Ummm.. McConnel made those statements prior to the speech.

Ummmm the contents of the speech were being leaked for at least a week before it was made.

And as someone who is supposed to represent all his constituents, it behooves him to at least read the bill before declaring "we need to go i a different direction". Leaked information never gives the whole picture.

As it would behoove the president to give people time to read it before demanding they pass it right away.

Lucylastic -> RE: you should pass this bill right away (9/10/2011 6:09:35 AM)

Is there any proof of it not being up on the usual website for perusal by anyone??
has someone found out that its gonna be rushed n hushed thru in the dark of night ??
or is it commentators doing the speculation and scare routine?

StrangerThan -> RE: you should pass this bill right away (9/10/2011 6:30:31 AM)

Oh, I can agree on scare routines. Democrats did that quite well in the lead up to his speech. Fact of the matter is, we have a president demanding his bill be passed right away before there's a bill to be read, which isn't much different than taking a look at what was leaked before hand and saying we need a different direction.

Remember Nancy Pelosi and the health care debacle ? We need to pass this bill so we can see whats in it...

There is a bill, but Obama hasn't sent it to Congress yet. Of course, he wouldn't send it BEFORE his speech. They will probably have it by morning. And yet, the bill the president sends them will be nothing like the bill he eventually receives for his signature. Every special interest and every caucus is going to do work to change aspects of it. The progressive caucus has already announced they are going to work to make some of the provisions stronger. And another group is totally is up-in-arms about the payroll tax cuts that will ultimately undermine social security. Tax cuts are nice, they keep money in our pockets. But they are not very stimulative. The unemployed don't need tax cuts, they need jobs--right away.

Thanks.

I usually keep up on the news but somehow I missed this.

Oh I didn't say it was just the republicans. They have quite a cheering section too. In this specific series of events though, dems were the hard chargers. 90% of which, I guarantee, is based upon Obama being seen as weak.

As for demanding it wait to be read, I can go along with that as long as you're not demanding I pass it up front. If you want to play that game, then fine. We can play it.

Lucylastic -> RE: you should pass this bill right away (9/10/2011 6:53:24 AM)

you didnt mention the repubs... at all.
oh and please point out where I demanded anything of the sort. or suggested anything of the sort.
not sure where you get that line from.
John Boehner: Most Americans Would Choose Football Over The President

“Listen, this is not a State of the Union address,” said Boehner during a news conference at the U.S. Capitol. ”The American people shouldn’t be forced to watch some politician they don’t want to listen to and frankly, most of them would rather watch a football game.”

Well, from the article you quoted:

The bill was introduced in March.

Firm

So? Obama proposed an infrastructure bank in the speech and two seperate bills are sitting in Congress and going nowhere. It is a pretty good idea and a good way to leverage federal money to get infrastructure projects going which will result in new private sector jobs being created.

Hey Lucy...

The White House is not expected to present Congress with formal legislation until the week after next, when the president outlines additional proposals to offset the cost of his tax cuts and new spending.

However....

Obama's contentions are unlikely to go unchallenged by Republicans, who have worked without letup for months to cut spending rather than increase it. But he had barely completed his remarks when Speaker John Boehner and other top House GOP leaders released their letter to him declaring "our desire to work with you to find common ground."

With unemployment at 9.1 percent, they wrote that while their own proposals may differ from Obama's "we believe your ideas merit consideration by the Congress and believe the American people expect them to be given such consideration."

The letter was far different in tone from remarks earlier in the day by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Announcing plans to begin work on the legislation as soon as possible, the Nevada Democrat offered no timetable, and urged "reasonable Republicans to resist the voices of those who would oppose this legislation — and root for our economy to fail."

They must not "continue to bow to tea party Republicans willing to do anything to hurt the president." That is hurting our economy instead, he said.

Taken together, the day's events underscored the primacy of the issue of joblessness in a country where millions have been out of work for months, true unemployment exceeds the government's measurement of 9.1 percent and the economy is barely growing.
"This has been a terrible recession," Obama said in Richmond, although by traditional guidelines, the economic downturn ended more than two years ago.

Public opinion surveys show Obama's approval sinking, but Congress' own marks are exceedingly low, and one of the major unknowns when lawmakers returned from their August vacation was whether political leaders would reach for compromise, or at least disagree more politely than they had this summer.

The president emphasized repeatedly in his speech to a joint session of Congress on Thursday night that his recommendations had been embraced in the past — and in some cases authored — by Republicans.

Could it be that they are finally going to work together on something?

Lucylastic -> RE: you should pass this bill right away (9/10/2011 10:00:12 AM)

I d like to hope so, but Im not very optimistic.
Im guessing we shall see.
wouldnt that be a nice change.
Would be good for the people hurting.
mindyou...LOL like some of our posters, I found one yesterday say..."for all this "wonderful speech by obama, unemployment offices are still full" that was the title and point of his column
this was on thursday morning"
WTF? what was he expecting to have happened?
people dreaming on unicorns and reaganomics are more than myopic and going to be very very upset. Unrealism is self inflicted tho
