defiantbadgirl -> Jehovah's Witness rant (9/28/2011 6:05:14 PM)

Our roommate (I'll call him Bob) grew up a Jehovah's Witness. Years ago, Bob refused to attend couples counseling with a wife who had cheated on him and attacked him with a knife. He obeyed the judge's restraining order instead of the church and they were divorced. The church, even knowing all the details, excommunicated him. For some strange reason I don't understand, Bob's father continued attending the church. Since Bob has been living with us, his father has called him, usually several times a week, asking for favors. Bob was always there to help him. A few months ago, Bob's father moved out of town and married a Jehovah's Witness woman he met on a Christian dating site. Bob liked his new stepmother and was happy for his father. Everything seemed to be fine until a couple of days ago when Bob's father started badgering him about getting accepted back into the Jehovah's Witness church. Bob has been attending another church. He's not interested in bowing down to a cult that excommunicated him for divorcing a woman who tried to kill him and refusing to violate a restraining order. Bob thought he and his father had finally agreed to disagree until he logged into Facebook yesterday. His father left a message saying from now on he could only have very limited contact with him and not to call unless it was emergency. What kind of father stays with a denomination that treated his son that way? What kind of father practically disowns his own son that's spent years doing favors for him over a religious denomination when he could simply change denominations instead? I am livid watching Bob go through this. He's like a brother to me. Who else has Jehovah's Witness horror stories they would like to share?

The day any religion disassociates Me from My own child is the day I separate My beliefs.

God can sort Me out when I get there.

Screw blaming the religion...someone needs to whap daddie upside the head with a 2by4[8|]

Sadly it is not limited to a specific religion, or denomination. Some families thrive on drama, thrive on control of others in the family, etc.

Mine is a simple one. Every Sat morning for five Saturdays straight they came by my door knocking at 9am. Well at the time I partied late on fridays and slept in (or tried to) on Sat. The first and second time I was polite, the third and fourth time I was stern. The fifth time I acted interested, and then asked if they believed God predetermined everything, and they told me yes. I then said "well he predetermined this then!" and slammed the door as hard as I could. That was the last I saw of them.

Besides that, I don't know much about them, and don't really care for organized religions western, eastern, or any other.

You are a rude man [:D]

I had a close childhood friend who became (along with her mother) a Jehovah's Witness in high school. I spent lots of hours talking with her about her beliefs and read up on the group on my own. The act of shunning family members and friends who are not part of their church is a very common one. They consider it worldly to associate with others unless they're trying to convert them. It's especially bad if a friend or family member used to be a practicing member and left the church. Parents are told to have no contact with their own children, siblings are encouraged to shun their non-believer brother or sister, etc. It's a very common, widespread practice.

I don't understand how any church could, in good conscience, encourage shunning one's own family and loved ones, esp. if they need help in some way but that's one of their tenets. Not up my alley in anyway, I'm afraid..........luci

Rude ? Well he didn't whap them upside the head LOL !

As far as getting rid of the JWs the olman took care of that. He had read the Bible as well as the book of Mormon. None of them people will ever set foot on this property again.

But now LP's problem, well I would say to just be supportive, let the roomie know they have real friends who won't let some dumbass preacher screw things up and if ya think maybe, start soaking a 2 by 4 in motor oil. After a while it will not break bend or splinter.

"I don't understand how any church could, in good conscience,"

I do. First of all they have no conscience. If they did they wouldn't need religion, or more aptly put cultism. But the fact is that it is a power thing, the assertion of power over others.

It's a disease like greed, and actually is almost the same thing. And like greed it will not be diagnosed nor treated.

60 Minutes did a story on child custody cases involving the Witness church.  When one of the divorcing parents is a Witness, the church comes to the aid of that parent with free legal advice courtesy of a handful of lawyers who live and work at the church's headquarters. The church essentially tries to scoop up all the kids in divorce cases, with the church ponying up the free legal advice to assure custody is achieved by the Witness parent.  Of course, the non-Witness parent must foot his own legal fees for any custody fight. They actually interviewed one of the child custody lawyers who lives at the Witness HQ, where his legal services are exchanged for fully paid living expenses.

And remember this is the cult that refuses blood transfusions, and in cases when both parents share custody, you run the risk of the Witness parent not telling a non-Witness ex that carries court-appointed medical veto power that the child is even hurt and in need of medical attention in the first place.  The Witness parent would rather the child die from a lack of blood transfusion than allow the ex to exercise the medical veto power.

Anaxagoras -> RE: Jehovah's Witness rant (9/28/2011 6:45:33 PM)

I had to be pretty blunt with a few persistent Jehovah's Witnesses too. lol They seem to bank on people being too polite to turn them away repeatedly but I feel there is something extremely presumptuous about calling to a person's home to preach to them.

Now that's a Jehovah's Witness rant!

Chances are it isn't the church, but the new wife. He didn't do it until she came into the picture (and married him).

Used to be the Catholic church excommunicated members if they got divorced. This isn't a new or uncommon thing. To this day in the Catholic church, while no longer excommunicated, a divorced Catholic can not get married at the center altar.

In the Jewish faith, one must get a "Get" (probably spelled that wrong) from the church in order to get married again.

Quakers also shun those who leave.

Point is, this is very common.

Obviously, there are steps Bob can take to be "un" excommunicated. He chooses not to do so and that's fine. You don't mention whether or not Bob called his father to discuss this message or not. Personally, I would consider it an "emergency."

If you are really Bob's friend, you aren't doing him any favors by referring to the religion he grew up in as a "cult." I get the feeling you feel the same about all relligions. A friend is supportive without being judgemental.

Personally, I think it is wrong for a parent or a child to end a relationship with the other, except for extreme situations. Doesn't matter if it is because of religion, lifestyle, choices regarding career or marriage. There are plenty of people who end contact with their children or parents over a choice of a spouse that has nothing to do with religion. Your child will always be your child, your parent will always be your parent. A spouse who expects you to give up one or the other is likely going to fly the coop at some point anyway. I do believe that if you find out your kid (or parent) is a murderer or some other type of criminal, a parent is abusive and things like that can change the whole "ending contact" issue.

But again, it definately sounds as though it is the new wife more than the new church that is making the push for this. Apparently, his father has found the golden pussy and wants to keep it happy.

2nd time around I answered the door nude with a gay porn mag in hand, asking if they wanted to "come in for a good time? You too, lady."

And domestic violence groups provide free legal services as well. So do many other groups. Of course, that wouldn't fit in well with your obvious bias, so please carry on.

I'm not a Jehovah's Witness, but had a friend who was married to one. She was raised Catholic and is the financial manager for a local Catholic Church (yea, I know, they have tons of money). No one suggested that he should leave his wife or convert their children.

As for the medical issues, that is a totally different thing and many religions have that belief. I don't agree with them, and if I had an ex who did, and failed to notify me of my child's injury or refuse medical care, there would be hell to pay. Then again, in that circumstance, I would have made sure that the court granted me sole authority on medical emergencies.

He's lucky I don't know where he lives.

Actually, this is a combination of a Bob's Daddy rant and a Jehovah's Witness rant.

I got pissed one time when the JWs came to my door at 8 am on Christmas morning.  It was the first time I really understood that they don't celebrate the holiday.  Anyway, as soon they started talking, I said something like "excuse me, but I'm not a Christian and I'm not interested".  I said this with my Christmas tree and decorations in full few.  But the holiday was usurped by the Catholic Church anyway, from Germanic pagans.
