Multi-Millionaire Rep. Says He Can’t Afford A Tax Hike Because He Only Has $400K A Year After Feeding Family

quote:

Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) appeared on MSNBC with Chris Jansing this morning [9-19-2001] to attack President Obama’s new deficit reduction plan, which includes some tax increases on the wealthy. Taking up the typical GOP talking point, Fleming said raising taxes on wealthy “job creators” is a terrible idea that kills jobs because many of these people are small business owners who pay taxes through personal income rates.

Fleming is himself a businesses owner, so interviewer Jansing asked, “If you have to pay more in taxes, you would get rid of some of those employees?” Fleming responded by saying that while his businesses made $6.3 million last year, after you “pay 500 employees, you pay rent, you pay equipment, and food,” his profits “a mere fraction of that” — “by the time I feed my family, I'd only have maybe $400,000 left over.”

Jansing pointed out that whining about tax increases while making $400,000 annually is “not exactly a sympathetic position.” Fleming could only respond by saying that “class warfare has never created a job” and that his success is a “virtue.” But he noticeably never answered Jansing’s question about whether he would actually be forced to lay off workers if his taxes went up.

The average household income in the U.S. in 2010 was just under $50,000 — down 2.3 percent from 2009 and lower than it was in 1997.

How hard does the congressman work to make the equivalent of eight median household incomes? Fleming told the Wall Street Journal that “he spends very little time on day-to-day management, though he weighs in on broad strategy decisions.” “I monitor the reports. I’m certainly in communication with the managers,” he told the paper.

The median personal wealth for members of Congress grew to $911,510 in 2009, up from $785,515 in 2008, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Nearly half of the members of Congress are millionaires.

The current salary (2011) for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $174,000 per year.

•From 1789 to 1855, members of Congress received only a per diem (daily payment) of $6.00 while in session, except for a period from December 1815 to March 1817, when they received $1,500 a year. Members began receiving an annual salary in 1855, when they were paid $3,000 per year

With a mere $400.000 profit from his business ventures plus his $174,000 pay check as a congressman he seems to have trouble making ends meet with more than a half million a year.
That he can say this with a straight face and that his audience does not laugh him off the stage is confusing.

$600,000 a year. His family eating isnt part of business expences. Add to that his paycheck and he is making $770,000 a year.

Yeah, Im really going to feel sorry for him.

But, if anyone believes out of 6.3 million that is all he gets.... lol

Not to mention he runs his whole life through his S Corp status down to meals out with the "clients"..errrr family....that he happily takes off his expenses. Cars, office, vacations...etc....all the while not having to file as a C corp......fucking cry me a river.

He ain't going to lay no one off. What kind of sense would that make unless he is heavy in people anyway. Time to shove it up his Ass

"He ain't going to lay no one off."

Despite the double negative, you are correct. It's simple, eveyone who could possibly be layed off is already layed off.

But the place is probably heavy with people - at the top lol. I mean, how could a congressman possibly be running a successful business ? Oh yeah, government enablement via no bid contracts or something of that sort. I forgot about that.

T^T

I sure feel sorry for that poor bastard. Maybe someone ought to sign him up for some free cheese to go with that whine.
