Well, right now it's in the 50s and windy/ cold....I can only imagine what is in store for us here in  Michigan...as a former Jersey girl, I am so not use to these winters but hell, people know how to deal with snow here more than anywhere else....so that is something positive...

I've learned from experience that most of the time, a cooler summer means a colder winter and a hot summer leads to a mild winter. This summer, the weather has shown both extremes. The central US has gone from scorching hot temps to lows in the 40's when autumn doesn't begin for another week. Who else thinks it's cooling off faster than normal this year? Do you think the upcoming winter will be harsh or mild?

DBG, yeah, that's happening here in Myrtle Beach too.
I went to one of the 24/7 supermarkets here at 0200 this morning in shorts and a t-shirt and it was in the 40's!
You can definately tell that summer's over.
The summers here can have temps of 100-110 and a heat index of 100-120! But, that's pretty much in July with overlaps in June and August.

I absofrikkenlutely HATE winter.  I have to deal with S.A.D. and my entire family notices the difference in me right away.  I've also managed to move myself right next to the St-Lawrence Seaway and the snowfall here is usually blizzards, snowstorms, ice storms and whatever else Mother Nature can throw this way.  I'd love to hibernate from November to the end of April, but alas, can't do that.  Didn't take long for the weather to go from the 100's we've had most of the summer to the upper 30's-lower 40's we're having now.  But at least it's still bright and sunny, so I'm still doing fairly well for me.

I grew up in the south, and had never heard of S.A.D.  By the second winter I lived in Michigan, I thought I'd tripped a mental breaker because I couldn't stop crying and could barely get  out of bed.  I was so relieved when I learned there was a cause other than the fact my brain had flown south for winter without me.

Yeah do that... cause if you don't end up heating with them we could go up on a hill above AZBM's trailer (excuse me, mobile home) and bomb the fucking thing for a few hours

I've never had the chance to try the daylight lamps, and they're way out of my price range.  Luckily, there's a drop-in center in town where they have 3 of them.  Hoping I get a chance to make use of them this winter and see if they work or not.  If not, well, it's gonna be a hell of a long winter here lemme tellya!

you can now buy full spectrum lightbulbs in the stores that seem to run around $10 that are said to help with S.A.D. I plan on buying some this winter to try since I suffer from S.A.D. along with my depression.

to JerseyKrissi.....there is no such thing as a former jersey girl.....we are one for life no matter where we may live.

to tiggerspoohbear.....definitely look for the bulbs littlewonder posted about .....they are wonderful....i had first bought them because my mom had macular degeneration and needed bright lights....she kept talking about how much better it was for her to see when she was out in the sunlight....so, no pun intended, the light bulb went off over my head and we tried those and they were great...and i do not think i suffered from S.A.D but boy did i feel more chipper when i would go upstairs to mom's rooms. They are not that expensive...at least not as expensive as the lamps and i do believe they may help you....best of luck!

Thanks.  I'll have to look for them.  Probably at Home Depot or one of the big supply stores in town.  I sure could use it.  The only good thing to moving here is that at least people know how to drive in the damned snow, they're used to it.  2" of snow in Toronto and you might as well shut down the 401, they're a downright scary bunch to have swerving, slipping and doing donuts because they're not smart enough to slow down.

all I know is that here in the UK if we have 2 inches of snow the whole bloody country will grind to a halt

Indeed

Now, I am unsure over here...though overall I think it will be ok...most of the time it is an ok winter, sometimes too mild and once in while we also get knee deep snow, but thats then it...and on the plus side, our footpathes are cleared, so no fucking slippery roads here to walk along as I experienced it in the UK

Now...considering how much it rained over here this summer...maybe it will mean that it will be snowing with no end

After 49 winters in Iowa, I have learned that no matter what, it will be cold, too dark and gloomy, we will get some snow, some ice, and by the end of January I will be a cranky motherfucker.

Iowa SUCKS in the winter. We were there last February and I had to buy a hat. I hate hats. But it was that damned cold that I bought it and wore it happily. (Gutenberg, IA, twenty-two below zero IN THE SUN!)

Home sweet home!

People that come here in the winter cannot believe how miserably hot and humid it gets in the summer.....until they come here in August.

RE: the SAD. Something that has HUGELY helped me have a much better attitude during winter is my Y membership. Just walking in and smelling the pool puts a smile on my face. Getting hot and sweaty on an eliptical then hitting the sauna or hot tub totally makes it more bearable. Please, check with your local Y. I know they pro-rate the fees for income. My daughter was able to join her local Y for free and goes to swim. They also have child care while she swims.

There is just something about the scent of the pool, the bright lights, just everything, that totally changes my mood.
