Practice at home with a book on your head. I know it seems trite, but it works....lol

Oh you want to really have fun? Practice pony steps in your high heels ... Basically step as high as you can, as gracefully as you can ... Now, do it faster ... Do try not to fall down though.

I do understand your difficulties. It is even more difficult for we males to learn to walk successfully in high heels. I went thru the problems and surmounted them and now  heels are just easy....  I was amazed to see pre-adolescent females who were already naturals in high heels - I guess some folks are just naturals!

First. I had to make sure that my arches could bend over the arch shape of the shoes. Male arches were not used to bending that way, and I had to do a good deal of stretching to make that happen. You can do this with your hands just bending your foot forward.  As a female, you may not even need this... To be comfortable walking, it is necessary when extending your leg forward that you are able to place your foot flat on the floor without much tension... That is a critical element.

Then I started in 3 inch heels, not very high for a size 11 shoe.... I wore them every day for hours around the house, doing all kinds of chores.  I also continued to stretch my arches...

Then up to four inch heels -and this is grand as the shoes begin to look a lot prettier! Same thing, many hours of wear! And then I began to attempt "model" style walking - that really helps a lot - literally walking on  a thin line - and doing turns.

Five inch heels - which is all that I wear these days. Again the same process. It is important to note that some shoes are more difficult to walk in than others. Fredericks has some cheap, and flimsey shoes that give no support at alll - although their more expensive ones have been good.

Summary: Practice and stretch. The foot structure must be flexible and the supporting muscles very strong. Doing toe raises is good. Your balance will come if you want the result badly enough.

Wishing you well - for god knows, I love the look and the feel of high heels!

Richard

Long ago, I used to wear heels as comfortably as I wear tennis shoes, but then as I got older I stopped wearing heels as much until finally not at all..I purchased some beautiful heels not to long ago, put them on and promptly realized I could not go out in public with these beautiful shoes on..I could not even take one step without wanting to fall or wince...There was a forum posted not long ago about wearing heels..and someone suggested to wear in house ,only walking in them as you vacuumed, this will build your tolerence (carpet being difficult)..along with vacuum helping you to maintain balance as you get used to wearing them...be well..Tempting

I would just add- don't get heels too high for the size of your feet. I'm 5'1, with small feet, and they're not physically big enough to pull off more than about  four and a half inch heels without hurting myself or falling off them. You're taller than me so you might be able to get away with more.
Also remember your centre of balance is suddenly much higher and the area you have to balance on is much smaller. don't try to walk the same way you would walk in trainers, because you can't, and it will look stiff and unnatural. Let your hips swing, take smaller and more delicate steps, and don't worry if you need to walk slower. It's all extremely seductive and feminine so enjoy the way they make you walk.

I think the advice youve recieved here is excellent.

Id like to add some stretching exercises of a different variety, or head space if you will.
So youve discovered that you get hot for shoes. Take a quick but thorough stock take of your available drug of choice, shoes. Do you seriously have enough? Have you considered the long term effects of such a fetish. I mean, have you really considered the magnitute of what you embark upon. Shoes can be very expensive. You may have to resort to crime to pay for them eventually. Do you have the means to care for your new charges, as they arrive. Is there enough room in your closet? That you wish to break out of. If not, take half the room in the closet your partner is taking up. remove all of their articles and burn them. There, youve just freed up 50% of that hitherto, wasted space!
Make sure that your feet are ready to recieve the luxury you are to bestow them. Now is NOT a time for unpedicured feet. Im a complete foot snob. I see gorgeous shoes, WASTED on the youth today. yellowing toenails, chipped polish? in my red silk and diamond sandles? i think not. Along with all that wardrobe space you now have, you must set the scene (your feet) to display your prize(s).
Budgetting for your new drug, is a must. Or you will be forced to prostitute yourself to your parnter for your next fix.
You will become insatiable for them. And before you know it, you will be like me,

I would suggest that you start off with a lower heel until you are completely comfortable walking in them. Also, I would try ankle boots, they give great support to your ankles so you don't feel so weeble-wobbly. The thicker the heel is the easier it is to walk in them. Personally, I prefer spiked heels but I've worn them for years and if necessary I can run in them.

