altartist -> A strange hello... (8/30/2011 7:14:20 PM)

Hello everyone.

I will be brief.

I am an artist and am walking around and across the United States. I seek interesting experiences and inspiration for my artwork.

I am not entirely familiar with the scene/lifestyle/terminology that is often used on these sorts of forums but am learning slowly.

My interest is rather voyeuristic yet I don't quite consider myself a voyeur...more an observer, daydreamer, and architect.

What I ask is that if anyone is interested in trading artwork for _________ (anything that involves my ability to keep moving (food, shelter, money, etc.) or anyting that helps me learn new dimensions of what inspires me.)

http://macqueenart.com

(click prints (for now) to find more of my work. Also, while I apologize for what some might consider rather tame artwork...trust me, there is more. (or teach me.))

So, you're asking folks to buy your artwork to support your trip?  Is that right?

altartist -> RE: A strange hello... (8/30/2011 7:25:51 PM)

Not exactly.

I am asking that people offer something...a place for me to put my tent, food, cigarettes. Whatever is a fair trade for the type and amount of work that I do (portrait, sketch, mural, etc.)

Money is a nice buffer but it isn't what I am looking for.

(editing for clarification)

The trip itself, the experiences, the inspiration, finding new work, new subjects. These are ultimately what I seek.

It is the person who says sure, I'll offer you a room for a week if you take pictures of me fucking my wife.
It is the person who says sure, I'll give you some food if you watch me garden and sketch as I tell you about the aliens in my brain.
It is the person who says sure, I'll let you set up camp on my land if you paint my house in crazy colors.

etc.

I don't care much for my existing work and it is great if someone buys something -- but it isn't really going to help me when I am 100 miles away from anywhere with just an address to my next destination -- nor do I want it to.

Thank you.

Considering that I was introducing myself, an actual welcome message is appreciated.

Welcome to the forums.

Wow, are you going to walk around and across the entire country?  What made you decide to do this, it is a mammoth undertaking.  Have you given yourself any type of time frame to complete it?  Are you writing about/documenting this?  (sorry about all of the questions, I am just fascinated by the idea)

I really like the idea of bartering as a way of enabling you to continue traveling. [:)]

I am in Cleveland currently and will be heading toward NYC next week. I have a handful of trades and jobs already lined up. If the weather seems like it will hold long enough for me to visit Boston, I will. If not then that is when I start heading south -- then eventually west.

No time frame. Actually crossing the country is not in itself a goal; however, it is something that simplifies saying what it is that I am doing and yeah, sounds cool. Needless to say, I will go from ocean to ocean and then up into Seattle.

I am documenting it in several ways. I will always two sketchbooks with me (one for me and the other for people to sing, draw in, write, etc.). Also, whenever I have opportunity to offload my images or develop my film, I will write blog entries on my website.

Questions are good...interest is good. What made me decide to do this? Well, that's a really long drawn out story but the short version is that I am sick (I have both known and unknown neurological damage to my system,) I am depressed because my "soul mate" and muse left me, I am broke and unable to be on disability because I used to run a business and the IRS is blocking me because they believe I have some secret stash of money, etc. I've recently had several friends die. There are plenty of reasons.

So. I decided either I lay curled up in a ball doing nothing or fuck it...go experience things that will make my time here more enjoyable.

Thank you for answering my questions Altartist.  [:)]

I am sure that you will have some unforgettable and maybe even life-changing experiences on this trek.  Congratulations on choosing not to passively accept everything that life has thrown at you and to instead find your own path (pun intended) towards the future

Welcome to Collarme, altartist.
While I hold no personal interest in this trade off you describe,
I do wish you happy and safe travels.
