Status: offline 		I was reading an article in the news about the woman who suffocated after a Shibari double bondage.

I do not know much about Shibari, but are there not safety measures to prevent this type of thing? Someone once said, in a bondage situation, there should always be a way out incase something happened to Dom/Master while in a session (not only Shibari but any other type of bondage)

This is aside from the alcohol and drugs, which obviously will slow and skew emergency preparedness.

It would seem a safeword would be pretty hard to use if you can't even breath, much less talk.

Status: offline 		In theory you only let people tie you up, who are not impaired, and whom you trust to be able to release you quickly if something goes wrong.

Anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol is clearly not to be trusted to use good sense.


I don't have experience with tying up people in elaborate rope, but I'm sure there must be some fast means of release at least in some situations, I mean when I looked after horses, all catches, clasps and roped knots were meant to be fastened in such a way you could release the animal quickly if tangles or accidents occured, doesn't the same principle go for human beasts too?

Everything from bandage scissors to a buck knife.

Safety First, Last and Always. I'm a big fan of written safety plans and all-hands safety meetings before doing anything. Just ask yourself, "What Would OSHA Do?"

As far as the bondage thing goes, when binding two people together there must be a gravity point which is not dependent on one or the other victim. For instance if he had them bound and one fainted and they were standing both must be attached to a point above that had a quick release. That way the weight of one will not effect the pressure on the other. Also, tying the necks of two people together absolutely does not make any kind of sense. A better tie would have them bound together so that the pressure would have been on their chest or back and not the neck.

Status: offline 		Long story short. My sailing knife <yes there is such a thing> that I always carry when I'm on a boat prevented the 30 boat I was on from capsizing and tossing 4 of us into the drink. A little bit of common sense goes a long ass way to keeping yourself alive.

Status: offline 		Sailing knives are by far the best for emergency cutting of bondages.

That said, creating a bondage that quickly unravels when the "distress cord" is used is ofcourse even better.

Sure, there are safety measures and sure, they're supposed to use them, but that doesn't mean that they did. And some people get off on being able to say that they didn't use any, and most of the time nothing happens. This time something did.

Status: offline 		The article states they were all impaired with drugs and alcohol. 'Expert' in BDSM my ass. While it's everyone's job to play safely, IMO the onus is on the dominant to ensure the safety and well-being of his partners. I'm sorry for their losses but they were all dumbasses playing under the influence.

Status: offline 		A safe word can be extended to a patter of blinking ones eyes, hand / finger movement pattern, or leg / foot / toe movements. If the s/s can't speak the safe word, the should be another method thats understood between those playing.

Status: offline 		First, they were all extremely impaired. If the one who fainted, had bothered to say she felt ill, or if the top had been observant, none of this would have happened. Being tied doesn't mean gagged and you can still make sounds while gagged. Three grunts or holding a bell in your hand. Hell, just tapping out would work if the top wasn't too wasted to have noticed it. Murder, probably not. Manslaughter, certainly.

It takes 2 to tango so if you are going tie someone up. One of them should be smart enuff to know you need a escape hatch. If they haven't figured that out yet Darwin was right. Only the smart <strong> ppl survive. That is truly the way of the world. Add some drugs and booze <real brilliant move I might add> and you got yourself a accident waiting to happen.
