Termyn8or -> Drink and don't smoke, try it (8/27/2011 2:11:06 AM)

Seventeen full days without a cigarette. Only smoked about three joints, one with other people.

What am I noticing ? I have to clear my throat alot, but I don't have to cough. It's as if some type of cilia or something is pulling shit up out of my lungs.

Now understand that I stopped. I did not quit. But then I stopped LSD, mescaline, PCP (I would grab some up if it came up though for a special occasion) and I don't even remember what else. I was never addicted to anything. I did speed, downs whatever, I just never got hooked. Well I am applying that to cigarettes. Some say smokes can be as bad as smack, I don't buy it. In fact if cigarettes are as addictive as heroin I think I might want to try some smack. It probably won't bother me at all. I know there are some physical things about it, but after I was sick last year I doubt any little bit of powder can top that.

But what is happeneing to me. I remember years ago I stopped pot, just stopped. I noticed that I was too satisfied with the status quo on pot and off pot I did something about it.

Or you could try not drinking, smoking, or doing any drugs at all. All the things you did but didn't get addicted to might explain your present circumstances.

That's good, only good things can come from giving up cigs . If you've gone 17 days without one, then the physical addiction to nicotine is broken, from here on in, it's only in your head. No problem for a man with your iron will. Congratulations.

termy i totally disagree with your statement and that is if you try one thing and then do it again you are addicted no ifs ands or buts about it whether it be drugs or food or sex or porn anything even eating or breathing you are addicted to it period end of sentence

now talk your way out of this one

DarkSteven -> RE: Drink and don't smoke, try it (8/27/2011 3:38:14 AM)

WTF?  I get this feeling of an all-you-can-ingest buffet of dozens of drugs, and you being proud that you didn't snarf down every single one of them.

None of it is good for you.  NONE of it.  Quit juggling addictions and choosing one over the other.  Just fucking quit.  All of them.

you can deny it all you want. You are an addict....period.

You aren't addicted to one and not another. You simply are an addict.

You talk about being in control of your life but nothing could be further from the truth.

It is great that you stopped smoking.  My son did the throat clearing thing for a while after he stopped smoking.  He was also convinced he had bronchitis or pneumonia or something and would not believe me when I told him it was just his lungs self-cleaning.

I hope you stop smoking for a very long time.

Smokes are sneaky fuckers.  I quit for five months, gained 20 lbs, and then fell back into the habit.  Call them coffin nails, tell me they are going to kill me, whatever you've got, they keep my strangling hand busy, and that is frequently important, even if I have mellowed considerably with age.

Some things are easier to quit than others.  I just ran out of a few additives that used to live in my medicine cabinet, and wouldn't know where to get more now if I went looking.  Probably for the best, really, except for the mushrooms.  I buy legal pot at the store, and a little bottle lasts me.  I might smoke in a month what I used to go through in an afternoon.  I know I don't have any problems with opiates, for the simple reason that there is a decent selection behind my bathroom mirror, and the bottles are expired, long before I use them up.  The dust in the liquor cabinet tells the same story, even if the corner store carries my cider, just for me.

I think it's important not to view addiction through an on/off paradigm.  There are degrees, and layers, and compromises with the inner demons to achieve balance.  Self awareness is a lot more useful than denial.

WTF are you people talking about ? Did I somehow imply that I am doing drugs ? I had one scrip of antibiotics last year around the time of my eye operation. That's fucking it. I did some coke about two years ago, meth about five years ago and nothing else. Sorry if I gave y'all the wrong impression here.

About the past, yes I did everything except heroin and shrooms. That was twenty fucking years ago. Some addict, I don't even take aspirin. I don't like that processed shit. As far as I am concerned weed is the way to go.

So on Friday night I decide to have a few beers, and mention that nothing goes better with a beer than a cigarette and all the sudden I'm a frothing at the mouth addict begging in the street and kidnapping people's kittens to feed my habit ?

I used to think people are nuts, now I'm sure of it.

Jesus, so much judgment from a society made up almost entirely of users of addictive substances (How's that caffeine treating you guys?). Lighten up.

~~two snuck in whist I was typoing....

