As a European, I think it's pretty much impossible to impose a general "Europe" stance on sexuality/nudity - we are composed of many countries, each with their own national viewpoint.

In the UK we are fairly tolerant of sexuality (or at least getting there) - the ability to marry a same-sex partner is one massive step forward. But in many ways we're still somewhat prudish.

Now consider the Dutch who view sex in a much more relaxed way. Or the Finns who see nudity as nothing to be ashamed of. You would never dream of leaping naked into a mixed sauna with strangers in the UK in the same way as it's done in Finland or Sweden!

I think that the UK leans more in the same direction as the US, even if not as strongly. And while you are right, there is no generic European stance, most continental western European countries tend to be more relaxes about sexuality and nudity.

The sauna thing is absolutely normal in most of the continental countries by the way. As is naked, or at least topless sunbathing or swimming.

And I do prefer it this way.  It has nothing to do with shoving your sexuality into someone else's face, it is about a more relaxed relationship with nakedness, sexuality, and all that entails.

Oh, Pahunk? Du you have some evidence for the oh so high European STD rates compared to the US ones?

yup, that's exactly how it felt - totally non-sexual and very relaxed. [:)]

Pfft.   Far too difficult for me to generalise.  But I'll say this, this site does have a preponderance of Americans on it.  And, to me, that brings a certain heaviness to the whole matter of sex and relationships.  People frequently write with great, weighty and solemnly-considered arguments about how we should all be enjoying ourselves  - but only in absolutely the correct way, and none other.

It's weird.  Join a debate on capital punishment - and watch Americans leap on non-Americans with surprise and, frequently, scorn.  That debate is done and dusted - killing people for their crimes is self-evidently a good idea.  Barely worth talking about.  You Brits, you Aussies and Kiwis - bugger off and stop being odd, foreign and unbalanced.  But enjoying sex  and relationships the way you personally want to enjoy them?  Oh no.  That's deeply, *deeply* problematic.   We need to discuss that, and rip you to shreds in the process.  You need to be *cleansed* of your wrong ideas about enjoyment.

In short: I don't know about 'conservative' - but the 'puritanical' is still there.  And this comes from a Brit, himself from a country that's considered puritanical by most of the world.

For me, on this boards, the most obvious are the threads that touch on sex-ed for kids. Makes the cultural divide quite visible.

Being Dutch, I can reply [;)]

Over here, peepz are really relaxed in how we see en experience our sexuality. We currently do have a PM who is single, but no-one believes he's a-sexual of any kind.
But we don't make a fuzz about it.

When I look at the US, I see a lot of bigmouths shouting biblical phrases and do the direct opposite of what they are preaching. No I will not generalise, but it is what's in the papers and on the news we see.  We do have all kinds of humans, some are open and tolerant, some are very narrowminded. I like to be with the openminded people and still, even I do not shout my preferences all over.

It's all how your perspective on life is. But do not lie... Just don't tell everything.

(Hopes it makes sense)
