It's common in government service to have a rules requiring prior approval of any outside employment, in this case, employment where more than $1,000 is earned. This prosecutor certainly knew the rule and chose to violate it, irrespective of the type of work involved. She took the risk, here. Having said that, I think it's unreasonable for the State Attorney's office to not tell her why she was suspended. By the way, ethically, laywers are supposed to avoid "even the appearance of impropriety." I am not saying that the type of work involved did not factor into this. Just that it may have been enough for the AG to suspend her on her failure to comply with the rule that she must obtain prior approval before earning more than $1,000 in outside work, alone. If she had sought prior approval of the work involved, the outcome of the AG's decision on that would have been very interesting.
