Why the change? The feds said so. New rules require landfills to report waste by weight. Ada County had to install scales at a cost of about $2 million.

What’s this mean for me? Customers have to stop while entering and exiting. A new section of road was built to route customers farther up the hill to the scales; commercial trucks have their own lanes. The landfill still charges by volume — $5.50 per cubic yard for household waste ($11 minimum) and $2.75 per yard for wood waste — but customers have new automated payment options at a credit/debit card payment kiosk.
