How does it affect you?  Does it?  Any thoughts?

For me, I love that in school I'm more aware of holidays and such.  I mean, how often do you make little shoe boxes for your Valentine's Day cards?

School for me begins in what seems like ten minutes.  I will have a really heavy schedule this semester, so I've done a lot of things to prep for it - I've been cooking and freezing food like a mad woman, I have a lot of my lesson plans set up for the whole semester, and I've been weaning myself away from the computer.  My office is set up to make life easier for me, and I have all my student assignments ready.  I've prepped the projects and made examples of them.  I have been waking up and going to bed earlier to get back into the habit, and I went out and bought lots of school supplies - markers, post its, tape, extra pair of scissors, calculator, etc.  I've been washing my clothes, pulling out my fall clothes, and bought a lunch box!

Anybody else doing anything to prepare themselves/family for the school year?  (I know it's started for some folks!)

best,
sunshine

When I was a teacher, my whole life was orchestrated according to the school calendar. Now...virtually not at all. The faux-grandson is going into second grade, and the school bus stop is at the foot of our driveway, so there's that. I live right by the high school, so soon the early mornings will be marked by the sounds of marching band practice! Yay! Love those drums!

Now my calendar goes by quarters and due dates. Not nearly so glamourous!

Going to the college to get my class schedule tomorrow. I no longer have any school age children so I no longer have to concern myself with all of that thankfully. It was dreadful everytime school would begin again with my daughter... a lot of turning schedules upside down again, making sure she had everything she needed, spending a ton of money on clothes, supplies, lunch money, money saved back for fundraisers, etc....I always hated going through all of that.

Now I just have to concern myself with making sure I have my computer working for my online classes and that I have my books and all my paperwork is in order.

I'm going back to school and that's scary and exciting for me. I'm in the process of trying to get back in the swing of things. I bought school supplies and a planner. I'm in the process of setting up binders and folders for each subject. My husband made fun of me because I have a ton of pencils and pens. I also, looked into buying a few books online versus the campus bookstore to save some money. School starts in a week and since I'm going to an unknown school I'm planning a trip this week to buy my parking pass, to figure out where my classes are held, and where to park. I've already pulled out the campus map and studied it. I need to think about using the week to cook and freeze. Unless my husband goes to days as he is hoping to do we will be two ships passing in the night and I'd like for him to be able to pick a meal and heat it for himself instead of him relying on protein shakes and bagels for dinner. Plus, it will be easier on me. I had originally planned on using the morning for cooking meals, the afternoon for classes, and the evenings for studying.

It was very appropriate that I saw this thread as I put my text books away for the night. I've been working to be admitted to an extremely competitive medical program for the last 2 years, secured my spot, and started it last week  . I had to buy 8 books for one class! Holy cow! That was $600! Which wasn't too bad when you consider that my two medical texts for last semester were $300.

The whole school thing was something I decided to do once my kids were off to college. I knew I needed something to give me a fresh start, and it just feels good to use the mental gifts that I have in a productive way. I might be 'mature' (yes, that means old), but I have a lot more to give to the world in general and that's what I want to do. So I picked a field that fit my interests and talents, and have been kicking butt in every class along the way. Not to say it's easy, because it's not. It's so hard being older and coming back to school. It just feels good to throw myself into something and have it pay off though. I am a very relaxed, patient person except for anything to do with school. Then I turn into a cutthroat, lol. I have a very competitive streak in just that area. My man loves it, he knows I have to be at the top of the class or I'll die trying and for some reason that is something he treasures. I'm not exactly sure why....

I'm very lucky in that I have a very supportive man and family...they're the best, and they'll let me pester them to help me study. I made the top grade in my Advanced Anatomy and Physiology class last semester...go me! I worked like a dog for that and to get into this program - they take only 24 people a year from 3 different colleges. I'm pretty scared about the next 2 years, I know I can do this, but it's going to be very difficult.

I have to take a class online this semester and have never done that. If anyone has any tips for me I'd love it hear them!

Lizi -
YAY you!

For online classes:

Here's one thing that I do (I teach some online).... I make sure that I do all my work away from my house so that it feels like a real thing.  There is actually a specific coffee shop I go to when I do online stuff.  I only go there for school stuff.  There are other coffee shops I go to for anything else, but I like having one place.  If I'm at my house, it's much too easy to get sucked into - oh it's online, I'll do it at home... oh look, the dishes need washed, I should throw in a load of laundry... oh dang I need a shower - when was the last time I cleaned in here, it'll only take a minute!  Also, it's easy to get caught up in other computer stuff (CM, FB, email, etc.).  I use a tiimer online to get myself in the "this time is ONLINE SCHOOL TIME" mode.  (steep.it is the website - it's a tea timer, but I like the visual of it - the background gets darker as you get closer to the "done" time and it has a really nice ding.  The other one that is really nice is zendaily.com - the meditation space has a great bell but it only has 3 options - 15, 20, and 30 minutes and you don't see where you are in the process - how many minutes are left?  Sometimes that's helpful, sometimes, not.)

