Any investment structure is basically a Ponzi scheme, stocks are a Ponzi scheme, the more people buy them, the more they're worth.

SS isn`t a scheme.

It`s an insurance policy.

It`s not there to fund your vacations and your shore house.

It`s there in case you have some bad luck and would otherwise be on the street.

The cons proposing that folks be allowed "invest" there own SS money imagine that everyone`s a wallstreet wizz or a scary talented day-trader.Or are deluded enough to think they won`t lose their shirts in the stock market themselves.

To the cons,

What do we do with the millions of Americans who make/made bad investment choices?

Put them on the street too?

Perhaps you should do a little more research. Senators and congress persons do not pay into ss. Who knows if you are really as smart as you claim to be you might be able to find out who else is not required to pay.

Yes, the site I linked stated that there are exceptions, but those exceptions don't make it less mandatory for those of us not in those exceptions.

The change to SS would have to be part of a gazillion other changes to our fiscal policy in my ideal world that would let me opt out.

The fact that SS would look much less like a Ponzi scheme in that ideal world would just be coincidental. ;)

I hear they do now. People who worked for the railroad didn't. Not sure about now. But it certainly isn't mandatory. That's WTF I'm talking about - just because it's ssa.gov doesn't mean everything they spout is the truth. "Exceptions". If there are exceptions it isn't mandatory, period. Define the word mandatory and it's pretty clear.
