Mr Obama has already laid the groundwork for his "out". He can, fairly gracefully, opt out for family reasons. If he were to do it now, it could set up a reasonable set of options. You may be right that his ego can't handle running off with his tail between his legs, or losing in an election, but this would be a viable, class option.
