Arpig -> You're gay? No dress for you! (8/22/2011 3:38:39 PM)

It seems that at least one bridal shop in New Jersey has decided to fight gay marriage in a very petty way. I allow that a business owner can choose not to serve a particular customer, but I do believe that this crosses over into outright discrimination, as defined by law.

At the very least, I hope sensible people in New Jersey will patronize other bridal stores than this one.

Here's the story

What law is that...in the US?

Tolerance runs both ways.

Why should the business owner be forced to be tolerant of something her religious beliefs say are wrong without others being tolerant of her religious beliefs?

Money talks... and is typically the best cure for most types of discrimination.

And its a toss up whether this will hurt, improve or have no effect on her business.

if you are gay and you know this shop doesn't like gay people marrying, why would you want to buy a dress from them anyway? There are a ton of other shops available for someone to choose from them.

I can think of a few places that don't cater to gay people because of their religious beliefs. The gay people i know are fine with that because they are respectful of that person's religious beliefs.

I agree.  She is entitled to her beliefs and can refuse service to anyone she wishes.

And others can refuse to be a patron of her shop.

It can cut both ways.  Considering the industry, this one issue could break her.

Time will tell.

That was my point.  An economic boycott can cause a small shop many problems as well.

Odd thing...   when I watch hear anything Davids bridal- I think GAY.

Bridal gowns are expensive.... this is not a $99 sale...   their loss.

Ahh it was a Davids Bridal not some little shop.

No worries corporate will have their foot up her ass in no time.

Fine. Let them alienate a segment of their market. The bride will go buy a dress somewhere else and the store will lose business (even more now that they have some notoriety).

If they don't want to sell to gays, they don't have to. Gay money is sufficiently green elsewhere, I assure you. Mind you, they're clearly cunts and I'd quite enjoy telling them so, but we don't need a law for it.

Oh Hunkie she is just a manager, she way over stepped herself.  Corporate is not gonna just stand by while this rolls across the internet.

You will be hearing how sorry she is soon.

No, it wasn't David's Bridal.  This is from the article.

On Saturday, August 13, Alix Genter wore the happy smile of a bride-to-be who had just found the dress of her dreams. It happened while on a shopping trip to Here Comes The Bride in Somers Point, New Jersey where close family and friends were on hand to help with her decision. Satisfied with her find, Genter filled out the customer information sheet and was on her way.

ETA - Whoops.  The original.

I have a really tough time telling folks that they have to do things that go against their religious beliefs.  I do happen to think that this person has misinterpreted something that has often been quoted to justify hating homosexuals.

So, gays will boycott the place and the religious community will patronize it.  At the end of the year, the balance sheet will say how the business went.  Maybe the business owner will check her own personal balance sheet and change her mind about some things.

I do not believe its a corporate store, guys.

But the lashback has begun.

It is a perplexing-  because gays will spend alot of money on frivolous shit.    and we are in a recession.

littlewonder -> RE: You're gay? No dress for you! (8/22/2011 7:25:05 PM)

I highly doubt much will come of this. NJ has been known for being against such things. Bdsm shops and clubs have been shut down there, sex shops have been closed. NJ, especially the Somers Point area is a known conservative area.

How many bridal gowns does one need in a lifetime?

Would you feel the same way if they refused to sell to black people?

There's a visual I could have done without. :D
