Yesterday an interesting discussion came up with a couple of friends and I noticed a difference
of view and opinion as to what is understood being a "Slave" or being "Submissive".

So I kindly ask you all for your input: what do you understand the difference is being a "Slave" vs. "Submissive"?
I'm curious what the answers are.

The definition of "submissive" and "slave" depends upon each individual... you'll never get a consensus.

To me, a slave is more "hard core" than a submissive... but that just leaves open arguments over what constitutes "hard core."

On an entirely unrelated matter: you get my vote for creepiest avatar.

to me, a slave is an owned person and submissive is not. it's not about the degree/depth of submission or how "hard core" you are, at least not to me.
but in my own life, i was an owned person and the word "slave" wasn't applied to me because the Dude didn't like it. =p
so even my own life rejects my definition. haha

nobody knows!

it's a difference of how you act towards your Dominant i think. one small example i have is this; one girl and i were talking and agreed that we have done and would do things for our Dominants even if they weren't necessarily enjoyable, or they scared us. Other girls said "hell no!" there's a difference there, but who knows what/why/how it is.

and some Masters don't want their slaves doing things that they don't enjoy -- so it's not even about how much "Unfun" stuff you'll do, either. to me, it's just a matter of ownership. there is no consensus because people operate in different ways. one Master wants one kind of response, while another wants a different one -- who is more right? no one. =p

A slave is someone who will do what I won't. And a submissive is someone who won't do what I will.
This is how you'll usually see it used.

There is no tried and true definitions. I know slaves who have more autonomy than I do. And subs who have less.

The label doesn't matter, the people do.

Oh great. Another slave vs sub thread. At the far bottom right of the page there's a little button called "Search." If you fill in the blank and click it, it can do amazing things.....

So much for being kind to newbies asking innocent questions.

Your question: Submissive or Slave; what is what? is one that has been asked and discussed many times before. It doesn't mean it's not a great question, it is.

As others have mentioned, there is no general consensus. Ask 100 different people and you are likely to get 100 different answers. As with many things in BDSM, this is one you have to study and research and figure out for yourself.

And BTW: Welcome to the discussion side of CM.

you'll get a thousand different answers for this. The typical answer you'll get though is "it's whatever you want them to be".

For me:

slave: has no rights. You give your consent once. After that it's up to your Master. Usually more common among the M/s side.

sub: Consents each time. Has rights. More common in a D/s setting.

It depends on the relationship. Some Dominants call all their bottoms slaves, and yet can treat them differently. It's up to you. I've been referred to as both a slave and a submissive, but in different relationships those have all meant different things.

Truly, this has been discussed until the horse was beaten to death. A search will give you discussions until your eyes cross.

To (almost) all a thank you for your replies.
The reason for me posting the question was for the very same reason. In the aforementioned (real life) discussions with
friends the very same sort of "confusion" and/or interpretation arose as to what is what. So I thought I'll post it here hoping
to find some cultivated answers addressing the question.

Interesting is that on this board too one can select in the profile under orientation "Slave" or "Submissive" as well.

Again, thank you to those who made an effort to help clarify the question!

That horse is often beaten to death here, along with the rider who brought him/her.

To me a sub and slave are the same thing. They are just two names for the same thing. If a person is willing to submit to another, the length and depths they go in that submission shouldn't be limited by the label they place upon it, but rather their individual desires and will.

Hello,

Varies depending on how the person prefers to be referred to as. However, here is a general guideline.

Submissive: To submit. To like submitting. To obey, to serve. Not all submissives like to be called or be thought of as a slave. Sometimes fantasy play only; to submit only during fetish play time.

Slave: To belong to a Dominant. To be owned completely, sometimes by slave contract. To live the lifestyle of a slave. To cater to the whim of it's Owner. To give up complete control to another person fulltime.

Hope this helps.

It really depends on who you ask. Everyone has different definitions, and this is really a question that comes up incredibly often.

Personally, "submissive" is a more general term. Someone who submits. There are many different ways, areas, forms and paths this can describe. "Submissive" is a category that encompasses all of them; as a title on its own can mean anything.. I would say that "slave" is a particular type of submissive--someone who is owned by another person, submitting to them 24/7/365, not just for play or fantasy. That's my opinion on it, but of course they are just labels and mean different thins to different people.

Oh yay I haven't seen one of these since I got back!!!

Ok, I will say what I always say when people ask about labels. They mean nothing because they mean everything. Every label is open for individual interpretation and there for they have no real concrete meaning. What I consider sub you may consider slave or even bottom. It is all relative.

Hmm. What I noticed was, when I was searching for male submissives, sometimes male slaves came up as well, so I guess the difference all depends on who you ask. It seems that, in my search, the CM search function saw no difference at all. One thing I have noticed though, is that some people think there's an element of fantasy to submissive as opposed to slave. It seems that slave is just as apt to have that as a submissive, esp online. Not to say that some Ds don't fall prey as well.

JanahX, I assume you are talking about yourself!
May I suggest you get a "real" life, looser.
Obviously you lack the basics of human behaviour and courtesy.

What a whining little cry baby you are... let's recap, shall we?!!

1.  You asked...

So I kindly ask you all for your input: what do you understand the difference is being a "Slave" vs. "Submissive"?  I'm curious what the answers are.

2.  People "kindly" gave you a few answers, but given this EXACT SAME QUESTION is asked on a near weekly fucking basis, another person (OsideGirl) both wisely and "kindly" suggested you use the SEARCH FEATURE -- which will produce enough replies to THIS EXACT SAME QUESTION that you can read "until your eyes cross".

3.  To this good and "kindly" advice, you respond like a whining little cry baby... because boo-hoo, poor-wittle-you... you can't be bothered to just click the SEARCH FEATURE AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE where you'd find HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS of answers to this EXACT SAME QUESTION that's been asked ad nauseum.

How LAZY and CHILDISH of you... bravo!!!
