Pretty much my thoughts exactly Firm.  We all respond to those we are around, other people bring out different traits in each of us.  I personally believe that both dominant and submissive behaviors are learned, some of us learn them very early in life and others much later.  It appears that the men in Puella's life are learning a thing or two about dominant behavior, they're changing and adapting to a difference in their environment and that change is in response to Puella's own behavior.  That's not to say they'll become Dominants in the lifestyle sense, just that they are learning some dominant behaviors.  What's interesting about the dynamic is how it does apply to the lifestyle.

That is, a submissive who does her best at being a Submissive or Slave, may find that their dominant partner begins showing more domianant behaviors as a Dominant or Master.  And the reverse is also true, a dominant who does a better job of being a Dominant or Master, will likely inspire more submissive behavior from a Submissive or Slave.

(Note:  I used caps in that last paragraph very specifically to indicate the difference between using some words as adjectives to describe a characteristic; and some words as nouns to describe a role or person.)

Thank you for the post, Padriag.

It is an interesting idea that even if it is not something you choose to live by.. you can very much be influenced by the sort of 'primal' within and learn to incorporate them into your life in a way which is acceptable to you.

Thanks to everyone... I am really enjoying the ideas from this thread.

Puella:

I agree with the person who suggested that perhaps your own behaviors and attitude are what is causing the effect that you have noticed in your boss and other men in your life.  I wanted to add to that, the fact that you were recently released may be what is driving you to draw it from others, as a way of securing a dose of what you most likely miss very much at this point.  Just a thought, though I do not know your personal situation.
In my own experience I have found that some how, some way, our minds work in such a way that we manage to always get enough of what we need to sustain us.  If we need or want to feel helpful, submissive, subservient (or whatever),  and are not owned, sometimes we do so with those who are not necessarily lovers.   It is at those times that we sometimes allow the submission to surface with those we never imagined sharing it with, and it sometimes takes a form that is new and unfamiliar to us.
I can remember about 20 years ago having a similar relationship with a boss.  He was so kind and so easy going and I can recall feeling rather submissive to him, mostly because he was such a nice person and not at all demanding of me.  The less demanding he was, the more I gave.  And in time, he began to exude a certain dominance that just flowed so well with what was eminating from me.  It was such a beautiful and subtle thing that it is almost impossible for me to describe.  There was no sexual attraction between us.  It was strictly professional, yet it worked so well for us. In fact, it was before I even knew there was a word for our "types", and I don't think he had a clue either.  Its just odd how we manage to sniff out our opposite counterparts and draw from them what we need, while feeding back to them what fills them up.  I would bask in it if I were you and enjoy the harmony that you're in with those around you.   It is my belief that not all Ds relationships are sexual or even highly personal.  Sometimes it just clicks in with certain people; I have found these relationships to be the most special and the most memorable of my life.

Regards,
marie (aka collarquest)

marie,

What a thoughtful and very wise take on this OP.  Thank you for sharing.. It speaks volumes of the soul behind the words... it is very generous of you.

Thank you

Excellent post Padriag and one I agree with completely.

I want to highlight this sentence because it leads to so many downfalls.

Acting "dominant" does not mean someone IS "a dominant" or even would be a good dominant in a relationship with YOU (you being general random person who gets it into their head that they can convert someone into their "true dom").

puella -> RE: A Most Curious Phenomenon (5/22/2006 1:03:42 PM)

Great point, Lucky Albatross.. I think there is as much merit, though I think many will contest it, in not tying to turn someone into the perfect sub... but then it's probably a finer line in 'working your submissive into the best he or she can be' and trying to turn someone into an idyllic Stepford wife type?  Dunno...

Is that a peeps bunny in your icon?
