Just can't have it both ways. Too bad.

So now up goes the price of food again, whether because they are going to have to pay people real money to pick it, or a shortage caused by it rotting in the fields.

You don't think the suits up in the corporate offices are going to absorb this cost do you ? Hell no, not when the ever handy American "consumer" is around, and in this case, you can take that word literally.

I used to watch the original Star Trek and there were these episodes about highly advanced races that wound up going extinct. Kinda used to wonder how this could happen with all their adanced technology and all that shit. I don't wonder anymore, is it unfolding right in front of me.

Think of all the jobs down there though, we will see full employment hah?

Great news for a garishly red 10% unemployment state. Who needs wal-mart for great jobs hah?

If this wasn't going to have a deep financial impact on real people in the near, and long, term I'd laugh my ass off about these "unintended consequences".  Americans don't want jobs picking strawberries because it requires too much back-breaking work--it isn't worth it for the money paid.  And real wages can't be offered unless farmers are willing to charge exorbitant prices for their produce, which they aren't willing to do because the produce would rot on the grocery store shelves.

yeah, talk about something coming around and biting you in the ass..

How stupid are these politicians anyway??? "Unintended consequences", it doesnt take a genius to know this was gonna happen... Not only are food prices gonna increase but housing is too since there isnt anyone left to repair hurricane damage or build new houses..

ahhh, well,.. the plans of mice and men...

Or... MAYBE.. we'll end up with some true immigration reform. Ya think?

Some reform that just might address issues like... providing a work visa process that actually works, and creates a situation that actually.. what the fuck, encourages compliance with law, or sets up an immigrant health care benefit, or damn, just actually has some fucking intelligence involved with it?

Ya think?

" To help with the shortage of farm hands, McMillan said he'd like to see the state offer the jobs to people with matching qualifications who are now receiving unemployment benefits. If they don't accept the job, he said, the state may be able to end benefits."
That bit could be interesting.

It is seriously going to get worse before it gets better, at least until we as a nation, and the people we elect to govern us deals with immigrant labor in a way that makes sense. Face it. It's nothing more than a slave labor system now. You have people who want to work, need to work, who can and will provide work we want done, yet we make them sneak across the border to do it, and keep them silent and in line with the ever present fear of deportation.

It could be a win-win situation, but it will never be as long as either side can play politics with people they can so easily manipulate. I mean, it's not like they have to come out every few years, smile and pretend to like them just to get a vote.

No, we won't, we have had decades upon decades to write that bill as we did with a healthcare bill, or finance bills that were fiscally responsible.

Such mights are watery moonbeams.

Yeah, we've had plenty of time. Between some wanting to shut the borders completely, and those who'd rather just let them keep sneaking over so they can act like slave labor, all we've managed to achieve is a politically motivating reason to stay where we are.

I keep wondering whether or not we'll ever elect anyone who's vision extends beyond my party needs more control!

That's one of the things that amazes me about many lawmakers.  They see passing bills as allotting love (i.e., money) to certain causes to satisfy constituencies.  They never see that the laws have real consequences.

I remember once when an older woman who worked in the Capitol called everyone "darling" or some similar Southern term, and one guy sued her for sexual harassment.  One of the Congressmorons who passed the sexual harassment legislation was aghast that anyone would use the law he passed for things other than his intended use.  Dumbass.

I was just going to post exactly what mnottertail did... lol

Imo, things have gotten even more entrenched than at any time in the past... and those against immigration of any kind have become much more vocal and demanding,.. Imo people that are very militant about it are scary.. and they just dont get that no migrants = exporting jobs to other countries.. now that is another one of those long term "unexpected consequences".

If people dont want it at the price it costs to produce it, then dont produce it. Simple.

The H-2 Visa program would work if they would just administer/enforce it properly.

Oh God forbid, we may have to let the kids out of school to bring in the crops like they used to. I'm sure the kids would really hate that. Are you telling me that kids wouldn't pick 50 to 75 watermelons for a few hours and make 50 to $75?

$1 each just for cutting a watermelon off the vine and putting it in the back of a truck? Hello Mexican watermelons..
"From those statistics, one can calculate that the average cost per imported Mexican watermelon was $0.52.

First of all offering those jobs to those on unemployment is one thing, after their actual benefits run out. When you work you pay into it, via your employer which means you have a vested interest in it. During that time, in Ohio at least, depending on your job classification you must either report to the union office periodically, attempt to find a job in your field, or accept any work offrered. those are (or were) the three classifications. During that time you are not required to take a job paying significantly less than you were making before the layoff. However..........

After a while the government extensions kick in at which time your stake in it is gone. Should those people be forced to pick cotton (figuratively) ? Maybe maybe not.

So the article says most people don't make it past lunch. Is it the hard work or the low pay ? Well there are construction workers whose jobs are so physically demanding that just about anything would be easier, but they make real money.

Now think of this in terms of how the jobs are going in this country. You have people making half what they used to make. You have highly skilled unemployed people all over the place. And now this. What seems to be going on here ? It seems that everything conspires to lower the standard of living for the average US citizen. The health care thing is ridiculous, I don't see how it will cost the government a fucking dime since either we or our employers will have to pay for it. Taxes can't get much lower, face it if you make $29,000 a year and have three kids your income tax refund is more than you paid in. That's not going to balance the budget, and that means anyone who saves money is losing money, unless they can keep it offshore. People with low five figures in the bank don't usually do that. Want real retirement ? Rape your 401K and put all the money in offshore investments. Sad but true. Even if you make money here currency devaluation will eat it up.

The govewrnment made it cost effective to move all the manudacturing the fuck out. The government made it possible for Wall street to fuck people over all day long. The government has now removed the cheap labor needed top keep food almost affordable. Just what the fuck have they done for us lately ?

Those people all over the street on Wall street are picketing the right people, when they get down to DC it will be time to trade their signs for guns. Wll street is just a bunch of greedy motherfuckers, it is their nature to do what they do. The government is who sold us out and all of them should hang for treason because these greedy motherfuckers are literally preying on this country and as such are a dangerous enemy. the government has abdicated it's responsibility to keep this shit from happening. Another 9/11, just bit more subtle. Yes, the shock and awe will be delayed.

And if big business didn't eat up half the profits in food, farmers COULD afford to pay minimum wage.

And lemme clue you in on something, when you work hard physically, you usually don't need much health care.

Fuck, maybe I'll go down there and pick "cotton" or whatever. The economy in this state leaves much to be desired. Start a business ? Hell they would put me in a looney bin and then I could get a check. In fact if I start a business I will turn muself in.

T^T
