It is actually due to your profound affliction, the Dunning–Kruger effect.

Yes, I am. It arises from always being right.

PUHLEEEEEEEEEEZE I spit coffee on the screen when I read that.

On another note in all fairness. I'm 51 and 4 years too young to have been in SE Asia. Wilbur is 55 so he could chronologically have been there at the end.

ED to move the damn post to where it made sense

Well, regardless, even with the out of date age, you're old enough. Folks ask if I was there and I tell em "Too young to go, old enough to get fuckin nervous"

Funny, I have rarely had any personal issues aside from once with any poster. I have always tried hard to post in a manner that wasn't personally offensive. I am certain I haven't always managed to be as couteous as I could be, mostly due to the nature of some posts, and my lack of patience for some posts that seem to arise OVER and OVER and OVER again, and the conspiracy B.S. which just brings out the worst in me!
It would be good to have a bit of discourse without a lot of animosity, for some it will be difficult, and a lot of fun to watch!

There once was this couple who found a beautiful house by an airport, they bought it and then complained to
the zoning officials that they couldn't enjoy their home because the air traffic was too loud.

It's funny, but I always interpreted this parable as meaning, "you knew the airport was noisy before you moved here", not, "Gosh, it used to be so nice here by the airport and now all those planes flying in have ruined it."

FR.  Good to see the new posting style guidelines are working already.  I am sure accusations of gay bashing are soon to follow.

FR:

I was thinking of whether or how we could "police ourselves".

What if we started a thread ... say call it "Personal Insult Scoreboard" ... and if you felt someone gratuitously insulted you, you'd post their nick, a link to the specific post, and a running score.

Of course, we'd not all agree what was a "gratuitious insult", but it really wouldn't matter.  The point being that if you did post it in the Scoreboard thread, you could not respond at all to the insult itself.  Posting it to the Scoreboard would be the only response to the insult (although not any other on-point content in the insulter's post).

This would not be a "reporting to the Mods" thing.  The Mods would not be required or expected to take any action.  Of course, they could more easily moderate and take action if they so desired by simply checking out the Scoreboard.

You could still use all the standard features of the forums, including the "Report" buttons, if you really wanted to do so.

There are some other issues, but ... just throwing out the idea ....?  Comments?

Firm

I like it, although it is so much more festive to start a flame war.  Also I am not sure there are many people on the P and R board who have the will power to not respond to the insult itself, as well as posting it to the scoreboard.

Will there by a prize at the P and R summit for the person with the highest score?  LOL.  Maybe we can start another post to lay odds who that will be.

I could be for it. I could demonstrate an analocuthon for Firm, for starters. (If you don't know what that is, ask Firm, I know he knows; now).

My cavil is that certain posters would report the offensive post (to them) all the while simultaneously the panjandroms of posting in that style themselves and feeling that they should perform their shennanigans unmolested.

Other than locked I havent noticed anyone missing (except JO, and I assume that is voluntary), so the timing seems a bit off.

Oh, I think it can be gamed, but if it is handled a certain way, most of those won't matter.

Perhaps, if one feels the need to respond in the thread where the insult occurred, the response should be "Scoreboard thread post 2335" such as:

Poster A:  You are a retarded, scum-sucking Republican!

Poster B:  Scoreboard: post 2335.  Score: 76.  Getting up there, Poster A!

What's that got to do with the topic?  The tax rates will increase whoever is elected.
As far as a prize ... I think the lowest posts to reported insult would be more appropriate.  Or ... the most original insult, maybe?

Firm

Quoted for Truth!!!

But of course; I would be the very first to explore the depths of that very perversion that you so elegantly point out, Firm. And I didn't just fall of the haywagon at it.
