Okay STUPID question,

why can't we reuse the lancets?  I mean can we wipe them off with alcohol or boil them to sterilize them -- even though the outside is plastic?

Also, i decided to start using a meter just to have some fun with the data and see if i can always get it in the normal range -- plus good background for my doc when i next see him.

My Bayer Contour 250 test stripes will cost me bloody 107 and that's WITH my insurance.

I did find on the Bayer Contour site that i can sign up and get a discount card to use at my pharmacy that they will pay up to $35 bucks per box/month -- you pay the first 15 and anything after the $35

So technically i can get $35 off.

Anyone else have some good sites to buy supplies or get discounts for same?  i knocked my perscription down to 100 stripes which should help in price.

As i mentioned before, there are some pharmacies you can get your metformin for free -- mine is publix and my perscription is 2 1000mg tablets a day.  Just call them and make sure you specific you want the free program.

There's nothing to stop you leaving the same lancet in your pokey thing for multiple prickings, ba: whatever's claimed, it doesn't need changing (or even cleaning) every time unless you have something really filthy on your hands when you prick your finger. It doesn't actually need replacing until the tip starts to get dulled, and you'll soon know when that's happened.

Are there any Canadian mail order sites you could order test strips from? You won't get your insurance on them, but there may be enough of a difference from the (frankly disgusting) prices that are charged in the 'States for the things to make it worth looking into anyway.

I can get 100 for 35- 50 bucks, less than i could get from USING my insurance if you believe that.  $77 for a box of 100 strips.

Give that they probably cost about five cents to manufacture twenty, that's a fucking travesty.

When my dog was dying from cancer I got all his meds from Canada or an independent pharmacy. The vet was charging $75 for something WalMart carries for $4 >_<

To bring this back on topic - it does pay to shop around.

THAT'S what i am saying Moonhead lol.  I was like its a 1/2 inch strip of paper that sucks up blood.

I am not sure how much shipping would be from Canada as they aren't drugs i am sure i can get them anywhere

tazzygirl -> RE: One stop Diabetic Chat (12/29/2011 7:43:23 PM)

Uh, Angel, where in Canada? Got a site to order strips?

As far as needles and lancets... believe it or not, both can be reused. They do get dull after some use. Hospitals toss them after one use for obvious reasons. But, at home, when you are managing your own care, there is nothing wrong with reusing.

Walmart has their own.

100 strips for this meter cost less than 40 a month.

barelynangel -> RE: One stop Diabetic Chat (12/29/2011 8:31:41 PM)

Hell i don't know where in Canada lol Moodhead is the one who said Canada, i am lucky i know it's NORTH of Chicago.

I will check Walmart, i have a lifestyle meter and a Bayer contour.

This is all way to much effort i am thinking -- my enjoyment of data isn't worth all this effort lol

My bad.
It might be worth googling the manufacturer: any site they have outside of the 'States might have the test strips for a lot less than the American site does. I was just assuming Canada as they have price fixing, but (as tazzy says) they may not cover test strips as they're not technically medication.
