"Jail, prison populations rise 2.6 percent"
http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/05/21/incarceration.rate/index.html?section=cnn_topstories

The Sentencing Project, an advocacy group, reports that the U.S. incarceration rate in 2004 was the highest in the world, at 724 per 100,000 population. Second was Russia, at 532 per 100,000.

Chaingang,.. are you advocating letting them kill each other? Many are in there for petty drug offenses and not violent crime. If you ask me we should tax the hell outta drugs and incarcerate the child molestors and rapists. Did you know we have more people in our prisons percentage wise than China? And we claim to be a free country...lol

Actually, I am against any non-common law "crimes." I favor the legalization of all kinds of sexual behavior, drugs, and gay/poly marriage. I am dead against using the legislature to legislate and attempt to guide personal moral choices.

We are one of the most controlled, surveillanced, and incarcerated peoples on the planet - you got that right!

My soap on a rope comment was the usual fear and humor approach to the appalling facts we occasionally get from the media. I just wanted to show I learned my modern media lessons well. But at these rates of incarceration you are either going to prison, in prison, or getting out of prison. You will work for Unicor for pennies on the dollar but there is no such thing as forced servitude, right?

I am stunned that you didn't suggest I was just an incarcerated nutter hammering away at his cell-block laptop!

=)

No soap on a rope for me. My problem is not being able to sleep because the clowns will eat me...

My sister will be pleased she's a prisoner guard. Job security. LOL.

The article says alot of the increase is due to Meth use, I bet we also have the highest rate of Meth and Crack use to compared to other countries. I'm all for legalized pot, but Meth, well, just be around a long time meth user, and I think your opinion will change. I've seen people go from functional to virtually brain dead, fucking for meth, skin and bones, completely unable to hold a conversation. It's a slow downward spiral but they all end up at the bottom or get off it(rarely), and generally never fully recover. Really, it's not such a bad thing they end up in jail, as I know a couple active users I'd be completely suprised if they are alive 5 years from now, or at the least filled with every form of STD imaginable from fucking for drugs. They're already permanently fried, so doubt they are even employable now. No, selling meth should be equivalent to attempted murder. It just takes five to ten years to permanently reduce your brain to the point of permanent disfunctionality.  I've seen it fuck people up permanently, and relatively fast, compared to other drugs.  Pot, well, I know people that have smoked it everyday for 30 plus years and they function fine. That's all the proof I really need.

Half the time people have it better on the inside than out, they pay for you to finish school,  you get to weight train sometimes, Incarcerations a joke with all the priviilages jailed get.

Oh man... Do I agree. Just being able to do away with the attorneys, bureaucrats, police and judges, that would normally preside and be a part of such nonsense, would make this country a much better place to be - Bet!

It would help if our politicians could grasp the concept of proactive versus reactive. Wait, may be that should state if the voters could. Politicians are only able to grasp your campaign donations.

NeedToUseYou:

This isn't precisely a disgreement, this is a tangential comment about drug use stereotypes. The fact is that there are many stereotypes that crop up around drug use. Some are true, some are not. Many of the stereotypes are created by the very fact that the drug use is illegal and therefore dangerous and expensive - when it doesn't have to be (e.g. legal cocaine would cost around $3-5 a gram for 100% pure and could be taxed like tobacco or alcohol - this is essentially true for all drugs). Some other stereotypes arise when doctors start trying to pin down what are merely correlative issues and try to attach them to a diagnosis as having causal relationships to an illness. In sum, there is a lot of political and moral bullshit you have to wade through to get the real meat of the matter. See:

"The Meth-Mouth Myth: Our latest moral panic"

meatcleaver -> RE: Solution: Soap on a Rope? (5/22/2006 3:18:50 AM)

All drugs should be legalised, if only to cut out the criminality. Then society can get to work on effective ways of use prevention and recovery. Illegal drugs just creates crime, the same way as prohibition did. Locking people up is no cure for people, prison doesn't work and has never worked. The only thing prison is good for is keeping dangerous people off the street. If people aren't dangerous they shouldn't be in prison because prison will create real criminals out of people who feel they have got a bad deal or it will break them and make them useless for returning back into wider society.

Chaingang -> RE: Solution: Soap on a Rope? (5/22/2006 3:38:27 AM)

Drug use and the business structures around it are a health issue and should be treated as one. Making drug addiction a crime instead of a health matter is obviously about as foolish as it gets.

Are we going to make diabetes a crime? Wouldn't it be one if insulin were illegal? All it takes is the stroke of a few bureaucratic pens...

Just for the record here, I have to think twice before I let even as small a thing as aspirin into my body. I'm not exactly a heavy drug user or anything like that. I just know that the whole "war on drugs" mentality has failed utterly - it failed because it was outrageously misguided even in its inception. You can't have a war against an inanimate thing, it's more of a tantrum if anything. The whole nation is just now refreshing itself from the drug tantrum that is filling up our prisons and making burdens upon society of people who could otherwise do for themselves - that's bad business. Well, unless you get a good Unicor prison labor contract. Then it's like employing death-camp inmates like you were an unrepentant Oscar Schindler.
