Now I've read a few, and I know what I enjoy seeing in a 'steamy' book, but for those of you who pick them up, do you look for books that contain BDSM related story or do the vanilla romances do it for you just as well?

I always figured BDSM related erotica books were a niche market and just didn't sell as well as your average romance book, given the assumption that the majority of people are not heavily involved in BDSM/ or familiar with it's varied practices.

Would love to hear peoples thoughts on what does (or doesn't) sell a novel about (or containing) erotica.

Well, I haven't read many BDSM books, but I have read vanilla romances in the past.  I like a good story line, not just driven by the sex and the relationship.  Also, believable conversation.  The characters should talk like people really talk, not in some stilted way.

And of course there is the sex.

To be honest, a decent plot.

My name at the end of it and hot, hot, hot ratings.

Okay, okay... most of the feedback I have gotten on my short stories was about the storyline and how I had one and not just a meat-fest. The second thing I remember getting feedback on was that I made the stories so real that people could picture themselves as the characters and could really see what happened, happening. For a while when I went to chat and people saw me there, they would change their nick to their favorite character. Some would come and read the same story over and over again, each night. I had to take my stories out of my journal here because they were getting far too much attention and I couldn't keep up with the emails. Unfortunately, my computer messed up and I had to hurry and post them somewhere and only had the unedited versions, so I didn't present so well and didn't understand where I posted them. I still got lots of feedback in email, not so much on the site.

I went with mild bdsm in many of the stories, depending on where the story would be. I think my first story, many years ago, was a masturbation story and that went over big. The next biggest hit was a professional dominant woman and had a rather long build up of building a relationship, protocol and then the sex scene. Cuck stories were very popular and I got many responses of men wishing their wife would do that to them, but I do believe it was because they wanted to watch their wife with another man, more than they wanted to be a cuck.

Most of the men responding to my stories were professional men that liked the intelligence found in the stories, rather than the raw bang'um up sex-fests. (Yes, I do make up words. lol)

I'm looking for an editor, as I'm good with storylines, but really suck at grammar and such. I did teach myself, but with my memory issues, I really don't get it!

PS... I better add... I wrote a bad slave story as a joke after reading a thread here. I mean, the dominant went off on this slave and it was extreme in psychological punishment and a beating. Some men went absolutely nuts over it wishing that could be them and I got some that were afraid! I had to put a disclaimer on it, that it was a joke! I mean come on... does a domina do all that for a slave reading her girly magazine?

start as close to the end as you can. don't worry about resolution and closure. something is going to happen between two people. or maybe more people than that, i'm not here to judge. get to it. give sensory details from the point of view of everyone involved. tease a little. get to the end. walk away.

sorry, was i unclear?

don't waste time on backstory. don't waste time on "character motivations." get to the hot parts. describe the hot parts from the point of view of everybody involved. tease a little bit. drag the hot parts out so people have time for a luxurious little wank. then end. don't worry about closure or any of that shit.

Blood, guts, ropes, pain, cages, a lot of nasty hardcore fucking, and a normally a gruesome death. Throw some demons or angels in there if you like. But I spent twenty years writing erotic horror so that just might be me.

ETA- when I stoped writing they took away my editor, and I cry about it everyday(because I still spell like a monkey on crack)

If it doesn't involve cheesecake, it doesn't matter.

So cheesecake, graphically involved in the gorey hard fucking that can be skipped to immediately if one wants to ignore the story elements?

Definitely some polar opposites in taste.

Do you think it is typical for male readers to orient more towards the immediate kink and sex, and for females to be much more interested if there's story and motive to build up to the event? (Sort of like that whole argument girls need foreplay and boys just want to get to it?"

I've been told males sexually are often more visual and immediate, while females tend towards mental/emotional lead-up contexts which interest them more than just the description of bodily fluids. Not basing that on any reading or studying it's just the general concept I've had parroted at me for years and I don't know if it holds real merit when it comes to kink-loving individuals.

ProlificNeeds, I would tend to agree with what you said with some conditions, but almost all the people that wrote to me about my stories... were professional males that liked that there was more than the fast sex and they had the money to buy rather than read freebies online. Many encouraged me to create a site for my writing so that I could make money at it. One offered to pay for it all.

Some want to beat off, for sure... but some want a bit more. lol Those would be the one's buying and not just wanking. So who do we cater our writing for?

You asked about erotica novels, but I'm going to answer as if you'd asked how I like to encounter BDSM in novels generally. I like it when the kink sneaks up on me. Sometimes it happens in an exasperating way, such as when I delve into a mystery novel for the express purpose of forgetting about lust for a while, and somewhere in chapter 15 the detective decides to relieve his own stress--by getting tied up by his girlfriend in a nightclub. (This, incidentally, is why I'd sometimes rather play video games than read. You can always trust Mario not to get up to any falderal.)

But generally, when I encounter kink, or even the barest hint of it, in a novel where I never expected to find it, that's when it pleases me the most.

Regarding erotic novels that cut to the chase vs. those with a buildup and characterization--I much prefer the latter, though you likely wouldn't guess it by the way I steer clear of video porn that aspires to be a real story. But I only do that because porn actors can't act.

the hot parts are great, but a "great" book they dont make
I think men prefer to read penthouse letters or short scenes
How many times can you say rammed his thick meaty stick into her honey lined wriggle pot in a 250 page book.or even how many ways?

BORING
I like letters and I like an intricate story, I like hot horney rampant sex, I like long drawn out scenes
but a boook of rampant sex bits in every paragraph..meh papercuts on the private parts hurt like a son of a bitch, so Im told!

My son and friend came over to help me move a sofa into the house. The friend responded to me talking about working with a question because he knew I didn't work an outside job. I was writing. So he wants to read. He reads a bit and says to my son, you need to read this, this is good. My knowing son, says, I don't think so and laughs.

So friend keeps reading. I tell him that I can lead him to the spicy parts and he says, no.. I want to read all of it. He was totally silent, would look at me from time to time and back to the longish story.

All of a sudden he jumps up from the chair and yells... some bitch ever did that to me, I would kill her!

It kind of snuck up on his vanilla ass! hehehe He finally understood why I would never be with him in part, because I was far more in charge. It kind of freaked him out, a woman expecting to get her's. He did ask to read more later.

Lockit: Did you ever consider self publishing on Kindle? It's easy to do, and you can take a 70% royalty with no upfront fees. Kindle handles all the sales hassel. I actually considered doing short pieces for rapid sale as eBooks because it would be easy income (as I see it anyway) if they sold. Of course I've never written to sell, only for self enjoyment, so it's hard to know if the material I enjoy writing, is something someone else would enjoy reading.

I'm working on the Kindle, ebooks, self publishing and a web site now. I need one for my naughty works and one for my more serious work. The web site is a good way to advertise as well as blogging. Now I kick myself for getting rid of all my work because it was personal and just for me and it was being stolen. I also lost a lot of books from a computer mishap and seven years of research, files, cd's etc. being stolen. So I have a lot of work to do.

This is the route I am taking. I've had a publisher interested in my work, but still deciding how I want to go in that direction.

Stick your foot out there... I am. It may be worth it.
