Having first hand experience with naturally curly hair, going from longer to shorter hair, AND the humidity of the Jersey shore, I'm going to recommend adding in the layers a little bit at a time and see what happens and how you like it before you really whack a lot of hair off. The weight of longer hair straightens out a LOT of the natural curl in my hair. Anytime I've cut off more than 2-3 inches, it corkscrews up like a mofo, it drives me nuts trying to style it straighter, and I end up growing it back out again. This time of year, coming into winter with the lower humidity, is a better time for a new length than going into summer humidity, learned that the hard way, too. Make sure the stylist is experienced, and that she understands the tightness of curl and texture of your hair before she starts whacking. ALWAYS go longer than you think you might want it. You can always cut more off later if you need to. With the cowlicks I have in the front, as well as the widow's peak, and the curliness, the proper length bangs for me will stretch down way past my nose when wet. It shortens way up when drying. I need bangs for my face shape and to cover that deep crevice that lives right below the hairline but in all honesty, 99% of everyone I know that went from no bangs to bangs grows the bangs back out anyway. I'd go very long ones to start out with if I were you.
