I'm curious to see how well this works out.

I think you would be better off petitioning at the state level and with your vote on the federal level...Petitioning can not be and should not be easy...too many damn radicals and nutcases and that is exactly who will respond to that website. Butch

FR How many emails you suppose they get each day. are they categorized so they could be counted as a poll ? Get real, it ain't happening, and what's more even if they knew the goals and aims of the commoner for this country, they would simply say "Fuck you". That's their turf. If you think this is anything but a fucking class war you are more clueless than the most retarded motherfuckers in some institution somewhere. Because you don't know it. Who the fuck do you think we are ? T^T

I guess I'm old school on this. I'm all for petitions, but I believe they should be with original signed signatures and addresses connected. If I am going to ask my representative to consider my petition, or if I'm going to petition for an item to appear on a ballot, I should be willing to stand up publicly and support it. There's too much ability to hide behind the computer or manufacture identity with an online petition. God only knows the crazy-assed warrant articles that could make their way onto the ballot if people could submit their petitions without being held accountable. I'm sure they will have some sort of sign up/registration, but...as we all know....too easy to fake on the internet. I also do agree with kdsub...petition on a state or even local/town level. The effect will be greater on issues that you can really change. I think it's a nice enough idea if they want to get a feel for how people are thinking about something...but in my mind, it wouldn't be a true petition. It would be information gathering.

Its not individual emails, they intend to offer petitions (self serving, certainly) and accept petitions that have over 5000 signatures.

Online petitions are almost as old as the internet; I've signed plenty through the years. That said, I don't think it really gets us anywhere, especially not with DC. They tend to do whatever the hell they want and all of us un-wealthy suckers can just take it up the ass.

To clarify how it will work according to the site: "Anyone 13 or older can create or sign a petition on WhiteHouse.gov asking the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country." Apparently you must get 150 people agreeing with your petition before it goes on the site, at which point others will be able to view it and I imagine do a version of "liking" something on facebook. If it reaches 5000(the initial number, they leave a loophole to raise it) people in 31 days... "If a petition gathers enough support (i.e., signatures) it will be reviewed by a standing group of White House staff, routed to any other appropriate offices and generate an official, on-the-record response."

When I call my congressman and senators offices I don't "ask" them, I "tell" them what I want.

I could get 5,000 people to "sign" a petition to turn the sky purple if it was done through the internet. I think that to be taken seriously, one has to act seriously. There may come a day when online petitioning is indeed the way to do that, but I don't think it's now. Anything very important is done with at least a final version on paper with original signature. I believe that the same holds true for petitions. I'm referring to a citizen's petition (around here, anyway). If a citizen's petition is submitted to the local governing body, and the signatures and addresses are verified by the supervisors of the checklist, then that petition goes on the ballot for the public to vote on. I would follow suit with any other type of petition even if serving as advisory only to our representatives. Like it or not, politicians pay attention to registered voters, not Facebook likes, despite what they may say to appease you. Show your local government reps that you, and 5,000 (or even 300, dependent on your community) other registered voters feel a certain way and you will get their attention. If we're talking about a petition just to let people know whether we like Coke better than Pepsi, then yes, I suppose it's fine. I would say that an online petition may become effective when bad publicity for ignoring such petition becomes viral on the web. This may be detrimental to a politician and so he/she may want to avoid such backlash by paying heed to the petition in the first place. But...my gut feeling is that people who sign these petitions online do so because it shows up as a link on their Facebook page, not because they really care, and they will never double check to see what the follow-on action was.

Appeasement. Tell us what's bothering you using this "petition" we've created for you. This way, you can feel like you've done something effective regarding an issue that's important to you when, really, you've done nothing at all that we even have to ultimately acknowledge with more than a passing glance by a group of staffers. And then the issue will be buried, because you will think you have done your duty.
