les stroud is the dude from Surivorman -- he goes somewhere random and films himself not dying for 7 days.

bear gryllis is the dude from Man vs. Wild -- he also goes somewhere random, but has a camera crew that follows him and does the filming (and sometimes helps him set shelters up and such).

personally, i prefer les. especially after watching bear drool like a goon over cameron diaz on some british talk show. haha =p

Unfortunately, because I live with a guuuuuuuuyyyyyyyyyyy, I have seen ALL TOO MUCH of both.

Les is a whiny ass but actually walks the walk and does a lot more safety applicable survival things for the rest of us, should we ever find ourselves in that situation. But I get totally sick to death of his pissing and moaning.

Bear is easier on the eyes and more fun to watch, but he takes unnecessary risks that the average person lost in the wilderness should not take. And, he is just, more or less, demonstrating his own craziness then getting whisked off to play elsewhere. He also has a very annoy obsession with getting naked as often as possible.

I vote neither.

that's why i like les - if i was really trapped somewhere, i'd be more likely to do the stuff that les does, rather than go jumping through trees like bear. he takes a lot of unnecessary but cool-looking risks, but an inexperienced person would get themselves killed that way. =p

I was just glad I wasn't the camera crew on the enema gig.

Me, I am figuring no one in their right mind would BE in those situations, so it's all a big game. There's one of a couple that mock each other through the forest with dare food. And I recall some show from the UK, where celebrities would rough it for a week. Joanna Lumley was spectacular! She did all this stuff she remembered from Scouts!

i could think of lots of reasons why an otherwise right-minded person might wind up stranded in the woods. like if you were hiking and took a wrong turn or had a broken compass, or forgot your compass. =p
if you went kayaking with a friend and somehow destroyed your kayaks. if you got separated from a tour group.
nutty stuff happens to people all the time -- those "i shouldn't be alive" and "i survived" shows are all about that stuff.

To me, it's hard to imagine any wilderness survival needed around here. Even in the most remote parts of Iowa, if you walk a mile or less there is a good chance you will find a road.

BUT, having been on a few interesting trips up into the mountains with my sister......I can imagine getting into trouble in a big hurry there.

It's not so much unprepared as it is, a place that you would have to have a pack mule to take everything you MIGHT need if you got stuck out there. We always take water and some food, like trail bars and are always dressed in layers. BUT, there have been days where down in town it was over 80, but at night, up in the mountains, it snowed in FEET, not inches.

Most interesting thing I ever had to do was walk several miles out of Big Cypress at night alone without a compass or light to get an airboat because a track full of people broke down. Either one of em would prob have pooped his undies everytime there was a splash nearby or a big gator rumbled out a mating call from a few yards away.

Thank goodness for no clouds and the stars.

Haven't seen either. I nominate Jeremy Wade of River Monsters. I just adore him. Although The Man sees no purpose to a River Monster marathon.

Pfft... The both of them combined have nothing on Jamie Hyneman. Seriously, check out that dude's resume, he could survive in the woods for 3 years with a hatchet and a plastic tarp, all the while engineering a helicopter to get home.

It's fishing. There needs to be no more reason than that.
