Gabriel is home alone most of the day and I'm wanting to keep him entertained. When I'm home, he loves the laser light, feathers and other stuff. Please share your favorite interactive cat toy or item. If you have ideas for types of cat trees, etc., please do share them as well. Thanks much.

...and NO, another cat is not an interactive toy. lol.

Best,
dovie

Some cats REALLY like the Crazy Circle Cat toy. It is basically a hollow plastic ring with a ball inside. There are a few openings in the ring that the cat can put its paws through, but they aren't big enough for the ball to come out. Here is a Youtube video of cats playing with the toy:

When my cat Lily was alive, this would keep her entertained for hours on end. Misty and Angel aren't interested in it, unfortunately. It's relatively inexpensive, so if a cat doesn't like it, it isn't a huge investment.

Well, Dovie, I was going to suggest another cat......they are the BEST interactive toy.  My 4 keep each other company and they are all happy.  If another one is an option, you chould consider it.....in fact, I have 3 kittens that need a home as we speak!  [;)]

I have one of those little things that Mystic is talking about, I think I gave $10 for it at Wal-mart.  Mine will play with it, but not too often.  Usually, two of them will get on each side of it and bat the ball back and forth.  I also got one that had a cardboard scratching circle in the center, and the ball was in more of a trench.  PetSMart has this one, it's a bit more expensive, but mine loved it too.  KB could actually pry the ball out of the trench, and he'd knock it all over the place.  Considering that it had to be pushed back into the trench, he has some pretty strong front legs.

Actually, if you were to put up a cam, you'd probably see that your kitteh just sleeps while your gone.  They spend most of their time crashed out in comfort while you're out working hard for cat food and toys!  But leave the blinds open for him to look out of, especially if it faces the street or trees.  I keep one window blind up over the bookcase, so they can watch the world go by if they want to.

There are tons of toys out there, and of course, cats will make anything that can be knocked around their toy also.  Milk rings are a favorite w/mine.  I also got some ping pong balls for them, they are great because they roll everywhere, are light enough for them to knock against walls and they'll bounce back.  I did spend a bit of cash on a toy that had a feather on an arm connected to a spinner thing, it would go around in a random rhythm, but it took KB all of 5 seconds to figure out that if he steppd on it, the arm stopped, and he caught the feather with the least amount of energy expended....little pisser!  Their interest in that $25 investment lasted aobut a week.  {sigh}

Yeah, I would have suggested another cat, too. When one of my cats died, I brought home a cat from the SPCA. My older cat and this new cat don't get along at all - they kind of hate each other - but damned if my older cat doesn't seem more spry and energetic and younger now that she has someone new to fight with.

Agreed here, too. I read something once - someone or some group had done just that. They filmed a bunch of cats to see and report on what they actually do all day. #1 was laying in front of the window.

That looking out the window thing is what my daughter & I have always called "reading the newspaper". Even though our window just looks out on the walkway between the neighbors' & our house, da Boyz love lying there looking out the window.

When Mr. Cat got older & more lethargic, I got him a kitten. They loved each other, except for the period when the kitten was getting bigger, but still wanted to maul Mr. Cat like he did when he was little. When Mr. Cat was dying, Vinnie laid on the living room floor with him & they said their goodbyes. It was very sweet, because Vinnie didn't like any other male cats.

Y'all going to make me get him a kitten....whew lawd, my poor very small house. Do they have robot kittens? [:D]  Thanks for the tips too. Gabe is an ornery azz Siamese and needy as heck. I can't move to any room without him. As I said in another post, If I could wear him around my neck all day, he would be happy. He's a bit finicky about toys. I have tried balls, catnip, crinkle toys...arghh. Perhaps, I'll hang a bird feeder outside one of my windows to keep him entertained. If you can think of anything else, please let me know. I love this big lug.

a large paper bag left on the floor would always be irresistible to my late kitty. he would jump or crawl in it peek out then spend a while playing in it. a box that he could get in was also effective. then when i was home a laser pointer was good for fast acrobatics and lots of exercise .

