I am starting to consider moving from my rural home and I am beginning to think about what I might want in a new living situation. Not so much the place itself, more the neighborhood and atmosphere. I really liked having very little contact with neighbors for years and years, and I liked being able to keep animals. I also loved the relatively quiet nights, the beautiful views, and the wildlife. I did not like the constant gunfire during the weekends, the trespassing by ATVs, the distance I had to travel to work or to shop, and the weird incidents, like the racist posters that are occasionally seen in the area. Disclaimer: I don't believe my neighbors are distributing posters like that, I think it is people who come up to ride ATVs. Anyway, I have lived here for a long time, so it is kind of hard to get my head around the thought of being anyplace else. What are others living situations, if you don't mind telling me. What do you like and dislike about them? EDITED TO ADD. My plan is to move in about a year, so this time, next year.

I live in a mid-sized city. Likes: Not many to be honest. The part of town I live is close to most major stores and its a short drive to the interstate. There are a few "mom and pop" type of places that I go to. I live close enough to the zoo that I can hear the lions roar on a quiet night. Dislikes: The annoying massive amount of people on the roads during the day. I dislike neighbors being so close. The amount of noise from people nearby. The air quality is crap. The list of dislikes could be a long list but I will end it there.

I live in a very nice suburb, 20 minutes from Milwaukee. The best of both worlds. 4 seasons is great with a lot to do here in the warmer months. What not to like. One of those 4 seasons is winter. It is usually 5 months which gets very long.

We live in a major city, but in an odd little corner of it tucked away between an industrial/commercial district and the river. Many of the houses are, or at least look like they are, converted cottages. There are parks or woods all around us, so the feel is of a country village. That and we are right on the river, our back yard ends at the water, which is wonderful. To top it of we are right off a major road, so travel into town is quick and easy and there is plenty of buses as well. There are stores and restaurants and things within an easy walking distance and a multi-plex theatre a few minutes away. We have all the benefits of living in a big city and all the charm of living in a little village, all rolled into one. [:)] We all love it here, but there is some talk of moving out of the city altogether.

Well, if I have to be in New Hampshire (which it seems I have to be), I love where I live. It's a small town, without a grocery store or a 7-Eleven, but close enough to other towns that I don't feel isolated at all. My house is right across from a school and in the historic district, and enough people pass by that someone will always wave or stop to talk, but it's still quiet enough that I can sit out on my porch, as I am now, and not see a single car go by. The people are nice and the more involved one becomes in a smaller town, the larger that town becomes, in my opinion. I love the weather - I would prefer it colder and cloudier, actually - and I like the reputation of New Englanders of being hearty. All in all, pretty happy here. :)

I just moved to Baltimore a couple of months ago. I like that I'm close to everything, there's always something going on and the public transportation runs all night and day. What I don't like is that my allergies are killing me. My body just needs to re-adjust to the change in climate. I also don't like the high crime rate but you'll have this in any big city. ETA: I'm across the street from a beautiful park and being that my apartment is a detached carriage house above a garage on a side street, it's almost dead quiet. I can also see the harbor from my large bay window, which is beautiful at night when it's all lit up or when the moon is shining on it.

I live in a small seaside town - the town where I was born and where much of my family still lives. I left here 24 years ago and lived in and around london for nearly 20 years. Although I owned property, made friends, had a career and all that good stuff, I always wanted to come 'home'. I love living 15 minutes from the sea. There's countryside nearby if I want it, and an excellent wooded green space 2 minutes' walk away for the dogs. It even has a small river. My house is small, it's in the middle of a housing estate (which can feel a little claustrophobic) but my immediate neighbours are fantastic and there's a community feel. The weather at this end of the UK is markedly cooler than the London end, but I don't really care. It's what I grew up with. I hope never to leave my home town again [:)]

the place myotherself lives sounds dreamy. :) i live in Omaha, which isn't huge but it isn't small. Likes: there are lots of trees here; this city is very dedicated to tree conservation. There are tons of parks of different sizes and types, and a leash-free dog park. I'd never gone to one before moving here. There's a big arena for national concerts, great theatre offerings, a world-class art museum, and a University, that's on the small side, but has excellent faculty and caring staff. there are 4 well defined seasons, though it seems what you mostly get here is winter and summer. spring and fall kinda sneak in and out. Public transportation is available, there's also a huge network of libraries, and quite a variety of movie theatres, including Film Streams, which showcases independent and art films. There's an active local music and art scene, too -- the art world here is large and very diverse. I've had more opportunities for showings and selling my work here than I have anywhere else I've lived. Dislikes: rent seems high for a very small house like mine, unless you want to move to the poverty-and-crime-stricken North. Omaha has an enormous rate of poverty among brown folks like me, and the culture of poverty tends to come with crime. Omaha also has an enormous population of wealthy people who live as far West as they possibly can and who are completely disconnected from the issues of regular people. the roads aren't well maintained which leads to a lot of busted tires, axles, and other car maladies associated with potholes. winter here is TERRIBLE and they arent the best at clearing the roads. also, traffic is obnoxious because of the way these people drive. it's literally some of the worst driving i've ever experienced.

