Aneirin -> Macbook problem- slow internet ? (9/13/2011 5:36:14 AM)

ok, I have a Macbook Pro and this thing I was so happy with, but not now, and why, because it has become a slug on the internet forcing me to fire up my old vista disaster PC to peruse the net.

But what has happened to the mac, it struggles to find sites and when it does it struggles to load images and some text.

I immediately thought virus, but I have Intego virus barrier on this thing and it reports nothing, yet the mac still crawls online, where the vista thing relatively flies in comparison, so it's not my connection.

Now searching crawling internet on macbook pros, I am finding many reports of the same thing, but although I could tweak a pc, I am clueless with a mac.

Any ideas ?

You need to clear cache and cookies on a regular basis. try that, then re boot.
I do it every 3 weeks on mine. btw - I use Safari, Gmail and yahell...

Buy an Acer Aspire with Windows 7. Surfing is lickity split!

I see you're not geting much here....... All the experts must be busy, or not know about MACs. Not that I do, but I can say this much.

Think of the last thing you did before the problem happened. That is it 99% of the time Was there a software update of any kind, or an install ? Anything ? If so can it be undone ? (this is the reason that I do not allow any automatic updates on my stuff)

Is there a restore function like in Windows ? Sometimes in Windows you can go all the way back to the day you bought it. Sometimes, however you don't want to because you'll have to reinstall some things. But if you can pick a date when it was running well, and everything was loaded that you want, that's the date to pick.

Clearing the cache and cookies does absolutely nothing usually. It depends on where you've been. If a cookie is sending your browser somewhere in the background and that is the cause it may work. However in Windows things like this are usually in the registry. I don't know what MAC uses in lieu of a registry but it seems like there should be something.

There are probably some good MAC user's groups on Usenet but unfortunately the only way I know to get there is through Google groups. You can read all you want, but if you want to post I suggest you get a brand new email address just for that. One because of possible spam, another reason is that some members will actually respond via email instead of to the group.

Except when it isn't, right? :)

Seriously, though… there's not a whole lot to go on in the OP. The more information you can provide about your system and what you've tried to diagnose a problem, the better help you'll generally be able to get. A quick list of possible things to try if you haven't:
  • Try multiple browsers. Does the slowdown affect all browsers on the machine? Are other, non-browser internet-dependent tasks slowed? If it only affects one browser, simply resetting or reinstalling that browser may help.
  • Restart the system.
  • What sort of network activity does Activity Monitor show?
  • Try the guest account. Is the slowdown still persistent?
  • Use Network Utility and ping a server like www.apple.com that you know is up. Are you losing any packets? What are the ping times like?
  • Set different DNS servers for the network interface you're using. Use something like Google Public DNS.
  • How are you connecting to the internet? Try connecting in other ways (e.g. switching from wireless to wired, trying a different wireless network). Is the slowdown the same across all connection methods?
  • Cycle the power on your router.
  • Restart in Safe Mode. Are there still problems with browsing?
  • If you have another bootable drive handy, try starting up from that. Any difference?
  • Restore from Time Machine. You do have a backup, right?

I don't know about that, I haven't seen her machine be anything but FAST!

If you click on the link he provided, you'll see that she made a post herself about her computer hanging up due to problems with the scroller at the top of Collarchat.

Ah, the confusion is now clear. That's not her computer. That's the bedroom one.

<sorry, I didn't even notice there was a link>

Do you get the spinning rainbow ball a lot? You can try cleaning out your cache and then resetting Safari. Both of these are under the Safari tab at the top left next to the apple icon. Hope this helps some! :)

Yeah, I get that rainbow spinning ball a lot, it has come to annoy the hell out of me, as this signifies the mac not performing.

Now one thing did occur to me, is I have an awful lot of imagery on this thing, RAW files, I kicked them to DVD and that speeded things up a bit, as the installed software on this machine I know takes up about half of the resources, Mac speech dictate, Adobe design standard; PS CS5, Bridge and Illustrator, MS Office, Inspiration, Intego, Claro, Sonority and Iris pen, so I guess with that lot, the machine is not as free running as it could be, but my issue was really internet, where the browsers struggle to load pages.

Firefox sucks, it did on the vista disaster, so I went Mozilla Camino then reverted back to Safari, where resetting and cleaning out the cache appeared to speed it up a bit, but if thinking back, my problems really started with an auto update of Safari of which other users on the net seem to be complaining about, so am not alone in this thought.

But curiously, select private browsing and the old speed is back with far fewer hang ups.

So what's going on here, why does selecting private browsing speed life on the net up ?

"But curiously, select private browsing and the old speed is back with far fewer hang ups."

What the fuck is the alternative , public browsing ?

I must know more, I need a MAC just to play with, to find out this shit. Wish me money because they are not cheap.

Here.

Aneirin -> RE: Macbook problem- slow internet ? (9/14/2011 7:19:36 PM)

Exactly !

I never selected private browsing before, but recently I did and was rewarded with speed.

I guess being private, it doesn't remember anything.

But perhaps that could be the key to my problem, the not remembering stuff, nothing to block up blockable up areas of the architecture ?

Macs are weird, weird when one has spent the last five years learning pc's, but they are intuitive though, much of what I have learned about this thing has been by poking around, not using any form of tuition.

But I do like where everything I have software for and the associated hardware just works, does it's job with no fucking around from time to time as with all the pc's I have had.

They are of course also very stylish, this macbook pro is the unibody design, it machined out of a lump of aluminium.

FYI ?

"I never selected private browsing before, but recently I did and was rewarded with speed.  "

Sorry, I resent that attitude. You were rewarded by somethng you bought ? I got no beef with you but I say that because I want you to take that attitude. Your device rewarded you ?

Think about that Man.
