This is in Random Stupidity because it's kind of dumb. But I still want to know. When one person goes out of their way to post inflamatory and obviously ill thought out posts, why do other people answer and try to make them think reasonably? I have this picture of this guy jacking off to every answer, especially the ones that disagree with him. I'm boycotting threads by ones I think just want attention. (not necessarily the dumbest ones I see) If everyone did that, some people would either have to grow up or get over themselves.

I totally agree with you & have advocated this behavior for years. So few listen to me, though. But they like you better, Chrissie. I'm sure they'll listen to you. [8D] I do think that the posts that people make trying to get the OP to think & act reasonably is something those posters just need to do. It does something for them. So I guess that it's a symbiotic relationship.

Waves to Blushie. You're right, we shouldn't respond. But sometimes we just have a knee jerk response. Also if the person's new, we frequently give them the benefit of the doubt. Now after a while, like Kevin reappearing, most responses are just to make fun of him, not done in seriousness but to amuse each other with our witticisms.

And I guess it depends on what they post. If it's just something stupid then I might post some sort of joke reply, but usually I leave the merely stupid to Hanners. If they post some sort of attack on me or mine I will rebut it, if they post some dumb theory I will counter it to disprove it. We have come up with a new tactic for dealing with the complete idiot asshole posts, we shall see how it works.

Yeah, I'm pretty much talking about people who time after time post silly crap just for a reaction, not for dumb first timers. (just to clarify) Plus I know we ALL post stupid stuff sometimes. I mean...even Honey Master...oops...uhm...I mean other people who are really smart and stuff... I just don't even feel the need to answer them. I picture them in my mind wanking off to the humiliating answers he's getting...

Actually, no. If someone chooses to believe I'm talking about them, they should maybe check their posts, but I am not adding to their stupid posts with this one. (which I did put in random stupidity right away!) g

The best way to make someone irrelevant is to simply not acknowledge their existence. As I said, by making this topic you have shown that they are provoking a reaction out of you. Not only out of you, but now you have allowed other people to come in and share their views and continue to make the topic all about them.

I sometimes respond just to get a rise, yes, I can be a boglin feeder. I try so hard not to, but at times my fingers just fly faster than my brain does and there it is. [8\|] But now I try to take the time to think before I send, and often end up not sending it. The attacks have been getting a lot more personal and vicious, that I won't participate in at all.

I used to try to do that - to try to engage in a reasonable dialogue about whatever it is being discussed. I no longer do. If I think someone's continually being dumb, I move on (you're right - all of us say something dumb at some point or other). If I think someone's being an ass, I move on. I'm not opposed to disagreements; I actually learn about myself from them. But when it's clear the person's agenda is too far removed from my own, I'm not interested in trying to reason, or in poking at them, or in arguing.

There are some good reasons. My personal entertainment being one of those. I do happen to enjoy ripping the heck out of troll-goblins. I'm not going to apologize for laughing Myself silly when it happens, either. At the same time, there's also an underlying message. Know the person you are dealing with. If someone isn't right in the head, by their own admission, I think it's a good reminder that those folks are out there. On the message boards, at our munches, advertising themselves as having successfully "trained" people in the lifestyle for years, and all of the other bunk that's been coming up of late. If I waste a few keystrokes in the process, since I'm already being entertained, I'm willing to do that.
