Status: offline 		I have been wondering this for a while comparing shows in America to shows in Europe and other countries do you think that America is to conservative?

Status: offline 		yes and personally I"d like to keep it that way but then again I'm not into voyeurism/exhibitionism/the need to scream my sexuality to the world.

America is a country that was founded on Puritan idealogies so yes it's more conservative than many countries.

Status: offline 		No. There are, however, a whole lot of very sexually conservative people there who have a lot of pull, so they have an influence on what is and isn't allowed to be presented in the media. As well, there is a lot of holdover within society and societal pressures from the Puritanical origins of much of the country. Most of the original settlers were very strict Protestant splinter groups, and their pseudo-biblical views on sin & sex has pervaded all of American culture ever since. These were people who left Europe because it was to decadent for them back then, so the "prudes" came to America. However, do keep in mind that most porn is produced in the States.

We espouse these ridiculous puritanical ideals, yet we are the most rampant in teen pregnancies, AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, huge purveyors of porn and hello....anyone noticed the HUGE hypocrisy in our right wing "preservation of marriage/family values" politicians? You know, the ones that fuck same sex partners in secret, (think famous televangelists here!)  use services like "rent a boy" and basically commit all the sins while publicly claiming to be above reproach? Yeah....it's a joke.

being sexually conservative is just as valid as being sexually liberal. neither one is better, they are just two different ways of viewing sexuality.

i have to agree with Aynee, though, in regards to the sexual hypocrisy of the majority of Americans. that has always bothered me. American has two vastly different sides. a lot of people are shamed into holding certain beliefs even if they don't really agree, or they're just plain curious, so they "act out" in secret.
it's very weird. =p

but eh -- that's life.

I will agree that Europe is more casual about nudity than the US.  But I'm not so sure that it's more liberal sexually.

Why are you asking about sexual openness based upon "shows"?  What do you mean by shows, anyway?

And Europe is not a country.  It is a continent.

Status: offline 		I can't speak much to Europe as I have spent little time there, but they do seem to be more reasonable.

Our level of hypocrisy and denial in America is insane.  A prime example is Leviticus 20 and verse 13 which is a favorite of conservatives as it says man shall not lay with man as he lays with woman.  Ironically,  verses earlier adultery is referenced with similar disdain and the execution of adulterers is called for.   Imagine if conservatives reacted in the same manner to the cheating spouses among them as they do to gays.   The bible indicates that they should in Leviticus 20.

Like Being Human you see lots of BDSM references there especially in one episode where you actually see a couple who are vampires but for all intensiive purposes BDSM life stylists. You also tend to see more homosexual couples in British TV

Status: offline 		Speaking generally I prefer the European attitude to sex. It strikes me as much healthier and less puritanical. Not for everyone, but in general I think people would be better off if they were more in touch with their sexuality in everyday life. I'm not going to say America is 'too' anything because whatever people want to do is fine with me, but I will say I think many deprive themselves of happiness.

Ironically I hear a lot overseas that they think of Americans as promiscuous. Slut heal thyself...
