I dont recall anyone landblasting the NYT for saying the exact same thing

In Innovation, U.S. Said to Be Losing Competitive Edge

By STEVE LOHR
Published: February 25, 2009

The competitive edge of the United States economy has eroded sharply over the last decade, according to a new study by a nonpartisan research group.

The report by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation found that the United States ranked sixth among 40 countries and regions, based on 16 indicators of innovation and competitiveness. They included venture capital investment, scientific researchers, spending on research and educational achievement.

But the American economy placed last in terms of progress made over the last decade. “The trend is very troubling,” said Robert D. Atkinson, president of the foundation.

Measuring national competitiveness and the capacity for innovation is tricky. Definitions and methods differ, and so do the outcomes. For example, the World Economic Forum’s recent global competitiveness report ranked the United States first. Much of the forum’s report is based on opinion surveys.

A report last year by the Rand Corporation concluded that the United States was in “no imminent danger” of losing its competitive advantage in science and technology.

The new report, published on Wednesday, offers a more pessimistic portrait. Its assessment is in line with a landmark study in late 2005, “Rising Above the Gathering Storm,” by the National Academies, the nation’s leading science advisory group. It warned that America’s lead in science and technology was “eroding at a time when many other nations are gathering strength.”

Tazzy, an article from the NYT is hardly the same as the President saying it in a TV interview.

Is it any less true because the President said it?

Context, Tazzy, context.

This isn't a subject of interest because the AP fact-checked his statement. It's also completely true that Bush was President before him, and that there have been economic kicks in the teeth that were completely beyond his control.

What we see here, once again, is a man who is better and standing back and blaming, than he is at standing up and leading. Now he's blaming all of us.

Actualy you can blame it on Clinton for going soft on Microsoft - it should have been broken up, it was a major anti-trust issue, but he went soft on them because of all the whiny day traders with portfolios heavy in MicroShaft.

Bill Gates, with Windows, almost single handedly wiped out the Third Party software industry that DOS (open source) created, the current recession is to a large extent the result of the absence of that industry - his charitable contributions were paid for with jobs and productivity he destroyed, and we allowed that for the sake of some short term capital gains.

It is also out fault for supporting a proprietary OS that in large part, is the very infrastructure of modern business: it kills innovation, since only MS supported software works on MS systems, and that lack of innovation hurts every business that relies on software, which is pretty much everybody in a global economy.

Pretty much the same thing happened with the mortgage crisis, same cause, protecting stock prices - it's the slippery slope, and we're already on it, expect more of the same.

Enjoy the ride: you paid for it, now you'll pay more.

You could start with Linux and BML.

I also distinctly heard Obama say "decades". Thats at least 20 years from the math I recall in school. Granted that was a while ago, but I had yet to hear of any changes.

That would include Bush I, Clinton and Bush II.

I knew there was a democratic president in there somewhere.

Losing our competitive edge has been much publicized about in the last 5 years. I dont think its a secret anymore.

How about you send me your list first, Lucy. All the times you have taken a lefty to task for the awful way they talk about Republicans, or Bush, or Reagan. Surely you've chastised Ron for his toe-tapper theme by now, right?

Do you actually pay for Windows on a federal level?
I thought a lot of government contractors (particularly in military fields) refused point blank to touch any version of it, and were still using DOS or UNIX.

Tazzy, he threw his own grandmother under the bus. You think he's got a problem pissing on Bill Clinton's head?

I am asking you again, does it make it any less true because he said it? Or is it your contention that it isnt true at all?

And I'm answering you again, Tazzy. It doesn't matter. What matters is him using it to deflect criticism from his own record in office.

I dont see it that way. From that clip, he was stating a fact many have already stated. I heard no mention of a reference to anything ... which is what happens when someone pulls out a sma,ll section of a video.

If you have the full one, I would be more than willing to listen. Perhaps you are correct and he did use it to deflect. There is no way to draw that conclusion from the video you linked too.