It's an ex-mining community area that relies on heavy industry (ship-building primarily). But I love it. I can't live without the smell of salty sea air or the risk of being shit-bombed by some of the biggest seagulls known to the world!

I live in TN for the moment. I like the quiet and the fact that no one feels the need to involve themselves in things that don't concern them. I dislike the ruralness and relative dearth of culture. Since I'm in a reclusive period it's actually a very good place to be. In the long run I'm not staying, of course, but for now it suits my needs quite well.

I moved from a very rural area in June. I loved and hated it there. The property was 6 1/2 acres, with 3 ponds, off the road by about 500 yds and at night you could see the sky brightly lit up by the stars. No streetlights. I lived outside of town itself by about 12 miles, which could be a pain in the behind, but I loved that I lived across the lake and there was always a breeze to cool things down at night, regardless of the heat during the day. I hated being 4-5 hrs from my dad and didn't see him nearly enough. I moved to a mid-sized town where the rent is cheaper and I'm now closer to my dad, only about an hour away. I finally have a full size apartment, instead of a bachelor with no kitchen. Love that part. The street is fairly busy during the day, but quiet enough at night. I miss going to sleep with the sounds of the crickets and bullfrogs and waking up to the song birds in the mornings. It's been 2 1/2 yrs since I've heard sirens of any kind, don't much like that. But I'm now close to everything I need and that's a lot handier. Going to be very tough winters since I'm right on the St-Lawrence seaway. This is real snow belt country.

I think if I answer this that it will be a bit silly. OK. Positives. The scenery here is beyond compare. I can walk out My back door and step into a postcard. Completely gorgeous. There are so few people here that they literally must depend on each other so there is a real sense of community. Probably the nicest people on earth. Negatives. This really is the middle of nowhere. The potential for isolation during the winter months is very real and doesn't suit My personality. If we were located in the city there would be a different tilt but being in this little town changes the potentials. If I were to choose, I would probably pick a different location in the lower 48. I quite prefer the suburbs.

I like that Iowa is very much home to me. I know the place, it is very familiar in all ways. The people are a mixed bag, but over all nice. It is easy to get around IF you have a good vehicle. The lack of major public transportation would astonish people from places like the East Coast and much of the EU. The cost of living is fairly low and quality of available merchandise, especially food, seems to be a lot better than most other places. We didn't have a housing bubble to really pop, nor has the economic ills that have affected much of the rest of the country, world even, has nearly as big of an effect here. Jobs are not impossible to find. Lilly and my climate is the same. Very much four seasons with summer and winter being the worst and longest. We are currently in my favourite time of year. Spring being a very close second. I love the town I work in, very culturally hip for the midwest. But I also love that I live 50ish miles away on a very secluded hilltop with fabulous views (for Iowa) and lots of privacy, peace and quiet.

I lived in Indiana and Ohio when I was younger, I actually like the midwest. I understand the cost of living is really cheap. My ideal home would be to take the property I am living in now and relocate it in a less remote area. I am not looking forward to winter out here again, it can only be described as gloomy, for months on end. The only thing that brightens it up is the occasional snow storm. I love the summer out here, though.

I live in a little town just south of Fort Wayne; mostly farm land, mostly Amish. We moved here from an even smaller town in Texas called Moody, which was about 15 miles south of Waco and 15 miles north of Killeen ( the population was about 75 ). I like small towns. I like living in areas where everyone knows everyone, and everyone knows what everyone did last weekend [8D] I moved here from Moody, originally because of the school system. Adams County has an excellent school system ( my youngest was in first grade at the time ). Indiana, itself, was chosen because I actually grew up in Hammond, which is on the other side of the state by Chicago. What I like about this place? Outside of what I have said about the schools...it's a small community, it's a farming community, it's a 'help out your neighboor' community. It's small enough that most anyone I pass on the street, I know by name. What I dislike? How religious the community is. The fact that I don't go to church is known by everyone, and commented on by everyone. [:'(] Other than that though, I really like where we are living. However, when the last one graduates, I plan to move back to Texas. [&:]

I live in a small town. What I like about it - great transport links, fantastic parks nearby, walking distance to work, a reasonable smattering of shops about. What I don't like about it - neighbours regularly having a barny in the street, no family or friends in walking distance.

The only things I really dislike about where I live are climate/weather related. I hate the stifling, humid summers and tornados. I don't mind the relatively mild winters. I like a little snow but not weeks on end of it.

I'm in a mid sized suburb outside Sacramento. Other than the heat in the summer, it's great. I'm right down the street from my neighborhood gym, grocery store, and where I get my nails done :) I'm 20 minutes from work. I'm 2 hours from SF and 2 hours from the Sierras. My family is close, which is important to me. And the community I'm in is quiet and full of nice people. I like it here.