Also, I get dressed.  I don't wear my jammies to do online stuff.  I set aside specific times to do the online stuff.  The ritual of it gets my mind focused.

So to recap:
Real clothes.
Online timer.
No outside websites.
Not in my house / have a specific place to do this in.
Schedule it.

have fun!
sunshine

I haven't been back to college in over 15 years so this is going to be interesting for me and it looks like most of my classes will be online. I've never done online classes before but my daughter did online school for her senior year and Master has done online classes so I have a pretty good idea of what is involved.

My advice would be to make sure you don't have other commitments to take care of in the space you are using your computer.
Keep your area neat, clean and organized so you're not distracted.
Be comfortable but not so comfortable that you start slacking off
Make sure you have everything you need for your classes and that everything is working-computer, printer, scanner
Make sure you understand the program that your school provides and if you don't contact your advisor/professor/techperson to learn how to use it.

ETA: make sure that everyone knows you're busy and not to be disturbed...do not disturb sign, turn off phone, whatever you need to do.

For me this year is going to be very interesting. My life does revolve around the school calendar and organization is my best friend. I love getting to prepare my classroom and lessons for the new students and love that I'm a new town again. I'll be teaching a new grade level, but the same three subjects as at my old school which is a little bit odd, since I left the last school because it was to much. I also have a short one in fourth grade so have to make sure she is kept organized. This year I'm also starting work on my Masters while teaching.

I love the smell of coffee, old books, and sharpened pencils in the morning.

This is the first year I haven't been given my timetable for next year. Seriously.

The norm is to give teachers their next year timetable about a month or so before the summer break starts. This school - I'll get it on the Monday and start to teach on the Wednesday.

Did I mention I'm looking for a job elsewhere?

well technically no difference to me, but seeing as all 3 of them will be going back, i suspect its going to effectively dictate pretty much everything about my life.

The kids here in town started just a few days back.  I now stick it in My head to run errands earlier in the day than when school is letting out.  I was sent pictures of My granddaughter getting on the school bus her first morning.  I could swear it didn't seem so long ago that it was My daughter, instead.  I made the occasional joke when I noticed the 'get back to school' commercials on tv and being glad that I didn't have to face school shopping.  There were just too many years that it was a bigger pain in the ass than it was fun.  I'm ok being past all of that.

To those of you going back to school, My best wishes for a successful term.

The school year effects me differently. Traffic gets heavier due to the summer schedules for parents going back to their winter schedule and people back from vacations and school buses on the run.

Three of my five classes are online. I'm doing online classes for the first time and I told my husband I was either going to go to school early and sit at the library and work or stay late. Probably go early I always think best first thing in the morning. He looked at me funny when I said that. I told him it's really difficult to work here at home when the dogs are stepping all over my stuff and you want to talk while I am in the middle of thinking about something.

I havent been a teacher in 20 years so that doesn't come into play. I do, however, live near a school so I have to make sure Im a bit more aware when I drive to and from work.

The strange thing is that it isn't the kids I have to look out for but the parents suddenly stopping in the middle of the street to let out the cargo or sitting there in the afternoon in the middle of the road chatting and blocking the road. You give em a little beep and they give you a dirty look like "WTF, don't you know this is a parking lot from 2-3 in the afternoon and not a street?"

My classes start on Thursday. I'm actually looking forward to it. I was smart enough to get the curriculum for this semester at the end of the last semester. I've been studying a little for my first two math tests this semester. I've been kinda bored the last two weeks, so this will give me something to focus on.

My effects are more secondary. Here at work, traffic picks up and I tend to avoid the downtown area more. The youts that are new to the area tend to run in packs. The drivers are.......dangerous. We've pretty much finished with the 'moving in' period and that is wonderful. Business will be picking up now that family vacations are over.

School starting means even less time with the growing grands. The 8 yo is an interesting kid. Very competitive and focused about most things whether it be school or his motocross. If he comes for the weekend to stay, there will be school homework. The 7yo I will be hearing stories like......he got kicked off the school bus. Last year both did, but the younger one tends to be a repeat offender. My eldest grand daughter starts preschool and I will be hearing stories about that now.

Mostly, it just begins the thoughts of preparing for fall and winter. Stocking up on hay and LP. Getting new tires on vehicles. Winter service stuff. Fall garden prep........stuff like that.

No kids. No grands.
Haven't taught nor taken "formal" classes since..... 1977 (where "formal" = "accredited")

What's an "on-line" class, Daddy? LOL!

Only effect is to remember to slow down in school zones.  My goal this year is to do so BEFORE I'm reminded by a ticket.  (Dang autotomatic photo ticket = $80) I have been known to change my path to avoid school zones.  Yeah!  That's the ticket!  HUH?????

// Lance scratches head, goes back to work.  LOL //

ETA:  Before 1977 was enrolled in classes or teaching classes - often both.  Lived on college campus for 8 out of ten years - including most summers.  A world unto itself.
