WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration ignored repeated warnings about a clean-energy loan program that has become an embarrassment for the White House amid the collapse of a California solar energy company that received more than $500 million in federal loans.

At least three reports by federal watchdogs over the past two years warned that the Energy Department had not fully developed the controls needed to manage the multibillion-dollar loan program that provided more than $528 million to Solyndra Inc., a now-bankrupt solar panel manufacturer.

The Silicon Valley company was the first renewable-energy company to receive a loan guarantee under the 2009 stimulus law, and the Obama administration frequently touted Solyndra as a model for its clean energy program. President Barack Obama visited the company's Fremont, Calif., headquarters last year.

Even as Obama praised the company's plans to hire more than 1,000 workers, warning signs were being sent from within the government and from outside analysts who questioned Solyndra's viability as a "going concern."

Emails obtained by The Associated Press show that a White House official dismissed reports about Solyndra's gloomy future. An email from Greg Nelson, a White House official who had been involved in the planning of Obama's May 2010 trip to Solyndra's headquarters, to a Solyndra executive downplayed a July 2010 news story in a trade publication that criticized the company's financial health.

"Seems B.S.," Nelson wrote.

Which also means the cons did, too.

The bush arranged deal went down before the president took office.

You must feel all tore up about that........[8|]

"The White House will have some explaining to do Wednesday when the Energy and Commerce Committee demands to know how half a billion taxpayer dollars were squandered.

But the explanation is likely to include a history lesson that goes back to the GOP.

That's because Solyndra first came into the picture during the Bush administration, when it was one of just 16 firms found eligible for several billion dollars available in the Energy Policy Act of 2005's guaranteed loan program.

And more, the Energy Policy Act, which the Bush administration used to promote Solyndra, was passed by the same committee under the leadership of Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas).

One Democrat noted that while the GOP has been having a field day with the involvement of an Obama bundler, another major investor in a similar position is Madrone Capital Partners, run by Walmart's Walton family -- major GOP donors.

Further, the Bush administration nearly pushed a guaranteed loan through for Solyndra the day before Obama took office, ThinkProgress reported."

They were involved.

Done.

How many warnings,no wait,.....how many years of warnings, did bush ignore Bernnie Madoff`s malfeasance?

We`ll match the million in this case to the billions lost in the bush case.

K?

The Bush administration decided not to fund Solyndra in Dec 2008 because of its financial condition, it came back less than 4 months later under Obama.

Whether or not it was corruption or inattention, its a huge political liability. The ads of Obama and Biteme touting Solyndra, with an overlay of $500 million being flushed down the toilet, will be all over TV next fall.

Think about this, the AP normally leans heavily to the left

Today there are two seperate AP articles with the words "ignored" in them, calling the Obama administration to task

AP Exclusive: Long-term care plan alarms ignored

Obama admin. ignored warnings about Solyndra

I do not like that Reagan got rid of the solar panels on the White House.

Bad idea!

Sanity, this guy still tries to claim that loony Laughner who took up the Daily Kos challenge to "target" Gabby Giffords was a Tea Party guy.

Facts and reality are not allowed in his hateful little view of the world.  It isn't spin, or playing the grand game.  It isn't poking with sharp sticks for amusement.  He really believes all this shit he spews.

You do realize that we have to pay that electric bill.  It does not grow on trees.

No, it doesnt grow on trees - you dig coal from the ground.

samboct -> RE: AP: Obama admin. ignored warnings about Solyndra (9/16/2011 5:38:52 AM)

Nope.

It is the Bush admin's fault- like the economic crisis we've been facing today, for setting us up so that we have massive and increasing debt, offshored our mfg to China, and allowed the Chinese to load up on our debt so that they can crash the economy if they choose. At this point, we can't call the Chinese on the dumping they're doing in the solar industry. Five of the top 10 solar companies today are Chinese, only one is US and another is German. In 2000, when Bush took office- how many solar mfg in the top 10 were in China? See the NPR piece- link below. It takes time to build a company-losing our competitiveness in this industry didn't happen on Obama's watch- it happened on Bush's who was busy declaring orange alerts and looking for terrorist bombs in big tittied airline passengers.

Obama's administration tried a Hail Mary pass with Solyndra- and it failed. In case anyone else hasn't notice, two other US PV firms, Evergreen and Spectrawatt, both without major loans from the gov't also failed in recent months. Anybody think this is unrelated to the differential pricing that the Chinese use? Cells for their own market (which is now larger than the US and Europe combined btw, China's close to 16GW installed, US at 5GW installed, Europe at 10GW) are sold at a price that's 15% higher than cells that are exported- in other words, the gov't of China has been subsidizing cheap exports to gain market share- and it's worked.

Wake up and smell the coffee people. There's a villain in this piece and it ain't Obama, he's just the guy left holding the bag full of manure. The AP didn't do a good job of digging, or people are just afraid to really tell the truth about how China is clobbering our economy.

OK, here's an NPR interview putting a number on the subsidies the Chinese have handed out to their industry: $30B.

Solyndra may just be the tip of the iceberg. A new book by Ron Suskind, “Confidence Men: Wall Street, Washington and the Education of a President,” contends that some economic decisions by President Obama, including one to consider an overhaul of Citigroup, were met with indifference or ignored by top administration officials among other things. The  book claims that President Obama’s response to the economic crisis was hampered by a White House economic staff plagued by internal rivalries, a domineering chief adviser and a Treasury secretary who dragged his feet on enforcing decisions with which he disagreed.

Adding to that, criticism that he turned over the stimulus money to house democrats and that even some democrats are now speaking out against the jobs bill make it seem like Obama's economic blunders are coming to light all at once and just keep adding up.

  Obama's political future looks grim.

samboct -> RE: AP: Obama admin. ignored warnings about Solyndra (9/16/2011 7:48:49 AM)

I'd say that both the US's economic future and Obama's political future aren't looking particularly cheery.....

There's a lot of armchair quarterbacking going on- I remember how grim things looked in 2008. Its to Obama's credit that we didn't crash then, but there's been a lot of flailing going on. Much of this is because the Democrats haven't pushed when they had the political advantage and have let the Republican spin grossly distort events- such as the stimulus didn't work. It did- things didn't get worse. Unfortunately, it wasn't big enough for things to really get better.

Re my post #15- I put in the numbers for wind turbine, rather than solar. Solar global installations in 2010 were about 18GW total.- thus showing that wind power is more established, since overall wind power installations I think were greater than 2x.

My bad.
