I need some suggestions: My mom quilts and makes some very beautiful quilts. My dad takes pictures of all the quilts and my mom keeps samples of the materials.

I want to put together a scrapbook for my mom that showcases all her quilts and would like to know 1) if anyone scrapbooks, what is the best type of book to get that a) allow bulk in the pages as i will be adding the samples she has kept to each quilts page, b) allow additional pages to be added in the future. Also, 2) if you scrapbook are there any softwares you really like. It will be something like a coffeetable book.

If it wasn't for the material, i could actually make it into a coffeetable book, but i want her to be able to add the samples of the materials to each page.

Each page will consist of 1 or 2 pictures of a particular quilt. The date and who she made the quilt for, and why (if there is a reason) and the samples of the material and a copy of the diagram she may have used or drawing she took it from.

Also, if anyone quilts and thinks i am missing something to add to it, please let me know. I will check with some quilt shops to see what they say. I want to do this as a surprise but do you think i should talk to my mom to see what she would want in the book?

Just thought i would throw this out there to see what ideas come back.

I've done a little scrapbooking, not a lot, and I don't really have any good suggestions for you, just wanted to say that I think it's a really great and thoughtful idea. I think it would be a wonderful surprise, rather than talk about it before hand. You can always add pages later if she thinks something else should be added.

I hope you'll share some photos when you get some pages finished

Well angel I am kinda old fashioned and......... wait did you say your Mom ?

Back to school sales are on, K.I.S.S.. A three ring binder, paper, one of those thingies that cuts the holes, those little cloth reinforcers, a printer and a laminating machine. That way she can rearrainge things when she wants, each page can be layed out whichever way, there are a bunch of options.

If she is computer literate.... even better.

If not it's not so bad, still with the paper or whatever. But alot of the ones that use the bend over tabs to stay together wear out each and every time you add something. Those are more suited for photo albums of some sort(s). But then they can be used here as well, for certain pages, the exceptional, the milestones, certain ones could be collated into a separate book.

Really, you can probably get by without the laminating machine. You can go to a copy place with a scanned image on a thumbdrive and have it printed on a glossy paper or something, things like that. It depends how long you want to keep it.

I am assuming forever.

Layout is in the eye of the layouter. I'd probably go with pictures on the front and the diagram and sample swatches on the back of the page. If more than one page per project is desired I would make the additional one(s) flip up on the reverse, rather than the obverse side, but that is my own preference and reasoning.

But yup, I think the old three ring binder would be nice. Later it could be archived like I said but then that happens when you,,,,,,err she is good and ready.

I dont scrapbook (although, I SHOULD.. it would minimize a bunch of random crap I tend to keep..LOL), but I agree with Termy... 3 ring binders, etc. since those binders come in different width (heres one from Staples

personally, i have the last journal. it's a valuable thing you're doing for your mum, as many quilters give away their art to others, and don't always remember to take pictures, make notes, document who gets it, what inspired it, etc etc.

i tend to load a lot of symbolism in quilts. certain patches for certain people, certain quilting patterns for particular meanings (my latest quilt i embroidered bumblebees on for prosperity and luck, and honeycomb to continue the theme, as the quilted background). those things are very easy to lose the meanings for if they're not noted. one thing i'd suggest, is to leave spaces for your mum to journal her own thoughts as she was quilting.

another example, my very first, "for me" quilt, i started when i was married. it was made with pansy fabrics, and particularly blue and purple pansies. pansy is french for 'pense', thinking of you, and the blue and purple pansies symbolic of faithfulness. i had just finished assembling the top when my husband decided to leave me. i put the quilt away for years til i was able to finish it. my ex hates paisley, and paisley is symbolic of the tree of life, new starts - so i quilted a stylised paisley pattern in the 'blank' blocks. the back was a length of material covered with dragonflies. dragonflies have always meant freedom and new starts to me, so the whole thing went from a loving homage to my marriage, to an ironic commentary on my blindness, to a symbol of freedom and new beginnings, and my most cherished quilt.

that kind of back story can't be captured in an album put together by someone else, hence a plea to leave room for personal commentary.