BurntKitty -> RE: The Best Cat Toys (9/9/2011 5:40:28 AM)

FR

I had a cat who would fetch little balls made out of crinkled aluminum foil. Mebbe it was the scent of the food on them. I would cover a roast or the lasagna pan to prevent burning, then when I removed the foil, I balled it up & tossed it for my cat. Damned if he wouldn't chase it & bring it back in his mouth.

LaTigresse -> RE: The Best Cat Toys (9/9/2011 11:45:15 AM)

In my house, the cat seems to be the toy.

One of my dogs, the smallest one, just completely adores him. She does a flying tackle whenever she sees him and they end up rolling around on the ground in a tangle. It is quite hysterical.

The largest dog has tried, in the past, to treat him like he is a very special moving sort of stuffed animal toy........which didn't really work out too well for the cat. She is better with him now but never left unsupervised.

In the house, Quig doesn't play. He eats and sleeps. Outside he has all sorts of vermin as his toys.

GreedyTop -> RE: The Best Cat Toys (9/9/2011 11:58:58 AM)

Cashie LOVES his chirpy toy (it's roughly bird-shaped, and I got it at walmart for about 4.00). He self entertains with it (as in... I'll be asleep until he decides it's CHIRPY TIME..... *sigh*)

pull tabs from plastic jugs are a favorite, and Amos LOVES hair elastics (especially the Goody brand.. dont ask me why).

I got a rug type thing that has a backinf with a zipper so you can put catnip in... one side is sisal, the other fabric.. Cashie and Amos will tussle over who gets to drool on it first...

Viktor loves paper bags and boxes, but if left alone with them, they will be shred to itty bitty pieces all over the apartment.  [8D]

He loved the laser pointer but became totally neurotic about it.  Totally.  Like a totally different cat.  Spastic, bizarre, and out of control.  It was really weird!  So he doesn't get that anymore.  Too bad, because it was fun!

Most toys he grows super bored with.  I read somewhere (and I do this now) to keep all toys in a bin (or wherever) and rotate them around, to avoid boredom.  This idea has worked well, but there is one toy type that he loves loves loves no matter how much he plays with it.  I buy a 6-pack (I think it's six) of little "mice" (covered in rabbit fur, I think) with suede tails.  They're about an inch & a half long.  I toss one and he'll bat that little sucker around forever, and ultimately under the refrigerator, where he'll paw at it, meow at it, roll over on his back to stretch his legs as far under the fridge as he can at it....you get the idea.  I keep a bag of about 20 of them in a drawer and once a day I toss one out at him to go crazy with.  And then once a week I scoop them out from under the fridge.  [:D]

GreedyTop -> RE: The Best Cat Toys (9/9/2011 12:09:50 PM)

lol NV.. Cashie had those. I got rid of them after he gnawed one to tiny bits of hard plastic.. I was worried about him swallowing pieces of it. Oddly, the pull tabs dont get gnawed like that.

NuevaVida -> RE: The Best Cat Toys (9/9/2011 12:17:14 PM)

Heya Greedy.  There isn't any plastic in these - just felt ears and eyes, suede tails and a furry little body.  Sometimes I see a little ear lying around, and it makes me laugh.

Viktor had a chirpy bird on a spring, but managed the pull the battery out.

You know, I planted cat grass in a little bowl and kept it in the kitchen for him to graze on, and he loved it.  But out of the blue, all these little bugs started swarming around it.  What the heck?  So it's gone.  *sigh*

GreedyTop -> RE: The Best Cat Toys (9/9/2011 12:20:48 PM)

Cashie had that birdy on a string too.. took him only a few days to eviscerate it LOL

I'll have to look for the furry mice sans plastic bodies....

I grew the grass at one point.. I got tired f it when the cats INSISTED on being hand fed, one blade at a time..LOL

Aileen1968 -> RE: The Best Cat Toys (9/9/2011 4:12:50 PM)

A paper bag and a cardboard box with a hole cut out of it.
