Here's some info I once found on the topic... first hand advice/experience -- hopefully you'll find it helpful? [:)] ========= Induced Lactation: Poster/Person #1: Herbs Taken: 9 pills Fenugreek (an Indian spice that makes your sweat smell like maple syrup) [3 capsules (580-610 mg each) 3 times a day with food] 9 pills Blessed Thistle (NOT Milk Thistle) [3 capsules (325-390 mg each) 3 times a day with food] 6 pills Marshmallow Root (make the milk thicker and higher in calorie) Start by pumping every 3-4 hours with a Hospital grade breast pump (Medela Lactina double pump - info at: http://www.medela.com). The light weight pumps available at most stores will not do the job of Induced Lactation. I got milk drops 10 days after starting the pumping/herbs routine. By 4 weeks I was getting enough to freeze an ounce a day. By the time she was born I was freezing 2-3 ounces a day. Fenugreek and Breastfeeding Fenugreek seeds contain hormone precursors that increase milk supply. Scientists do not know for sure how this happens. Some believe it is possible because breasts are modified sweat glands, and fenugreek stimulates sweat production. It has been found that fenugreek can increase a nursing mother's milk supply within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb. Once an adequate level of milk production is reached, most women can discontinue the fenugreek and maintain the milk supply with adequate breast stimulation. Many women today take fenugreek in a pill form (ground seeds placed in capsules). The pills can be found at most vitamin and nutrition stores and at many supermarkets and natural foods stores. Fenugreek can also be taken in tea form, although tea is believed to be less potent than the pills and the tea comes with a bitter taste that can be hard to stomach. Fenugreek is not right for everyone. The herb has caused aggravated asthma symptoms in some women and has lowered blood glucose levels in some women with diabetes. How Much Do I Need to Take? * 2-4 capsules, 3 times per day -- 6-12 capsules (total) per day * 1200-2400 mg, 3 times per day (3.5-7.3 grams/day) Potential Side Effects * Sweat and urine smells like maple syrup (this is common and often a sign that you have reached the right dose) * Loose stools in some women, which go away when fenugreek is discontinued * Hypoglycemia in some mothers * Can cause uterine contractions - do NOT use if you're pregnant * Diabetic mothers should use caution with fenugreek since it can cause lowering of blood glucose levels. Poster/Person #2: Yes, it does work. It had been 8 years since I had last lactated, but I wanted to do this for my Master. I took it seriously and started out with herbs. Herbs Taken: * Fenugreek * Blessed Thistle * Alpha * Goat's Rue Drank and Ate: * Mother's Milk Tea * Oatmeal at least daily Stimulated my nipples at least every 2 to 4 hours at first with either: * Pump * Manual stimulation Medication: Domperidone - typically used for acid reflux and helpful with increasing milk flow. I saw drops within a few weeks, a squirt or two after about 6 weeks and sprays after 3 months. Today it's been almost 6 months and I spray continuously and need to relieve my breast from milk at least every 4 hours or they start to hurt with fullness. It's quite the thrill to feel my nipples tingle, my breast throb, and even ache at times. I think of Master and crave for him to drink from me often. When he is not around to assist I have learn to walk outside and give my plants a spray... you should see them now! lol What to expect and what I learned from this experience... * Your breast will increase at least a cup size or even 2 if too full. * Your hips and lower body will grow a bit, with new fat storage to support your milk flow... Master calls it beautiful. * You will be hungry more often. * You will get extremely emotional, particularly at the beginning -- welcome this feeling and relax. * It places a big demand on you physically and you need to eat, drink, sleep and take care of your body so you can continue to produce lots of healthy milk or you will become drained, tired and possibly sick if you do not.