ETA: two more things: you can scan the samples of material in to make it more of a flat coffeetable book. also, REALLY good idea to put the designer and name of the fabric somewhere on the page, so if in the future someone a) needs material to mend a particular quilt or b) she wants to go back and make another quilt and would LOVE to remember who the designer was.... she's got a record. don't ask me how i know

There are also albums you can buy with screws so you can actually expand the spine as the album gets bulky (in craft shops)

Lumapix Fotofusion Enhanced looks like great scrapbooking software.
I use the extreme version for album designs and if the enhanced is anything like what you can do with the extreme then you can't go wrong.

Wow, thanks everyone.

I've actually made a scrapbook for my dad as he builds things, but it was my first project so very (first) but it turned out really nice. He loves it.

Yes, i was considering a screw book so she can add pages, I really don't want to go with a three ring binder as that is exactly what it will look like. But thanks for the suggestion, Termy. She has it all on the computer, except for the scraps, so she is able to make her own if she wants to branch out into special ones. My dad is sending me a disk of what he has on the computer, she will have to add the scraps later because i can't take those without her realizing they are missing. I think i am also going to make a digital scrap book for her also as people are always asking to see the quilts she has made this way she can show them that way. The digital is easier for me to do as i am more creative with designing websites than the hard copy lol.

KMsAngel, wow some great advice. I don't think my mom is into the meaning of things as much as she is to the creating visually of things and she is more literal then symbolic. But i don't know she has never really said why she chooses what she does, mostly it's she gets a picture in her head and decides she wants to do it lol. I believe she does keep the name of the materials and the design which should have the designers name, but she does a lot on her own -- she has this computer designer thing she creates designs on.

Aileen, thanks, i will check it out.

I appreciate all the advise, my mom is a perfectionist and i do believe she wants this, but my weariness comes in that she is one who says she loves it and thank you etc but then has no problem indicating how she would do things differently or she will change something. Not that i mind, but sometimes its frustrating sometimes. So i have decided just to do this and if she wants it different, she can make her own.

all I have to say is that scrapbooking and quilting are not verbs.
Just wait for the Olympics when I will break my television after hearing every fucking commentator say " it's a tough ask for him to medal"

My issue with scrapbooking is that i tend to want to clutter up the pages lol. Which is why i think a scrapbooking software will help me.

I am really excited about doing this quilting scrapbooking concept. I get overwelmed when i go into Michaels as they have tons of purty paper that i love. Yep, i'm a paper girl.

Jeez - i quilt, i am quilting - quilting is a verb!

and OP, its a lovely idea. The one thing i can add, is if she is saving material to possibly mend a quilt in the future, recording the manufactures name isn't going to help - a lot of fabric gets retired after a few years. Its a lot better to save the fabric itself. I would think maybe a seperate book with a photo added to a plastic envelope with the material. I was thinking something along the lines of the plastic envelopes you can put in ring binders to hold pencils and so forth.

If she wants to record the fabric, then strips of fabric under the photos would be cool. Or even use strips of fabric as a frame for the photos. I know there are scissors with different edges that may work to do decorative edges in the fabric. Maybe braid strips to make a back drop for the photos.

Hi Kiwi, she has given away all of her quilts but one, so i don't believe she is saving things to be mended. But i really don't know.

The problem is, i have to create the book with everything BUT the scraps, as i want this to be a surprise and she would notice if her scraps were missing :-( As what you are suggesting is some awesome ideas.

My problem is i don't know much about quilting lol so everything is all jumbled. I am going to see if i can find some quilt scrapbooks to look at to get different ideas of how some of them are done and see what works with what i have in my minds eye.

This would be much easier if it was digital only lol.

Why not make it digital? You could scan some of her scraps when she is out of the house and yse any number of art web pages available like myartspace or fineartamerica where you can simply fill it all in the templates and create a gorgeous gallery or more.

Example of how she isn't digital: She JUST got a cell phone. She called me the other day while she was at a store and said, wow daughter, this cell phone thing is really cool when you have a quick question for someone.

She hasn't even been introduced to texting yet.
