I have spent this weekend watching "West Wing" and reading the political news on the various wire services, including conservative and liberal outlets. After which, I have come to a few conclusions about the two political parties in the United States. There was a time in this country, be it forty or so years ago, when Republicans and Democrats could put aside differences and actually come to a compromise. Equal rights is a good example. But now, not only have the two sides become so polarized as to make compromise impossible, but the Liberals will campaign on various issues, get elected, and don't even show up for the fight. Obama campaigned on change, and since being elected, he has stayed on the safe ground and refused to back up his campaign pledge. The Liberals in congress wont even stand for the very things they profess to believe in, saying it is the republicans fault we cant get anything done. Moderates of the Republican party have campaigned, spoken and wrote agreeing with some of the things that the Democrats have championed, but as soon as they are elected, they toe the party line. Republicans and the libertarians while on some level might agree with something a democrat will propose, but see some room for improvement in the program proposed, yet instead of offering a compromise, come out against the proposal simply because it was a democrat that proposed it. FDR worked with a bipartisan congress and not only steered this country out of the depression but prepared this country for a war that many saw as inevitable. Reagan worked with both parties to get some of his programs through congress and proved that the two sides could work together. Now both sides are so far apart that compromise is impossible, and not necessary since the Democrats wont even show up for the fight. Moderates on both sides dont show up in the news anymore, but the extremists of both parties do. It is time for AMERICANS to come together and tell congress to get off its collective ass and work together for the GOOD OF THE PEOPLE not big business or some tree hugging environmental extremist group. There are people who are starving in this country who want jobs, and congress has presented no plan to the president that even comes close to changing that, and these are members of both parties. The inner cities are getting worse and education in this country sucks, and no one on Capital Hill OR the White House has even addressed this problem. States cant balance their budgets and they expect the government to balance theirs. Tax breaks have not created jobs, and companies are still shipping jobs overseas, and no one in congress seems to give a shit about the situation. All either side wants to do is play the blame game.
