Great Program! I volunteered for Habitat back when I worked for IBM and if they come to the cape ann area I'm back in. And my current favorite band has a christmas Jam every year for the last 22 years ... they've probably contributed a mil or two to the cause.

I've spent two separate weeks in Honduras with a surgical team , taking care of people with literally no access to medical care. Why did i do it ? - travel to another country - after all travel broadens the mind, helping care for someone who needs it desperately, and selfishly, because it made me feel good.

I also help with the yearly fundraiser to get people to Honduras. Its lots of fun, hot and hard work, and rewarding.

I've also been known to volunteer through the hospital i work at. I get browny points for work and do some good.

The question is, why would you not volunteer?

kiwisub12, I have asked Myself the same question, why would a person not volunteer?

The area I live seem to have a decent amount of people that volunteer but I have sewn many that either have too many other things they involve themselves in, or just don't care enough to do volunteer work (just My perception).

When I was living in RI I volunteered at Amos House in Providence. And My friend Richard Walton (who was an english professor in his middle 70s) founded the place I think... they were a shelter/food pantry/ soup kitchen  kind of place. But Richard had a bigger vision of the place and created a store called Sister City. Each year they would travel to a small group of villages in El Salvador. They'd bring Nursing staff with them (mostly volunteers from Rhode Island Hospital). I always got talked out of going as grunt labor by friends or family... Sure wish I hadn't.
  Cool that you haven't denied yourself the rounding of that travel.

Have volunteered my time for a variety of organizations and groups. Now more than ever with the economy. Help out with one veterans group, and an eldarly home. Another one is a food pantry.

I used to do a ton of volunteering when I was younger for everything from Amnesty International to Peta to local foodbanks to my daughter's school.

I haven't in many years though because I have basically become disillusioned as I get older. These days instead of volunteering for groups I find ways to help out individuals on my own, one on one. I know they're getting help because I'm giving it to them and I know my time and money is going directly to that person or family, etc...

Maybe one day if I find another group in which I feel I can give myself 100% then I'll start doing volunteer work again.

God bless you wonderful generous people…I must admit volunteering to me is almost a little selfish. The feeling I get helping people recover from disasters is so good and rewarding I’m not sure if I do it for the pat on the back or to truly help.

But at least I do it

Yeah iv e done some volunteering in the past. ive helped guys struggling with reading and writing and taught basic literacy. ive also helped in a sales and marketing department. i also offered to help the homeless but was rejected owing to lack of experience in that area. Would i volunteer again.? Yeah but only if it was in my local suburb, never in the city centre

Like littlewonder, when my kids were little, I was the parent who volunteered for everything at their schools. But my favorite was always the book fair. I started cutting back when I just couldn't face taking the kids on a hike to Hawk Watch.

I'm a volunteer for our local citizens emergency response team along with several organizations benefiting kids and the local women's shelter. I've always wanted to help with a Habitat house, but as clumsy as I am, I've always figured I would wind up causing an emergency situation. [:)]