"Smokes are sneaky fuckers.  I quit for five months, gained 20 lbs"

I heard that. Thing is I broke the oral addiction a few years ago. I won't let food fill the "void". I had enough fucking trouble getting to an acceptable weight that I am not going to blow it. In fact even before seventeen days ago I was gaining, it's time to put a stop to that.

"My son did the throat clearing thing for a while after he stopped smoking."

Yeah, it actually sounds worse than the coughing. And I'm not going to take any of these elixirs and shit, I've been through that with my allergies a long time ago. I had every damn thing they had at the drugstore and none of it worked. I stopped all of it and learned to desensitize myself.

Anybody in here thinks I'm some kind of addict, give up sweeteners. Yes sugar, but I mean all the substitutes as well. All of it. I triple dare you. In fact I'll bet money that you can't.

Hey I think it's awesome that you stopped smoking.  It is HARD to stop smoking - cigarettes are so addicting.  I never like when people call smoking a "habit" - it's not a habit, it's a very difficult addiction.

It's great you are noticing changes in your body since you stopped smoking.  Pretty soon food will taste more vibrant, too.

Congrats on quitting smoking.

BTW you're wrong about heroin being easier to quit than cigarettes. Not for the entire population, but for about 20% of smokers this is true. And since I've babysat a couple of people quitting heroin who weren't able to stay off of tobacco, I believe the studies.

I know what you mean about the cigarettes going good with a cold beer thing.  I quit smoking three times.  The first time was easy.  I had a bad cold and the cigarettes tasted like shit, so I just quit...cold turkey.  The only problem I had was when I would go to a bar for a beer.  Then the craving for a cigarette was almost unbearable.  One night some drunk guy left the bar and left his pack of cigarettes on the counter...and they were my brand!  It was just about the worst temptation of my life to grab that pack and start puffing away.  But I made it.

After my divorce I started smoking again.  That time to quit I went to a hypnotist.  That worked great...for about 4 months.  By that time I had stopped drinking beer, or any alcohol, but all of a sudden it was like there was a giant magnet at every convenience store I passed that tried to draw me in to buy a pack, which I eventually did, and started smoking again.

Last time I quit was in '98.  I used a combination of "the patch" and my own stop smoking program to wean myself from the cigarettes.  It also helped that I was dating a non-smoker that was a very energetic, out-doorsy kind of woman that liked to hike, ride bicycles, etc.  I'll admit that there have been times since then that I considered starting again...but then I look at the cost of cigarettes now and decide to not even think of going there.

Unfortunately I think I've met my match.  It isn't cigarettes, drink, or drugs.   It's food.  I've tried various diets, exercise routines, hypnosis, etc....all to no avail.  At least I've managed to stop gaining weight.  I just can't manage to lose it.

"Opiates ,  WILL DESTROY YOU ! "

I forgot to mention Opium. It smells great and if you find any that's really good it is quite enjoyable, relaxing and stuff. But in a way it's like weed on steroids. ( does that make any fucking sense at all ? ) Alot of people quit weed because it makes them paranoid. I got over that by the time I was 20, actually before that.

When I was about 25 I stopped smoking weed, my life wasn't moving fast enough and I found it a bit too sedative. I found myself satisfied with things which normally would be unsatisfactory to me. I had high standards back then. I was greedy as a motherfucker and knew how to use it.

I have almost no standards now, it might be age or who knows. I don't think that's a bad thing really. Standards cause stress. The world is fucked up, and if I had standards which it does not meet be the way, just what the fuck would I do about it ? I can't change millions of people, all I can change is myself. And after careful observation I am starting to think that really, I AM alright, the world's allwrong.

See I didn't stop for my health. I didn't stop because of money. My health is just fine, they said I MIGHT have mild COPD, which to me means don't breathe so good. Bunch of bullshit. Fukum. I didn't stop because of money because I was getting my smokes tax free. Really, good filter cigarettes for about $2 a pack. So it wasn't money.

In fact I don't even know why I stopped really. But the thing is if I start again I am not going to consider it a failure or anything, because stopping is not really a success. Just one day I was in a bad mood and said fukit, I don't smoke.

Was pretty cool the other day at work, the new kid wanted to bum a cig, so I told him.

More later, the neighbors have a fire going (illegal of course) so I have to stop by and say hi. Actually I thought the garage nextdoor was burning down. I guess I should put my shoes on.