This is also great advice. I wear a size 5 depending on the shoe and they just don't come in 5 inch heels.. with the exception of ballet shoes. But that's ok, with feet that small you really don't want to take that much away from your center of gravity... lol.

I would simply like to point out that it is NOT more difficult for men to learn to walk in high heels on a physical level .. Maybe on an intellectual level. Teenage girls are *expected* to be naturals on high heels. As are submissive females. That doesn't make it so ...

Men, however, are not ... Not even men who like to cross dress ... Its expected that men will have a harder time learning. So ... You do.

I once wore dresses and heels all the time.  I don't anymore, as it's not appropriate for my job and I don't go anywhere but home and doing stuff with kids or decorating cakes and cake stuff...and it's really not appropriate in those situations either.  I do, however, have a pair of black patent leather babydoll pumps that are to die for.  They have about a 4 inch heel.  I wear them when an occasion calls for it.  I have no problem with them, other than I MUST take smaller steps, walk more slowly and sometimes require the assistance of a strong male arm when walking on a very smooth floor or street.  Practice, practice, practice.

Hi sweetsubie

I agree wholeheartedly with you: high heels are wonderful.

Wonderful, but not comfortable, not straight away, so you must be careful at first.

Get a pair of shoes that are WELL MADE. That is the first step (hehe just made a pun unwitittingly :-) ) . Very few high shoes that are cheap will do the job: think of it as an investment, and as personal training. Go to the sales; check for the structure of the shoe, and how it fits your foot.

Somebody replied that you ought to practice at home. She was perfectly right. If you have never done ballet, or any kind of exercise which requires for you to find balance on your toes, you need the practice.

At first, walk slowly. Make sure there is a mirror in front of you: watch your steps (:-)   The trick is in keeping the upper body upright, and the hips supple: slowly you will find your balance on your toes, that is where it's at, not at the heels. Do not sway your arms about, and certainly NO TRIPPING lol! It is better to be slow and sultry.

It also helps to simply wear them doing silly things like, huh, watching telly! Even. That ought to get you slowly accustomed to the constraint.

Heeled boots do help, especially if you are fearful and have weak ankles. Don't get them too high, but a little higher than you are comfortable wearing. Get the wider heel to begin with for stability and wear those suckers out. Gradually work up your dress shoes with higher (and thinner) heels. Watch out for those slick soled opened toed ones  having the sticky pads under the balls of your feet help tremendously.

Do your exercises to strengthen and tone your legs, pilates, stair climbing, hamstring stretching, BALANCING. This will help you from making an embarrasing fall later (as well as make you more graceful).

Dear sweetsubie, Ladies and Gentlemen;

I am a little lady height wise and shoe wise.  I wear size 5.5EW which you can't find anywhere, so I have been sized right out of stilettos.

There have been many wonderful people posting their advice and, really cannot add much more to it.  The practice and slow measured acclimation to the final height.

In walking slightly pigeon toed has been what was taught when I did wear stilettos.  I've worn my mother's vintage heels circa 1945 through the 1960 circa vintage.

In addition, I use to rub my legs and feet in Absorbine Horse Liniment, to which warmed and relaxed my foot to knee.  The knee and balls of the feet take a lot of impact.  Gel inserted pads are wonderful.  Sadly, they were not around when I walked in my stilettos.  You shouldn't treat your feet to the knees any less than an athlete.

After a long absence from wearing stilettos, due to an accident -- I took crutches and raised them and walked in my heels and had the crutches there like non-wheeled 'training wheels'  I could immediately be in balance by putting the crutches down to the ground.  As soon as I had any feeling of discomfort.  Off went the shoes and into comfortable shoes a level lower--not totally flat.  Slow up and slow down.  Certainly it is a pain in the .... however, slow up and slow down, avoided some leg cramps and shins burning.

Perhaps the combination of all of this will give you the comfort of the art of walking in stilettos.

Respectfully submitted,
Lady Hugs
