from 4kg and up..I believe.

barelynangel -> RE: Any Kettlebell Lifters Here? (8/20/2011 7:27:39 AM)

Yeah i have haphazardly looked for some classes and such around where i live and even branched out around Nashville  and found a couple.    But little Holland must be more advanced than Nashville, TN, which is on a good traffic day is 30 minutes to downtown but that isn't like most downtowns they don't have anything downtown.   I have a hard time finding a decent gym outside of the Y that doesn't have an obnoxious cost to it, much less a place that 1) isn't a 40 minute drive from my house and 2) doesn't cost an arm and a leg, or 3) require a couple months commitment and 4) many places want you to be a member before you can take their classes or the programs are personal training type expense which right now is not on my agenda OR lol classes start at the obnoxious hour of 5 or 5:30 when i usually have a hard time getting out of work before 5 which means i will be late for any class that starts at 5:30..

All in all, no, its not that easy to find classes that specialize in one thing and don't cost an arm and a leg to attend or that don't require a committment.

I've used kettlebells in Crossfit workouts. Form is important, especially if you're doing something like a sumo dead lift.

You need to maintain the lumbar curve in your back while you're doing any kind of squat, lift, etc. to avoid back injury.

Another things to do is buy the smaller kettlebells to start. If you haven't worked out in a long time, go for the little bitty ones. It may be good to have a few sessions with a trainer at a gym to check your form and get a feel for the weight you should use.

MyVision -> RE: Any Kettlebell Lifters Here? (8/20/2011 10:17:21 AM)

I bought a small one to start with...20kg...lol
and a 12 kg and 16kg.

the 20 is for the swinging stuff, for the other stuff it will break my wrists.
(doing it on and off now for 2 years....but swinging heavy weights indoors....worries me by times..lol)

that would be the first time then for Holland :P
On you tube..and kettlebell websites are some small starter video's. The light kettlebells are good to start.
The won't give you extra strain on the back and knees.

Gyms are bloody expensive overhere too...and good ones not really close.

Angel, you might want to check out a local Crossfit gym.  The workouts can be scaled for any level of fitness.

Barelynangel, kbells have grown in popularity in the past few years here in America, but they've been around and been used in Russia for some time. The reason they're not more popular is because they're really really hard. There are dozens of different exercises you can perform with a kbell, but the most basic is the two handed swing. Is that what you're asking about?

If so, then your back will be fine, as long as you do it correctly. The biggest problem people have is they want to use their arms, their upper back, during the movement. Your arms are loose, and are only moved by the momentum you generate with your lower body.

A proper swing is not a squat motion. Your knees are unlocked, core tense, and you let the kbell's momentum pull you down, before driving back out as hard and fast as you can, squeezing your glutes as hard as you can. You're not slowing the weight down, you're letting it complete its swing, like a pendulum. And when it comes up, you're not pulling it up with your arms.

It's actually a very natural movement for the body. I've done swings with kbells up to 130lbs, and never had any pain issues.

Termyn8or -> RE: Any Kettlebell Lifters Here? (8/20/2011 8:10:15 PM)

Umm, I don't know what to tell yall, but even right after I got sick (I mean after recovering some) I shadowboxed with ten pound steel weights in each hand.

I'm not putting this down but it seems more like an aerobic thing than strength builder. I need my strength built back up. They seem to have heavier ones but for the little ones this one site was talking ninety bucks. Hell, I think I could use power tools or something.

My opinion, might be wrong. If so tell me. I ain't got all year to work out, I need super fast results in strength.

T^T

MyVision -> RE: Any Kettlebell Lifters Here? (8/21/2011 12:34:09 AM)

then try it

when I first used the 20kg kettlebell...for a 2 handed swing....I felt like my heart and long were exploding.
I just did it 10 minutes..and I was exhausted.
Normally I work out with weights. But this just felt great and satisfying. You really use your body.

For super fast results, you need to train super hard ;)
Miracles don't happen.

ps. I know they use kettlebells to get movie stars in shape....fast.
